Answers checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md Run 17 (Q51, landing commit 57d8e6b) and recoveries/helm-runwide-census-hoist.md, both read from main over the anonymous raw path. Every figure the item rests on was re-measured this tick on the pipe's own instrument — /root/crucible/q51-pipe/verify_q51.py, 16 direct gate invocations (4 named rows + the 11 regression fixtures + the file-level checks) — not through your run_*.py: those write into your out/, and I do not overwrite another party's artifacts. Nothing you shipped moves. The item is met; Q51 is closed below. One defect of mine, five precision items.

0. My mistakes first

  1. My Q51 item text named the wrong gate in its own second clause. The queue's 06:52Z block (restated at da28ef0) says: "with the shipped Q50 gate (a951dbe8…) in the same cell, run-wide and window delta are both {}." The Q50 gate is the pre-fix gate: in the named cell it produces a window FAIL (its own detector catches the write and restores) and a run-wide PASS — the very miss the item exists to fix. That clause can only be measured on the patched gate. You resolved it the only honest way (blank cell on the armed Q51 gate, discriminator on the Q51 twin) and I am logging my wording as the defect rather than your reading as a deviation. The first clause carries the same root cause: it names the disarmed twin 6b1c431f…, a revision the fix necessarily supersedes (b1d96976…). One item, one defect, mine.
  2. My own reproduction is not side-effect-free and I should say so before you find it in the numbers. My disarmed-named invocation moved the live held pin's ctime_ns again: 1791898514021357042 → 1791899766074625909 (the restore trace; bytes, sha256 and mtime_ns unchanged). The pipe adds one more durable ctime trace to the three your records cite. It is disclosed here, and in the queue block, rather than left to be inferred.
  3. Carried, unchanged, logged and never deleted: reply 35 §0.1's loose "one line" sizing, §0.2's acceptance of the weaker instrument, §0.3's detector-less scratch patch.

1. Every claim, and my tier for it

Tier key: Documented = reproduced this tick with my own tools; Corroborated = consistent with artifacts I can read but did not re-derive; Testimony only = asserted, no artifact I can reach; Unrecovered = no retained artifact.

  • The two gaps. grep -n on your tree: the Q50 gate's spawn call at :917, its _q44_held_before = _q44_held_census() at :1388 — 471 lines later, arithmetic checks. On the Q51 gate: before-read :890, branch :893, spawn :948, foot census :2477, foot check("Q44" at :2482 (:2476 on the Q50 gate). Documented.
  • The pair, by digest and count. Armed gate e4967da9bdc45378… = 134,427 B / 2,558 lines / 125 registrations; base a951dbe87d3394e0… = 134,086 / 2,552 / 125; disarmed twin b1d969767f347d… = 134,378 / 2,557 / 125. My diff between armed and twin prints one hunk: the env=_q50_probe_env) hand-off folded into the timeout=180) line. Documented. (Registration count is grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*check\(' = 125 — see §2.1.)
  • The diff is a complete and faithful record of the change — verified functionally, not by reading it. patch -R of out/DIFF-vs-q50.txt against your Q51 gate, written only into my scratch, yields a file byte-identical to /root/crucible/q50/helm-selftest-q50.py (a951dbe8…, 2,552 lines, cmp clean). So: the move is the whole change, and nothing else in 2,558 lines moved. Your 76 lines / c8b2ac1367fbe5f2… / 2 hunks / +33 − 27 / 2,552 + 33 − 27 = 2,558 all re-derived. Documented.
  • The defect row is real and it is the right control. base-q49-named: rc 1, 165/9, run-wide Q44 PASS, and out/Q51-MATRIX.json's guard_live_delta shows the held pin moving to the 14 B / 784b9bde… payload with guard_restored: true — a live write the run-wide instrument did not see. Documented.
  • The item's two cells, reproduced on my own invocations of your shipped gates (subject env-root-v1.py 76b55b8a…, --skip-tests):
    • armed × named (Q48_ROOT=/root/.helm): 166/9, PASS Q44, PASS Q50;
    • armed × unset: 166/9, PASS Q44, PASS Q50;
    • disarmed × named: 164/11, FAIL Q50 … the probe-window census moved (the detector line names the payload) and FAIL Q44 — before/after identical on size, sha256 and mtime_ns, differing on ctime_ns alone (1791898514021357042 → 1791899766074625909, my run's own restore trace). Documented.
  • Green pair. Yours: rc 0, 175/0, 13,929 B, five logs. Mine, one fresh invocation of the armed gate with HELM_COLLECTOR=/root/crucible/q48/helm-collect.py (4e45021d… — not the deployed ee0b36a8…) and Q48_ROOT unset: rc 0, 175/0, 13,929 B stdout, 13.33 s, VERDICT: ALL GATES PASS, both instruments green, final live delta {}. Documented.
  • Regressions 11/11. My own eleven invocations, all at the expected rc: n1–n5, noparse-with-markers.py, dep-unparseable.py, collector-undecodable.py, broken_dep.py rc 2; collector-latin1.py and collector-bom.py rc 0 at 175/0 / 13,929 B each. Documented. (VERDICT: ALL REGRESSIONS HOLD is printed by your runner and not stored in out/Q51-REGRESSIONS.json — I re-derived the outcome from the rows and my own runs.)
  • Live state, delta 0. snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f8… / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4… / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071 — each measured on my side, matching your §6 to the digit. 0 sandboxes (find for helm-legs-* / helm-q39-* → 0). Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched (ee0b36a8… / 7ed1bca8… / 12570786… / 73869998… / 5c67473d…), and grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR on the deployed gate = 0 — Q40's finding re-confirmed by me. Documented.
  • "32 invocations" = 5 green + 5 matrix + 11 regressions + 11 void — checks as arithmetic; the void eleven are exactly what your defect 1 describes. Corroborated.
  • Landing evidence, re-read by me over the anonymous raw path (no credential): recoveries/helm-runwide-census-hoist.md 200 / 12,041 B / 0ab0cc10829e1482…, WORK-QUEUE.md 200 / 871,015 B / 3d47d296b1ba19b3…, and your check-in's cited revision 57d8e6b = 55,478 B / a79488adfb246931… (git cat-file -s/-p on this host). Your out/Q51-READBACK.json agrees with my independent fetch on all three. Documented.
  • The finding beyond the criterion — the run-wide check failing on ctime alone after a byte-exact restore — is in your quoted log and reproduced in mine. Its two caveats hold as written. Documented.

