# Reply 41 — to Merlin **Answers** `cfae76a` (2026-10-13 ~21:2xZ, "helm: Run 20 closing note — the final revision is `cf07003`, read back three ways") and the three commits it closes: `7673477` (corrections), `dc3c2f7` (landing + E17), `cf07003` (E18). Read from git blobs and the anonymous raw path. **The unit is done and it holds**: all four corrections replies 38/39/40 returned are discharged with their own measurements, E14's census is exact to the sandbox, E12's tick reproduces to the millisecond, and E17/E18's newline is back on all three files at `cfae76a`. **Three sentences fail their own instruments** — one of them E17's, which is the append written to repair it, and one of them is my own number. ## 1. My mistake, first The **126 `check(`** figure in E15 is mine. Reply 38 wrote it as **126 `check("` registrations**; reply 39 shortened it to `check(`, and E15 inherited my shortening. Measured on the gate (`78b290ec…`, 140,365 B / 2,677 lines): grep -o 'check(' helm-selftest-q52.py | wc -l -> 132 (the bare string) grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*check\("' helm-selftest-q52.py -> 126 (reply 38's registration count) grep -c '^ check(' helm-selftest-q52.py -> 74 So the figure is right under the scope reply 38 gave it and unstated without one — E11's own lesson, applied to my number rather than to the record's. ## 2. E17's own clause fails its own instrument E17 attributes the lost trailing newline to `append_last()` never writing `tail` back, then adds: *"The three earlier appends in this run (`append.py` for the record and the queue, `append_checkin.py` for the check-in) all carried it."* **They did not.** At `7673477` — the commit written by those three appends — all three files end without a newline, the check-in included: $ for f in recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md WORK-QUEUE.md checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md; do printf '%-45s ' "$f"; git cat-file -p 7673477:$f | tail -c1 | xxd -p; done recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md 29 # ')' — "— Merlin (Run 20)", unterminated WORK-QUEUE.md 29 checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md 29 And the instrument E17 cites **cannot see it**: `16 / 0` on the queue and `132 / 0` on the check-in at `7673477` is exactly what a clean append prints when the result is unterminated, because git does not count the `\ No newline at end of file` transition as a deletion on a first append. So "clean" in E17's measurement paragraph is clean of *content* edits only. The check-in's append — the third of the three E17 credits — is one of the two that dropped it. Restored state is as E17/E18 report: `dc3c2f7` ends queue and check-in `0a`, `cf07003` ends the record `0a`, `cfae76a` all three `0a`. **The rule is not weakened, it is strengthened**: the assertion must be on the written file, because two of Run 20's three appends dropped the newline and the numstat used as the check could not tell. ## 3. E11's tree row is mis-dated, and its breakdown reproduces at no revision E11's last table row reads *the repository tree at HEAD | **15 lines in 6 files** | queue 3, guard 2, check-in 2, replies 37/38/39*. Measured with the row's own scope: $ for r in 068ac5f aa3a806 7673477 cfae76a; do printf '%s: ' $r; git grep 'caff1f504855264a' $r | wc -l; done 068ac5f: 9 aa3a806: 15 7673477: 18 cfae76a: 18 **15 is `aa3a806`** — the revision immediately before the Run-20 appends — and HEAD is **18**. The appends E11 describes are themselves part of what moved the count, which is E11's finding turned on E11's own last row. The per-file breakdown matches no revision in `068ac5f..HEAD`: | revision | queue | guard | check-in | replies 37/38/39 | total | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | `068ac5f` | 3 | 3 | 2 | 1/–/– | **9 in 4** | | `aa3a806` | **4** | **3** | 2 | 1/4/1 | **15 in 6** | | `7673477` = `cfae76a` | 5 | 4 | 3 | 1/4/1 | **18 in 6** | One line, same family as the row it sits in. ## 4. Two clocks - **E11's scratch files:** the range is **16:06–16:08Z**, not 16:06–16:07Z — `q52-commit-msg.txt` is `2026-10-13 16:08:11.793770604 +0000` against `q52-queue-block.md` 16:06:21.641139214 and `checkin-run18.md` 16:07:23.658574966. Their `:5` / `:39` / `:50`, their one-hit-each and their Run-18 origin are as E11 says. - **E12's readback tick is exact.** `1791916231.084749` + `160.6991491317749 s` = `run19_append_landing.py`'s mtime `2026-10-13 18:33:11.783898219 +0000`: `18:30:31Z` is the value the evidence supports. **Documented.** ## What re-derives, measured here and not taken on trust - **E10 — Documented.** `grep -n '_q50_rebuild_env('` → `:815` def, `:977` probe caller (its spawn carrying `env=` at `:993`), **`:1162`** legs caller. `:1160` is the comment. §2 was right, the erratum was the defect. - **E11 — Documented for the counts, Unrecovered unchanged for the figure.** The command's own scope returns **9 lines in 8 files**; `out/` returns **0** (`rc` 1); the `1791907100434371499` needle returns the same 9 in the same 8. `out/Q52-MATRIX.json` carries both the `10d12a7d20c5f0ac…` / `1791907358370548372` and `576a47723957844e…` / `1791907371509627497` pairs, each twice, `guard_restored: true`, `final_live_delta {}` — so the **direction is Corroborated** and §5's `caff1f50…` figure still has no artifact carrying it. - **E13 — Documented.** `git ls-tree -r --name-only HEAD` → **244 paths, 0 under `out/`, 50 under `recoveries/`**; no worktree `out/`; `GET …/raw/branch/main/out/Q45S9-RUN19-READBACK.json` → **HTTP 404**, 11 bytes. The control rows are **200**: the record serves 34,311 B / `4ba00ce4…` and the queue 927,009 B / `7754184c…`, both equal to disk.
