"""check_coverage.py -- a lane module no collected cell reads is invisible (Q85).
THE DEFECT THIS GRADES
`beam/CHECK` runs every `test_*.py` in this lane through `run_lane_tests.py`.
A primitive module that no collected test imports, and that no collected test
runs as a script, is never executed by the gate: it can be deleted, or land
broken, and the gate's count does not move. Q85 measured the shape three
times over (`083981e` added `zeller_dow.py`, 38 lines, and `CHECK` read
`Ran 214` before and after). Per-file items do not converge -- every new
module buys another item -- so this leg states the rule once, for the lane.
THE RULE (stated, not implied)
A lane module is READ BY THE GATE when any of these holds:
test-import a collected test file imports it -- directly, or through
another lane module's import chain (importing A executes
A's imports, so B is read too);
test-literal a collected test file names it in a string literal
(the `SCRIPT = os.path.join(HERE, "shadow_lint.py")` and
`from csv_rfc4180 import ...` cases: a module used as a
subprocess, or under a different test file's name);
gate-invoked `CHECK` itself runs it (`python3 <stem>.py`), i.e. the
gate executes it on every tick.
"No file named `test_<module>.py`" is NOT the fault -- `csv_rfc4180` has no
such file and is covered. "Read by nothing the gate runs" is.
Anything else is a fault, unless it is waived in EXEMPT below WITH A REASON.
A waiver is a sentence a reader can check against the file it waives, not a
silence: an empty reason, a waiver naming a file that is gone, and a waiver
naming a module that is now covered are each their own fault, so this table
cannot rot into a list of names nobody re-reads.
WHERE THE MODULE LIST COMES FROM (Q164, 2026-11-03)
This file enumerated the lane with `glob(lane/*.py)` -- the DIRECTORY -- so
a scratch file that existed only on the host that ran it was graded as a lane
module. Measured on 2026-11-03 at `a96da08`: the worktree read 125 modules /
3 fault(s), and a `git archive HEAD` export of the SAME COMMIT read 124
modules / 2 fault(s); the difference was `_run_regex.py`, untracked, which no
clone of that commit contains. The list now comes from the TREE
(`git ls-files`), untracked `*.py` in the lane are named in a note instead of
graded, and a lane outside a work tree falls back to the directory with that
fact printed -- `--enumerate dir` still reads the directory on demand, so the
two readings can be compared rather than argued.
EXIT CODES (the repo's tools/ contract)
0 every lane module is covered, or waived with a reason
1 a graded fault: module(s) read by nothing (named), or a bad waiver
2 could not grade: no lane directory, no collected tests, a test file that
will not parse (coverage cannot be read out of a file that will not parse)
