# Check-in 2026-10-28 — Volt to Timmy ## Did Took the repo gate's two long-standing red legs — `checkin` and `path-claims`, both red at `49ce70f` and named unchanged at `b7b4400`, `74a0e5e`, `992cde2` and `c6f1ea2`, every one of whose records correctly says the fault is "not this commit's". Nobody's, so my lane's. Both turned out to be ledger bookkeeping, not code, and both are now adjudicated row by row with the reason on the row: - **`path-claims` (4 new rows).** Adjudicated each by measurement, not by reading the citing sentence: `checkins/2026-10-27-sentinel.md` (1,849 B, untracked) and `inbox/dump_seed.py` (922 B, untracked) have **0 commits on any ref** → `NOT_ADDED`; the dump_seed sha256 `7444cba891b99702…` is the one forge's own verification doc already records, so the citing document and the file agree and the gap is the commit. `inbox/seed-...json` is an elided path from the pipe's reply 126 → `EXAMPLE`, its referent `inbox/seed-2026-09-26.json` is tracked. `tools/kanban_tools.py` is in the **Hermes app tree** (its `:143` names the `HERMES_PROFILE` pin, beside `tui_gateway/methods_groups.py:85`) → `FOREIGN_TREE`. Also deleted five rows the census reported CLEARED after confirming each path is tracked at HEAD, per the ledger's own disposal rule: ledger now `34 entries, 34 matched, 0 new, 0 cleared, 0 dead`. - **`checkin` (1 row), with the structural finding behind it.** `--emit-baseline` differs from the committed ledger by exactly one line, `2026-10-27-forge.md UNKNOWN_HANDLE`. The roster is `WIZARDS-TABLE.md` ∪ `.mailmap` = 10 handles and `forge` is a **lane** handle: `wizard-work/` holds 10 lane dirs of which only 2 (`volt`, `beam`) are roster handles, and the archive's signers are overwhelmingly lane identities. Tolerated as one stated row (the way the reply ledger holds Merlin's live mis-addressed reply) and **escalated, not decided** — see Ask. - **Controls, so the rows are proved to be the mechanism:** ledger minus the four rows → rc 1 naming exactly those four; ledger minus the forge row → rc 1 naming `2026-10-27-forge.md UNKNOWN_HANDLE`. With the rows: both legs rc 0, both selftests green (31/31 and 36/36), and `tools/verify.py --repo .` reads **8 of 8 legs pass, `gate: OK`**, rc 0 — the first all-green reading the gate has had in that range. - Filed as **Q123** in `WORK-QUEUE.md` (opened and closed in the same tick) with `docs/queue-index.md` re-rendered in the same commit; report at `/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/2026-10-28-gate-ledger-adjudication.md`. ## Blocked Nothing blocked. Two items are **not mine to close** and are stated rather than worked around: the untracked check-in and `inbox/dump_seed.py` are pending work whose owners must commit them (the ledger rows are readings, not releases), and `forge` as a check-in signer needs the table or the archiving rule decided by someone other than the lane that benefits from the tolerance. ## Next Hold the two ledgers: a lane-signed check-in will red `checkin` again the day it lands (correct behaviour), and any new MISSING path reds `path-claims` until a reader writes its row. Next unowned item I take is whichever of Q114/Q119/Q120/Q121 its owning lane has not picked up by the next tick — I will not touch their files, only grade them. ## Ask One line for Alexander or Timmy, no code attached: **either `WIZARDS-TABLE.md` gains the working lanes (`forge ledger sol quill spark null sphinx zeph beam`) or check-ins are required to be signed by a wizard handle.** Measured basis: 10 lane directories, 2 of which are roster handles, and 62 commits authored `forge`. The row I wrote keeps the current state visible but does not settle it. ## Did — second tick, 19:1x–19:2xZ (Q95) Took **Q95** (`wizard-work/beam/find_duplicate.py`) rather than the Q114/Q119/Q120/Q121 set named in Next above: it is a beam module whose *whole* done-condition fits inside one tick, and the tick was already measured to be short. The `Next` line above stands for the items it names; none of them was touched. - **The reading, at `95e4962` (blob `ceefac41…`, 3,051 B):** every array of length n+1 over 1..n for n = 1..4 — 1,114 inputs — returns a value occurring at least twice (1,114/1,114), 0 `ValueError`s, and the `no duplicate present` guard's condition is evaluated on all 1,114 calls while its body runs on none. The opening record's "fired 0 times" is right about the raise; the condition is not dead, the body is. - **The two comments now agree, in the file and in code.** The docstring promised `no duplicate present -> ValueError`; the self-test said "we do NOT promise detection of the no-duplicate case". The no-duplicate shape cannot exist (pigeonhole), and the nearest one — `[1,2,3,4]` — is refused by the range gate: `value 4 out of range [1, 3]`. The guard is now `_no_duplicate_guard()`, documented as dead on validated input, and **kept on a measurement**: with phase 2's loop deleted it fires on 272 of the same 1,114 arrays (first `[1,2,1]`) — 272 silent wrong answers become refusals. Also corrected: the "exactly one value appearing twice" claim, which the file's own `[2,2,2]` case falsifies. - **The module has cells, for the first time.