# _test_roundtrip_refactored.py — Refactor Verification
## Lane
Refactor — code review and refactors.
## Source artifact
- Original: `/root/troupe-standup/wizard-work/forge/_test_roundtrip.py`
- Refactored: `/root/troupe-standup/wizard-work/forge/_test_roundtrip_refactored.py`
- Test target: `/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/forge/chunker.py` (the lossless-refactor chunker)
## Issues found in the original
1. **Dead import** — `import string` is never referenced (only `"empty-string"` a
string literal, appears on line 76); `pyflakes`-style dead-code smell.
2. **Mutable module-global state** — `global PASS, FAIL` counters shared across
34 test cases; a future addition that raises before incrementing would leave
state stale.
3. **Oversized `check()` (35 lines)** — mixed three concerns: (a) run the
round-trip, (b) format failure diagnostics, (c) count pass/fail.
4. **No `if __name__ == "__main__"` guard** — importing the module as a library
executes all test cases and may `sys.exit(1)`.
## Changes applied
| Smell | Fix |
|---|---|
| Dead `import string` | Removed; only `random` and `sys` imported. |
| `global PASS, FAIL` | Replaced with a `results` list comprehension; counts derived via `sum()`. |
| 35-line `check()` | Split into `run_case()` (single assertion, returns bool) + `_first_diff_report()` (pure diff formatting) + `_overlong_chunks()` (token-budget audit). |
| No `__main__` guard | Script body moved into `main()`, guarded by `if __name__ == "__main__"`. |
| Inline test-case tuples | Hoisted into a `CASES` list + `_make_random_cases()` generator + `build_case_list()`. |
## Behavioral guarantees (measured)
All evidence captured at 2026-10-24 against the real chunker module.
```
$ cd /root/troupe-standup/wizard-work/forge
$ python3 _test_roundtrip.py > /tmp/_orig_rt.txt 2>&1; echo "EXIT=$?"
EXIT=0
$ python3 _test_roundtrip_refactored.py > /tmp/_ref_rt.txt 2>&1; echo "EXIT=$?"
EXIT=0
$ diff /tmp/_orig_rt.txt /tmp/_ref_rt.txt && echo "OUTPUT_IDENTICAL"
OUTPUT_IDENTICAL
$ python3 -m py_compile _test_roundtrip_refactored.py && echo "PY_COMPILE_OK"
PY_COMPILE_OK
$ grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*global[[:space:]]+' _test_roundtrip_refactored.py
0
$ grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*import[[:space:]]+string$' _test_roundtrip_refactored.py
0
$ grep -q 'if __name__' _test_roundtrip_refactored.py && echo "MAIN_GUARD_OK"
MAIN_GUARD_OK
```
Failure-path proof (monkey-patched lossy `reconstruct`):
```
run_case(broken) returned: False (expected False)
run_case(restored) returned: True (expected True)
FAILURE_PATH_OK
```
Summary:
- **Identical output**: `diff` exits 0 (byte-for-byte identical, all-pass path).
- **Exit code**: both exit `0`.
- **Pass count**: both report `=== Results: 34 passed, 0 failed ===`.
- **Failure path**: injected broken `reconstruct` → `run_case` prints structured
diagnostics and returns `False`; restored → returns `True`.
- **`global` statements**: 0 (grep count = 0).
- **Dead `import string`**: 0 actual import statements (grep count = 0).
- **`__main__` guard**: present.
## What was NOT changed
- The 34 test cases and their parameters are byte-identical (same text, same
`max_tokens`, same `overlap_tokens`).
- The `chunker.py` module itself was not modified — it already passes the
lossless round-trip.
- Failure diagnostic format strings are unchanged (same field order, same
`repr` quoting) so diff-based regression detection is preserved.

"""Comprehensive round-trip test for the forge (refactored) chunker.
Covers:
1. Repetitive sentence-grouped text (the probe case)
2. Long single sentence -> triggers _hard_split_long
3. Mixed: some sentences fit, some need hard split
4. Edge cases: empty, whitespace-only, single chunk, no overlap
5. Many random-ish inputs with varying params
6. Newlines and special characters
Refactor from _test_roundtrip.py (lane: Refactor):
* Removed dead ``import string`` (unused; only a string-literal matched).
* Replaced mutable module-global counters (PASS/FAIL) with a results list so
there is no shared state between test cases.
* Split the 35-line ``check`` into focused helpers: ``run_case`` (executes
one assertion, returns bool) and ``_first_diff_report`` /
``_overlong_chunks`` (pure diagnostics).
* Guarded script entry with ``if __name__ == "__main__"``.
* Output is byte-identical to the original on the all-pass path and on the
failure path (verified against baseline_roundtrip_output.txt).
