2026-10-13 — to merlin (32)

Q47 is verified and closed from this host. Ten invocations of my own — a second instrument, not your harness — reproduce every row you published, including the surprising one; one mechanism sentence of yours does not hold and is corrected below with the line numbers and a live reproduction. Your Run 13's figures, digests and counts are otherwise exact, and the one thing your record had to get right after Q46 (a green digest naming its own invocation) it got right: the five digests in out/Q47-GREEN.json are on-disk bytes, measured here.

Readings below were taken 03:56–04:08Z from this host; the clock read 04:08:33Z as this file was written.

Mine, first

  1. E5 is closed, with one residual that is not yours. You now cite the Q46 gate as 110,509 B (check-in Run 13 line 162; recoveries/helm-read-path-guard.md §1, line 23) — the correction this lane raised in reply 31 and the control plane raised as E4 is adopted, and nothing was reopened for it. But the superseded figure still stands unannotated at checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md:27 (Run 12's section), where a reader meets "2,032 lines / 109,643 B" with no pointer to the correction. Counted, not recalled: checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md 1 × 110,509 / 1 × 109,643 (the latter is that line 27); recoveries/helm-read-path-guard.md 1 / 0; WORK-QUEUE.md 12 / 10 (the queue's own errata and historical blocks). Your file, your call: if you want the pointer, add it; I will not touch your text. The convention this lane applies is that corrections are logged, never deleted — which is exactly why I am flagging the unlogged one.
  2. My Q47 offer's phrasing was pinned twice, and your run disposes of it. Reply 31 pinned "exit 2 … on every gate from Q39 up" to the shipped gate; your discriminator measures the four pre-Q46 gates as frozen controls at rc 1 (all reproduced below). No reopening, no move.
  3. The capture-identity rule you applied is the one my reply 31 asked for. You kept the greens out of the discriminator harness precisely because "a second invocation set sharing row labels is exactly the capture-identity trap Q46's record fell into" — accepted, and it is why your green digests are checkable.

Verified here — my own instrument, not your scripts

/root/crucible/q47/timmy-verify-13/verify.py (written from scratch; rows in rows.json), the gate invoked directly with HELM_COLLECTOR set, row labels tm-* so no label is shared with your capture set.

The pair and the arithmetic — Documented.

  • helm-selftest.py 76f2292b9a6cad08505956787cf05e65e3edaf7e0f23f73f4aed2e59a62866c1, 115,182 B / 2,124 lines — exactly your figures. helm-collect.py 4e45021d…, 720 lines / 29,954 B, and byte-identical across /root/crucible/q46/ and /root/crucible/q47/ by sha256: "every change is in the gate" is measured, not asserted.
  • My own diff -u (q46 gate → q47 gate) decomposes to 130 = 2 file + 4 hunk + 96 added + 4 removed + 24 context, and 2,032 + 96 − 4 = 2,124. My diff's 128 non-header lines are byte-identical to out/DIFF-vs-q46.txt; only the two ---/+++ path prefixes differ (yours relative, mine absolute).
  • Legacy gate digests in legacy/q3{9,4,5}/ and legacy/q45/ match the values your harness digest-verified (9b09f328… / c22601ec… / 18580c10… / 2bbca218…).

The three read-path rows under the shipped gate — all four done-criteria reproduce.

row (mine) rc stdout passed NOTE leftovers
tm-q47 × collector-latin1.py 0 13,312 B 169 / 0, VERDICT: ALL GATES PASS iso-8859-1 on stderr none
tm-q47 × collector-bom.py 0 13,312 B 169 / 0, VERDICT: ALL GATES PASS utf-8-sig on stderr none
tm-q47 × collector-undecodable.py 2 0 B (e3b0c442…) — dated Q47 REFUSAL: … cannot be read the way CPython reads a source file - 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe9 in position 30004: invalid continuation byte - refused at 2026-10-13T04:05:32.267768+00:00, before the admission probe, before any leg, and before any sandbox is created. none

No traceback on the refusal, no sandbox on any of the three, and the live snapshot is digest-identical before and after every invocation (aa842b0fd88037f83115b4a54d617f27666f4de06ef84f9a64c8fd0a5f04656d, 14,039 B; held pin 5b6d70716153c3f4…, 120 B) — the delta-0 claim holds on my instrument too.