2. Five precision items (none falsifies a claim)

  1. grep -c 'check(' returns 131, not 125. The record's 125 is the registration count and it is right (grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*check\('); the other six matches are the def check( definition and five prose mentions. Worth one clause so a later re-runner does not read the difference as drift — this exact shape has already cost this lane a comparator defect once.
  2. The foot check's name has aged past its scope. It still reads "the live held directory is unchanged by every leg in the run" while Q51 made it span the admission probe — which is not a leg — and it is now the instrument that fires on a restore trace no leg produced. The body was to stay byte-for-byte, so this is naming only; naming is the whole reason it is worth a line.
  3. Three anchors cite one statement. Your Q50-gate prose says the spawn is :917, my own Q50 queue block says :919, and the patch script's ordering assert keys on the env= line (:948 on the Q51 gate). All three are true lines of the same subprocess.run( statement; without a clause saying which anchor is meant, a later reader sees :917 vs :919 and thinks one of them slipped.
  4. Your defect 2 is wider than stated. The empty Q44/Q50 cells are not only in out/Q51-MATRIX.json: out/Q51-GREEN.json and out/Q51-REGRESSIONS.json carry q50_check_lines: [] on every row, and the regression rows also carry verdict/passed/failed as null. The comparator matched line prefixes in all three artifacts, so no JSON of the three shows either instrument — only the saved logs do, which is what §3/§4 correctly rest on. My verification had to read the logs too; state it as three artifacts, not one.
  5. Disk. You record 45 GiB free of 153 GiB; df -h / at 13:55Z reads 46 GiB free of 154 GiB (71 % used). Measurement-time drift, not a contradiction — your own Run 12 records 46/154.

3. The consequence I would put beside the follow-on

The run-wide instrument's failure in the disarmed cell is a restore trace, and after Q51 a run that wrote live and restored is indistinguishable to it from a run that wrote live and left it — both FAIL. That is the conservative direction and the right trade for a detector, so this is not a criticism; it is the second-order effect worth one sentence in the queue: any in-gate restore of the held pin, yours or a future guard's, now fails Q44 for the whole run, and the ctime stamp is the only thing separating "delta {}" from "moved" in the run-wide record. It is also why the lane's one open unit stays the Q45 §9 follow-on rather than a new item off this one: attribution is already covered (Q49's per-leg census on the deploy leg, Q50's window on the probe), and what Q51 adds is coverage of the last unwatched stretch of the run.

4. Asks

  • Yours, held, all Alexander's, unchanged: the §4 adoption cp of collector 4e45021d… + gate e4967da9… (Q51 supersedes a951dbe8…); the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08); the Q13 publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action). Nothing here is mine to take.
  • Mine to you: none. Your Next 1 — the pipe's verification of this run — is this file.
  • Standing, re-checked this tick: repository visibility private: false / internal: false with anonymous inbox/seed-2026-09-26.json 200 / 9,484 B and a 404 control → the public-with-pending-material mismatch stays a §4 gate. Nothing from inbox/ is quoted here, in the queue block, or in the delivery.

5. Artifacts

  • Instrument: /root/crucible/q51-pipe/verify_q51.py (my own; scratch only).
  • Results: Q51-PIPE-VERIFY.json; logs v1-green, v2-blank-cell, v4-armed-unset, v3-disarmed-cell, reg-*; my own digest-verified backup in q51-pipe/backup/.
  • Final live check by my instrument after all 16 invocations: bytes / sha256 / mtime_ns delta {} on both objects, ctime on the held pin moved once (my run's restores), 0 sandboxes.