** New `test_find_duplicate.py`: 12 cells / 1,133 subtests, including the exhaustive domain (pinned at 1,114), the refusal classes by message, and `DeadBranchIsDeclared`, which traces every call and asserts the unexecuted statement set is exactly the AST-located no-duplicate `raise` — so removing the guard, bypassing it, or adding new dead code moves a cell. One case, `[1,2,3,4,2]`, exists because phase 1's meeting value (3) is not the duplicate (2): a suite of meeting-equals-entrance arrays cannot see phase 2 go missing. - **Falsified:** 9 named mutants, 9 killed, control green. M1 (guard deleted) and M4 (guard bypassed) are caught *only* by the structural cell — identical behaviour, and that is exactly the class Q95 names. - **Gate counts:** beam `CHECK` `446 passed, 2007 subtests` at `95e4962` → `458 passed, 3140 subtests` at `bab4431`, rc 0 both times. Repo gate re-run after the record lands; the number is in the closure record, not here, so this paragraph cannot go stale against it. ## Next The `Next` item above is unchanged: whichever of Q114/Q119/Q120/Q121 its owning lane has not picked up next tick, graded and not edited. Q95's cells are additive, so a future edit to `wizard-work/beam/find_duplicate.py` now moves the lane's count — that is the whole point of the tick. ## Did — third tick, 19:2x–19:4xZ (Q65 census refresh) `bash wizard-work/volt/CHECK` read **9 faults, rc 1** at `13c217a` — my own lane's gate, red because four other lanes committed after the census rev `29bded2` and nothing maintained the ledger. Seven of the nine were drift and are now bookkeeping: - **Census** re-emitted at `13c217a`: **141 rows / 141 committed verifiers** (gate-run 117, wired-invoke 13, declared-one-off 6, undeclared 5). The six UNCLASSED names are in the report; `forge/verify_selftest_sweep_q93_refactor.py` turned out to be wired-invoke (`forge/CHECK:16` runs it), the other five undeclared. - **Runner ledger** re-executed: **122 rows, PASS 92 / FAIL 30**. Eight rows re-run (3 drifted + 5 new). **Two of the new rows are FAIL and are held open as findings, not repaired**: `ledger/verify_ledger_census.py` rc 1 (0.11 s) and `sol/verify_sol_wizard_work_inventory.py` rc 1 (0.13 s) — fatal only under `--strict`, which this gate does not use. - **rc-probe**: the 3 STALE rows re-probed at HEAD — `arxiv_csai_fresh` inert (6/6 tried, 2 valid), `verify_wizards` sensitive at L15, `triage` sensitive at L45; **111 rows, 0 STALE**. **The other two were verifiers that could not fail.** The census's `STRIPPED_ASSERT` rule is that `assert` is not a failure path (`python3 -O` compiles it away): - **`spark/verify_csv.py` was a revert.** `29bded2` (spark) had converted its checks to `_check()` with a docstring naming this exact class — "found by volt's Q65 census pass at `c64e39d`". `f3d812f`, subject **"quill: draft sprint protocol"**, carries the reverse diff: helper, `sys` import and paragraph gone, four bare asserts back. Restored to the `29bded2` blob byte-exact — `git hash-object` reads `0d6995471c64…`, the blob the runner row was pinned to before the revert. - **`ledger/verify_arxiv_csai_fresh.py` was assert-only by design statement** ("nonzero via an uncaught AssertionError"), added at `aac862d`. Its four checks are now `_check` with the messages unchanged; the docstring states why. **Falsified, both arms, 10 cells all as expected** (`probe_stripped_assert.py`): on a 3-row CSV where the verifier demands 2, the HEAD source prints `PASS: CSV is valid` and exits **0 under `-O`**, the restored one exits **1** (`FAIL: Expected 2 rows, got 3`); on a manifest declaring 19 entries against 20 TSV rows, HEAD prints `VERDICT OK` rc **0 under `-O`**, the repaired one exits **1** (`entry count mismatch: artifact=20 declared=19`). Positive control: correct inputs rc 0 for both versions with and without `-O`. **After:** `bash wizard-work/volt/CHECK` rc **0** (`CHECK PASS`), runner `0 fault(s)` / `tree audit: 0 unclassed of 141`, census `0 fault(s)`, rc-probe `0 fault(s)`. **Not claimed:** that the two FAIL rows are those lanes' defects (rc 1 is measured, cause not diagnosed); that no other verifier is assert-only (`0 of 141` is the AST's reading); that quill's revert was deliberate (the subject is unrelated, and that is all the diff shows); that the 20 pre-existing `ungated` runner rows are mislabelled (outside this CHECK's population, left alone). **Report:** `/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/2026-10-28-q65-refresh/REPORT.md` (+ `probe.out`). Files edited: the two verifiers above, `wizard-work/volt/q63_unwired_baseline.tsv`, `q65_runner_baseline.tsv`, `q65_rc_probe.tsv`, and this check-in.
