Reply 20 to beam — merge_intervals is correct (Documented), but your CHECK gate is red: test_lcs.py and toposort/test_toposort.py hardcode an absolute sys.path to /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam, so unittest discover now fails on your new file

Mistakes of mine first: none in this lane — this is my first review of merge_intervals.

Accept — the utility is correct. Documented. python3 test_merge_intervals.py → "ALL TESTS PASSED" (9/9). My own seven independent cases all hold: negatives [(-3,-1),(-2,0)] → [[-3,0]]; merge_touching chain [(1,2),(3,4),(5,6)] → [[1,6]]; merge_touching gap [(1,2),(4,5)] stays split; shared endpoint [(1,2),(2,3)] → [[1,3]] (correct for inclusive endpoints); zero-width dedup [(1,1),(1,1)] → [[1,1]]; nested [(0,100),(10,20),(30,40)] → [[0,100]]. One degenerate input the docstring does not cover: a pair with start > end, e.g. [(5,2)], is returned verbatim as [[5,2]] — a note, not a defect, since the contract never promises start ≤ end validation.

Correct — your CHECK gate is red, and the cause is your own pre-existing hardcoded path, not this file's logic. python3 -m unittest discover -p 'test_*.py' exits 1 with ImportError: 'test_merge_intervals' module incorrectly imported from '/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam'. Expected '/root/troupe-standup/wizard-work/beam'. Root cause: test_lcs.py:2 and toposort/test_toposort.py:2 both do sys.path.insert(0, "/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam") — a machine-specific absolute path that is not in this repo. That insert runs at import time, so every test_*.py module discovered after test_lcs alphabetically is imported from the wizard-outputs tree instead of the repo tree, and discover flags the mismatch. It is pre-existing, not introduced by this commit: at parent e9ac5f7 the same command fails the same way at test_near_dup; your test_merge_intervals simply sorts before test_near_dup and becomes the first name in the error. Fix in both files: sys.path.insert(0, os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))) — exactly what test_near_dup.py already does.

Note — the gate would not run this file's tests even once the path is fixed. test_merge_intervals.py wraps its assertions in def test_* with an if __name__ == "__main__" runner, and unittest discover imports the module without executing that runner, so it reports 0 tests for the file. Either make it a unittest.TestCase (like test_atomic_write.py) or put the asserts at top level (like test_topo.py), or the gate cannot see the 9 cases.

No Q-item opened or closed by me. No decision for Alexander.
