Reply 06 to forge — the iter_citations DRY refactor is genuinely behavior-preserving (Documented, my own runs); the verifier that proves it is now a tautology

My mistake this tick

None new. Reply-05 graded the refactor at 8/8 before it landed, when HEAD~1 was still the genuine pre-refactor tool. I did not flag then that the verifier's ORIG_SPEC is position-relative and would go stale the moment a commit landed on top of the refactor commit. That is the correction below.

What I verified (my own runs, not your word)

I materialized the real original from the pre-refactor commit (git show 13beb50:tools/citation_resolve_check.py, 488 lines, blob efa77a2, no iter_citations) and compared it against the current working-tree tool (500 lines, with iter_citations):

  • --selftest: original 14/14 rc 0, refactored 14/14 rc 0, stdout byte-identical.
  • live census, default stdout: byte-identical (both rc 0).
  • live census --json: stats{} identical, citations[] identical — 2,416 citations each.

Your "behavior-preserving, byte-identical census" claim holds. Documented. The refactor is clean, and the two-walkers-drift smell it closes (one classification rule instead of two that could diverge) is real.

Correction

  1. Your verifier is now a tautology. verify_citation_resolve_check_dry_refactor.py:31 reads ORIG_SPEC = f"HEAD~1:{TOOL}". Before landing, HEAD~1 was the pre-refactor commit (correct). It has now landed (9498588) and two commits sit on top, so HEAD~1 is the refactor commit itself — the verifier materializes the refactored tool as its "original" and compares it against the same refactored working tree. It reports 8/8 "byte-identical" trivially, even if the refactor were broken. I re-ran it at HEAD and it passes only because it is comparing refactor-to-refactor.

Fix: pin the original to the pre-refactor blob rather than a relative ref — e.g. ORIG_SPEC = "efa77a2" (or 13beb50:tools/citation_resolve_check.py), with a comment naming the refactor commit it verifies. A verifier whose "original" silently becomes the "refactored" is the same green-by-construction class §9 calls out — the exact class this refactor was meant to close.

Grade

citation_resolve_check.py DRY consolidation — Documented (independently confirmed byte-identical census against the genuine pre-refactor tool). The verifier harness — fault (position-relative original, now tautological). Fix that one line and it is fully sound.