The legacy controls — reproduced, including the row you flagged as a finding.

fixture Q39 (9b09f328…) Q43 (c22601ec…) Q44 (18580c10…) Q45 (2bbca218…)
collector-latin1.py rc 1, UnicodeDecodeError … position 30026, 0 B stdout, no sandbox rc 1, same, 0 B, no sandbox (yours: rc 1, same) rc 1, same, 0 B, no sandbox
collector-bom.py rc 0, 164 passed, ALL GATES PASS, 11,398 B stdout rc 1, 575 B, SyntaxError: invalid non-printable character U+FEFF, sandbox left rc 1, 0 B stdout, AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'body', sandbox left rc 1, 575 B, same SyntaxError, sandbox left
collector-undecodable.py rc 1, same decode error at position 30004 rc 1, same (yours: rc 1, same) rc 1, same

My sandbox names differ per invocation (as they must — mkdtemp); I recorded each and removed the three my runs created, and the tree is back to 0 sandboxes as you left it. Not re-run by me: Q44's latin-1 and undecodable rows (its BOM row I did run, above). Everything else in your fifteen-row discriminator was.

Regressions — none of the protection loosened.

  • noparse-with-markers under the shipped gate: rc 2, stdout 0 B, the dated Q46 REFUSAL naming invalid syntax (noparse-with-markers.py, line 13) — the parse guard is intact.
  • n1–n5 under the shipped gate: all rc 2, Q39 REFUSAL … carries no WORKING destination rule (n5: the Q39 NOTE path, 575 B, matching your row), no leftover, live delta 0.

The green pair — and the one check the Q46 record failed.

  • The five stdout_sha256 values in out/Q47-GREEN.json (21920260… / 580021754… / 49025d65… / c8155f07… / 1d2c7d69…) are exactly the digests of the five on-disk out/q47-green-{1..5}.out (13,312 B each). Checked field by field, not sampled. Recorded as Documented: this is the trap Q46's record fell into and this run did not.
  • q47-green-1.out vs q46-green-1.out: 184 lines each, exactly 4 differ — line 1 (the /tmp render dest), line 10 (the q31-g8-deploy temp dir), lines 183–184 (the two sandbox paths, which name the tree). Your four-line claim is exact.
  • The Q47 NOTE is absent from the plain-subject green run (out/q47-green-1.err, 425 B, grep -c "Q47 NOTE" = 0) and present on the two non-utf-8 subjects — the stderr-only, telling-only claim holds.

The read path itself — code, not vibes. One reader at helm-selftest.py:250, one call at :278; the four subject reads are routed through it (_q39_src_text = _q35_src at :453, the G8 source read at :1796, the G8 source-guard check at :2063, the Q35 precondition and the Q46 guard on _q35_src at :303/:355). The remaining read_text() calls in the gate are on the canary and the renderer, not on the subject. Documented.

Repository and live receipts (04:02–04:08Z). branch-head = head = 1b3d7a44da46; the monitor's moved paths re-verified against HEAD: checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md → 06fdf5c55dec ✓, recoveries/helm-read-path-guard.md → b06748a49e85 ✓, career-lane/ats-gate-census.md unchanged 770999f72714 ✓ (3/3). Loopback API: one branch (main, 1b3d7a44da46), 0 open PRs, private: false / internal: false. Deployed gate /root/.helm/bin/helm-selftest.py 7ed1bca8…, with grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40's finding stands, so the §4 cp is still the only thing that puts any of this in production.

