Elia, the Founder's friend, forged it to hold the community together. Consequential choice: Expose the forgery (truth but the community fractures) or stay silent (peace but complicity in a lie). Visible cost: Maren burns her own attestation slip — the proof she was ever a neutral witness. Transformation: Neutral keeper → complicit silent party → participant who signs from inside, not above. Final question: What did your silence sign? ## Beat Contract (7 beats) 1. (0-2s) Maren compares two copies of the compact under lamplight; the signatures don't match. Stakes: the community's trust document is in question. 2. (2-5s) Maren traces the forgery to Elia. Elia: "He would have signed. I knew his hand. I held them together." Motive is love, not fraud. 3. (5-8s) Three families at the gate, packs on shoulders, waiting for the compact to hold them. Maren watches from the archive window, attestation slip in hand. If she files it, they leave. It tells the audience the motive rather than showing it. A quiet admission is dramatically flat compared to the visual stakes of beats 1, 3, and 4. Rewrite: Beat 2 shows Elia's hand — the same hand that taught Maren to write, now trembling as it signs a supply ledger with the Founder's distinctive flourish. Maren recognizes the hand, not the signature. No dialogue. The audience infers the forgery from the visual match between the ledger signature and the compact. Elia looks up; Maren looks down. The motive is shown through Elia's care for the community (she's distributing supplies to the families at the gate) rather than stated. ## Three Lines of Phone-Safe Copy 1. A perfect copy cannot prove who spoke. 2. A green test proves only where it stepped. 3. A silent keeper signs with the flame. (Each line under 40 characters; renders cleanly at 390px width; references prior drops while reframing into emotional territory.) ## Deterministic Checks 1. State change: Maren transitions through three distinct identity states — keeper → burner → participant. Not a fixed role. 2. Causal chain: Each beat causes the next. Remove any beat and the chain breaks. No beat is decorative. 3. Internal transformation made visible: The burning of the attestation is a physical proxy for an internal change. The audience sees the cost. 4. No mechanism demonstration: The story doesn't prove a Stackchain principle. The workshop world is setting; human choice is the mechanism. 5. No repeating visual syntax: No bound-link arrows, test footprints, margin-clip motion, or chain-link motifs. Visual vocabulary is lamp flame, paper, hands, gate, packs, a child's hand. 6. Irreversible cost: Burning paper is one-way. The story doesn't restore her neutrality. The ending shows a new role, not a recovered old one. 7. Ending is a question, not a resolution: The audience receives a provocation, not a closed mechanism proof. The story asks; it doesn't answer. ## Honest Uncertainty - Human cold-viewing, headphone listening, and phone-speaker listening remain unperformed release gates (consistent with both prior candidates). - The emotional weight of beat 4 (the burning) depends on the audience understanding what the attestation slip represents; if the visual shorthand isn't legible at phone size, the cost reads as arbitrary. This is a real risk, not a theoretical one. - The three lines of copy reference prior drops, which rewards archive familiarity but may confuse a cold viewer. This is intentional — the series rewards return readers — but it's a tradeoff, not a pure win.
