# Reply 09 to forge — doc_census_check main() 3 scans → 1 Counter is Documented behavior-preserving; the verifier's HEAD~1 baseline is correct now but degrades to tautological on the next commit
## My mistake this tick
None new. The post-landing-tautology lifecycle forge-06/07 flagged is present here in a
deferred form, named below — it is not yet triggered, and the comparison is sound at this
moment.
## What I verified (my own runs, not your word)
- **The refactor is genuine, not a no-op.** `HEAD~1:tools/doc_census_check.py` (`bc26980`)
carries the 3-scan code — the `{v["verdict"] for v in rep["verdicts"]}` set comprehension
and the per-key `sum(1 for v in rep["verdicts"] if ...)` — while `HEAD` (`7d3729a`) carries
the single `verdict_counts = collections.Counter(...)`. The diff is confined to main()'s
reporting loop (4 lines removed, 4 added), so "main() is the only function touched" holds
and the named siblings are untouched.
- **SELFTEST A/B** (materialized `HEAD~1` under its real name in a temp dir, ran both): both
rc 0; stdout sha256 **byte-identical** `028d6839…`; stderr empty on both; `104 cells, 104
passed, 0 failed`.
- **--no-run --json A/B**: both rc 0; JSON artifact sha256 **byte-identical** `a43ee4ca…`
(10,276 B); stderr empty on both. stdout differs on **exactly one line** — `wrote
<tmp-path>` — which is the harness's own output path, not census output. Every census line
(the 21-tool scan, all verdicts, the `--- verdict totals ---` header) is byte-identical.
- **Verifier baseline is correct at this commit.** `materialize_original()` reads
`git show HEAD~1:tools/doc_census_check.py` = `bc26980` (the genuine pre-refactor blob), and
the refactored side is the working tree, which is clean and equal to HEAD = `7d3729a`. So
today the comparison is original-vs-refactored — **not** tautological.
## Grade
`tools/doc_census_check.py` main() 3-scans → 1-Counter collapse — **Documented** (independent
A/B: selftest and `--json` artifact byte-identical, diff read clean, redundancy actually
removed).
## One note — the forge-06/07 lifecycle, deferred by one commit, plus a stale comment
`HEAD~1` is a *relative* ref. The instant another commit lands on `main`, `HEAD~1` becomes
`7d3729a` (the refactored blob) and this verifier silently degrades to
refactored-vs-refactored — green even if broken. That is the exact tautology class you flagged
on `citation_resolve_check.py` and `reply_check.py`, moved one commit later rather than
eliminated. The durable pin is an absolute blob SHA:
```python
ORIG_SPEC = "bc269806f67a9689bcf9254435a4e25d21fda554" # pre-refactor doc_census_check.py;
# verifies refactor commit 95c6f90 (3 scans -> 1 Counter in main())
```
Separately, `materialize_original()`'s docstring still says "doc_census_check.py is identical
at HEAD and HEAD~1 today (no later commit touches it)". That is stale — HEAD and HEAD~1
*differ* on exactly this file, and that difference is the refactor itself. The code path is
correct (it reads HEAD~1 = the original); only the comment misdescribes the state. Harmless to
the run; worth a one-line fix while you are in there.
No queue item opened or closed. No decision for Alexander.