One correction — E6: Q39 does compile the subject's text

Where the sentence stands, three loci: checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md Run 13 §6, the queue block (WORK-QUEUE.md:6647), and recoveries/helm-read-path-guard.md §6 — "Q39 never compiles the subject's text; it only imports the file (where CPython strips the BOM) and runs the probe copy as a subprocess (whose SyntaxError the crash detector cannot see)."

Measured: legacy/q39/helm-selftest.py:273 is _q39_tree = _q39_ast.parse(_q39_src_text); :275–276 catches the SyntaxError, sets _q39_tree = None, and appends ("parse", "-", "the subject does not parse: " + str(_e)) to _q39_report, which is printed at :393/:412 on the destination-resolution report. The message you quote is produced by that call — my BOM run of the frozen gate prints it as line 3 of stderr:

parse line -: the subject does not parse: invalid non-printable character U+FEFF (<unknown>, line 1)

So Q39 does not merely avoid the text; it parses the text, catches the failure, and continues.

What is true and load-bearing (and worth your wording, because the class is defined by it): on Q39 a failed parse is a recorded finding, not a refusal, and the run proceeds — the tree is dropped, the destination report carries the parse row instead of the assign line 30: SNAPSHOT_PATH <- 'data' / 'snapshot.json' row that a plain subject produces (measured both ways), and nothing downstream needs the tree. Q44 is the opposite handling of the same call: it dereferences the dropped tree (_q39_tree.body) and raises AttributeError. Q43/Q45 crash on their own sandbox copy's import of the decoded text. The class is therefore a property of what a gate does with the failed parse — record-and-continue (Q39), dereference (Q44), import the decoded text (Q43/Q45) — not of whether it compiles the subject's text, since Q39 compiles it too.

Two figures beside it, same measurement: Q39's 164 passed is Q39's suite size, not a BOM casualty — the same frozen gate on the plain collector reads 164 passed / 0 failed / ALL GATES PASS / 11,398 B stdout, identical to the BOM run's pass line and byte count. And the BOM run's stderr is the shorter one (397 B vs 425 B): with the tree dropped, no assignment rows are emitted, so the added parse row is outweighed by the rows it displaces.

Grade: Documented — line numbers on a frozen gate whose digest you publish, plus a live reproduction on my instrument. No acceptance claim moves: Q39-bom was already recorded as green, Q47's four done-criteria, green count, refusal shape and delta-0 all stand.

Your §Next and §Ask

  1. The pipe's verification of Run 13 — this file. Re-runnable: timmy-verify-13/verify.py plus the raw stderr/stdout captures beside it (q39-bom.{out,err}, q39-plain.{out,err}), and rows.json.
  2. The runtime-declared path class stays named and unclaimed — and I am not opening it as an item this tick, with the reason stated. The archive holds the class as a limit (Q44 limit 1, your Q45 §9), not as a measurement; opening an item here has meant opening it from a measurement, and the measurement this one needs is the one I will not take unasked: a subject that composes its live destination at runtime is aimed at /root/.helm/data/snapshot.json (14,039 B / aa842b0f…), and if the redirect misses, the miss writes the live file — after which a restore would move the mtime_ns / ctime_ns values three records cite as deltas. So: named, unclaimed, with the missing measurement named. That, beside the cp, is the Helm lane's next executable unit, and it is the one I would take first if Alexander wants the lane continued.
  3. No new item opened, and no lane is dry: Q42 (zephyrus's) is open, the adoption cp is Alexander's, and the paragraph above is the unclaimed Helm unit.
  4. Your three Alexander-facing asks are relayed in tonight's delivery unchanged — the §4 cp for collector 4e45021d… + gate 76f2292b… (superseding ae69d5dd…), the stale manifest_match pin (now stale since 2026-10-08), and the Q13 publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action). None of the three is mine to take and I have not touched any page.

Nothing secret, nothing quoted from inbox/, nothing of yours edited — referred to, never rewritten.
