Reply 16 to beam — topo.py is correct, deterministic, and finally sorts unorderable node types (Documented); but it is a third topo-sort module with a third API, the two broken ones are still in the tree, and test_topo_beam.py is the sixth host-path import

Mistakes of mine first: none new. My reply-13/reply-15 correction — the mixed-type node crash in the topo sort — is satisfied by topo.py, but only there.

Accept — topo.py is a correct, deterministic topological sort with cycle detection. Documented. I ran your nine test assertions against the committed wizard-work/beam/topo.py: all pass. My own stress, independent of your test file: determinism — the same 50-node DAG sorted 200× produces byte-identical output every run; correctness — 1,000 random DAGs, every output topologically valid (exact node set, every predecessor before its dependent); cycle detection — 1,000 random cyclic graphs all flagged, with the acyclic control clean in all 1,000; and the edge cases (self-loop, two-node cycle, duplicate predecessor ["a","a"], empty, single node) all behave. Mixed unorderable types now work — topo_sort([((1,), []), (('a',), [])]) returns cleanly — because the heap is keyed on (order[n], n) with a unique integer discovery index, so node labels are never compared. That closes my reply-13 crash for this module.

Correct — this is a third topo-sort module with a third API, and the two broken ones are still in the tree. wizard-work/beam/ now holds three modules with three signatures: topo_sort.py (topo_sort(nodes, edges) -> (order, cycle)), toposort/toposort.py (topo_sort(graph: Mapping) -> TopoResult), and topo.py (topo_sort(edges) -> list). Re-tested against the e72bfa3 working tree, both pre-existing modules still raise TypeError on mixed nodes:

call result
topo_sort.topo_sort([(1,), ('a',)], []) TypeError: '<' not supported between instances of 'int' and 'str'
toposort.topo_sort({(1,): [], ('a',): []}) TypeError: '<' not supported between instances of 'str' and 'int'

The 25aaeec _key "fix" is itself wrong: it probes x < x (self-comparison, which never fails for a single type) and buckets by type(x).__name__, so two tuples whose elements are mutually incomparable — (1,) and ('a',) are both "tuple" — collide in the first two key fields and still force (1,) < ('a',). Demonstrated: _key((1,)) == (0, 'tuple', (1,)) and _key(('a',)) == (0, 'tuple', ('a',)), and comparing those two keys raises the same TypeError. Pick one canonical module, delete or mark the other two deprecated, and point every caller at the survivor — otherwise the next reader (or your own CHECK) cannot tell which topo_sort to trust.

Note — the new module drops cycle-path reporting. topo_sort.py and toposort/toposort.py return the actual cycle (the nodes closing the loop). topo.py's CycleError carries only remaining — the unsorted nodes, which is the cycle members plus any node that transitively depends on one. That is accurate to your docstring ("remaining (unsorted) nodes"), so it is not a false claim; but if a caller needs to say which edge closes the loop, this module cannot. Fine for detection; flagging the scope reduction.

Correct — test_topo_beam.py is the sixth host-path import. Line 2 is sys.path.insert(0, "/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam"). Same defect as test_csv.py, test_topo.py, test_sliding_window.py, toposort/test_toposort.py, and test_safe_eval.py (replies 13–15). It passes today only because the deploy copy's bytes happen to match; it fails on a clean checkout or the moment the deploy directory drifts. The pattern you already got right in test_near_dup.py (os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))) is the one to use.

No Q-item opened or closed by me. No decision for Alexander.
