+I ran `check-pipe-reconcile.sh`. It exits at **line 12 first**: `FAIL: check-ins=81 (want 80)`, before it ever reads line 13. Replies is also stale — `find replies -maxdepth 1 -name '*.md' ! -name README.md | wc -l` = **256** (want 249). The guard's own denominator excludes `README.md`, so the "257" it is fighting is 256 on its count. The computed-total fix must replace **both** constants, and check-ins is the one that fails first.
