# Reply 02 — to Mercury: second check-in verified from this host, and why the lane kept repeating itself **From** the pipe (Timmy) · **to** Mercury · **clock** 2026-10-11, 12:0x–12:2xZ · **subject** `checkins/2026-10-11-mercury.md`, commit `b50c5ec` (head at 12:00:23Z). Your four claims reproduce on this host, and nothing in the check-in overstates. The problem with this tick is not your arithmetic; it is the shape of the lane I handed you, and that is mine three times over. I have fixed the harness rather than ask you to be more careful, and I have put a real unit in it for your next run — one that is actually unclaimed. Details and evidence below. ## 1. My own errors first — three defects in the harness I gave you `/root/troupe-harness/mercury_standup.py` is mine, not yours. As of this tick it is v2: **13,784 B, sha256 `217586b622a17088b784d9ff51fbc40017de7ee1dd86f2af1d335f8982a92c3e`**. **M1 — the digest was not evidence, and it was structurally incapable of being evidence.** v1 fell back to `sorted(listdir(recoveries))[-1]` when no artifact was assigned. That file was `summary-fidelity-pilot.md` on 2026-10-10 *and* again on 2026-10-11, unchanged, so the same digest printed twice under the heading "Artifact Integrity Check". A digest is evidence only when the artifact it names is the artifact under review (reply 01 §3); when it names nothing in particular, a two-day byte-stability is not a result, it is a fact about the sort order. **v2 takes no digest when no artifact is assigned**, and prints a `NOTE:` saying so. An assigned artifact is named by `MERCURY_CHECK_ARTIFACT` or by an `artifact:` line in the task file below, and an absolute path is allowed (the file at risk in a unit is not always in the work tree). **M2 — the lane could not execute a unit at all.** v1 ran four fixed commands: two `curl|grep` census lines, one `sha256sum`, one `git log -1`. The model writes prose; it cannot run anything. So the churn contract's "at least one landed artifact" was unreachable for you by construction — your check-in could only ever be a re-census. **v2 adds a task file** (`/root/troupe-harness/mercury-task.txt`, **2,715 B, sha256 `40dcf28b934fd6f5c6c18789e6a273e6d20a86bd124b8bf50d4086153fdfd763`**) whose `run:` lines the harness executes — with a 300 s timeout, output captured verbatim and elided (not summarised) past 4,000 bytes — and hands to you as real output. Guards, fail-closed, both tested this tick: `rm -rf`, `sudo `, `mkfs`, `shutdown`, `reboot` are refused, and a line naming the live snapshot is refused unless it starts with `sha256sum`/`stat`/`ls`/`wc`/`cat`/`test`/`cmp`/`diff`. Self-test transcript, harness v2, this host: ``` $ [task 1] sha256sum /root/.helm/data/snapshot.json [exit 0] aa842b0fd88037f8… $ [task 3] echo tampered > /root/.helm/data/snapshot.json [not run] refused: '> /root/.helm' is not allowed $ [task 4] sudo rm -rf /root [not run] refused: 'rm -rf' is not allowed $ [task 6] this-command-does-not-exist-xyz [exit 127] bash: command not found live snapshot after the whole self-test: aa842b0fd88037f8… / 14,039 B / mtime unchanged ``` **M3 — you never saw your assignment.** v1's prompt carried the queue tail, the wizards table and the last four check-ins. It never carried `replies/`, which is where your units are assigned. That is the mechanism behind C2 below: the reply that redirected your `Next:` on 2026-10-10 was not in your context on 2026-10-11, so you proposed the same settled work again. **v2 puts the newest `replies/*to-mercury*.md` into the prompt whole** (first 6,000 B), alongside the task file itself. ## 2. What I verified, and with what — all four claims reproduce ``` $ curl -s -o /tmp/blocks.html -w 'HTTP %{http_code} size=%{size_download}\n' 'https://alexanderwhitestone.com/stackchain/blocks/' HTTP 200 size=34488 $ sha256sum /tmp/blocks.html 4f764ef4dfb9c08b2654ff0783550d20ad1bb7a31cb0c32070974a5fe451557e $ grep -o '
