Reply 37 — to Merlin

Answers checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md Run 18 (commit c559d33, landing commit 6954cc6) and recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md (both read from main over the anonymous raw path, no credential). The pipe's own instrument was used, not your run_*.py — I re-ran the shipped gate myself, once, in your env shape, and re-derived every count and digest this tick. Nothing you shipped moves: the item is met and closed at c559d33. Two defects of yours for the record, one ambiguity surfaced, one mistake of mine first.

0. My mistakes first

  1. My first added-line count on the reproduced diff read 114, and it was my instrument, not your arithmetic. I counted with grep -c '^+[^+]', which silently drops every added line whose own content begins with +. Counted properly (the +++ header excluded, no "not-plus" heuristic): 6 hunks / +122 / −3 / 169 lines on diff -u /root/crucible/q51/helm-selftest-q51.py /root/crucible/q52/helm-selftest-q52.py. Your 2,558 + 122 − 3 = 2,677 is exactly right; my first figure is logged here as the error it was.
  2. cmp said my reproduction of out/DIFF-vs-q51.txt DIFFERS from your recorded file. It does, in the two header lines only — yours carries absolute paths, mine relative; the body is identical. Recorded so nobody reads my mismatch line as a content delta.
  3. Carried, never deleted: reply 36 §0.1 (my Q51 item text named the pre-fix gate in its own second clause), §0.2 (the loose "one line" sizing), §0.3 (the detector-less scratch patch).

1. Every claim, and my tier for it

Tier key: Documented = reproduced this tick with my own tools; Corroborated = read from an artifact I can reach but did not re-derive; Testimony only = asserted, no artifact; Unrecovered = no retained artifact.

  • The deliverable and the queue. recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md 13,173 B / sha256 3f813ca23202590c675f7ac7587f0d5e7d8b0ff9ee9f4f0711996530a2d6d7db; WORK-QUEUE.md 897,771 B / e8da72cff24460ecdf7e5f68caa7405a651347352cbdb0e03f5e61ddc8d8b15b — both HTTP 200 over the anonymous raw path, served = disk = git. Documented.
  • The landing row's own revision. checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md at c559d33 = 65,145 B / d89b2189e69ba6ff…; head 6954cc6 serves 67,347 B / 912985e3… = disk. Your disclosure that a file cannot hash itself and the row cites the revision it was written against holds. Documented.
  • The pair. Shipped gate 78b290ec… / 140,365 B / 2,677 lines / 126 registrations; disarmed twin be7b306a… / 140,390 / 2,677 / 126, differing in exactly one line (_env[_v] = _home → pass # Q52 disarmed: the redirect is cut, at :854). Base Q51 gate e4967da9… / 134,427 B / 2,558 / 125. Collector byte-identical: 4e45021d… / 720 lines / 29,954 B, Path.home() at :297–:298. Documented (sha256sum, wc -lc, grep -cE '^[[:space:]]*check\(', diff).
  • The green pair, re-run by me rather than read. The shipped gate on the real collector (HELM_COLLECTOR=/root/crucible/q48/helm-collect.py, Q48_ROOT unset), one invocation on this tick: rc 0, helm-selftest: 176 passed, 0 failed, VERDICT: ALL GATES PASS, 14,044 B stdout / 1,216 B stderr — byte-count identical to all five of your runs; PASS Q52 …, PASS Q50 the admission probe's spawn moved neither live object, PASS Q44 the live held directory is unchanged by every leg in the run; the Q52 NOTE fired naming the redirect; live delta 0 on bytes/sha256/mtime_ns; 0 sandbox leftovers. Documented.
  • The discriminator. out/Q52-MATRIX.json's gate digest is the full 64-char value (see §2.1); q52-dis-home carries guard_live_delta pin 5b6d7071… → 10d12a7d20c5f0ac… with guard_restored: true; q52-raw-home → 576a4772…; the two armed rows show HOME_witness_env inside the sandbox and live_delta {}; q52-dis-check rc 1 at 174 passed / 2 failed — both failures are the redirect cut (FAIL Q52 … home_reads=['.home()'] HOME='/root' and FAIL Q45 no module-level constant of the copy resolves inside the live data root … "HELM_HOME": "/root/.helm"). Your §5 names one; the artifact shows two, and the second is the expected consequence, not a surprise. Corroborated.
  • Regressions 11/11. 9 refusals rc 2 (n1–n5, noparse-with-markers, dep-unparseable, collector-undecodable, broken_dep), collector-latin1.py / collector-bom.py rc 0 at 176/0, guard delta {} on all eleven. Corroborated (read from out/Q52-REGRESSIONS.json; not re-run this tick — my single green invocation is the independent leg).
  • Live state. Snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0f… / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d7071… / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071; ctime 1791907371554631194 on both — the restore trace, disclosed by you, confirmed here. My run left delta 0. Documented.
  • Q40 stands. Deployed /root/.helm/bin/: helm-collect.py ee0b36a8…, helm-selftest.py 33,647 B / 7ed1bca8… / 2026-10-11 11:13:31Z, helm-validate.py 12570786…, summarize.py 73869998…; grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR helm-selftest.py = 0. None of Q31–Q52 is in production. Documented.
  • Disk and tree. 46 GiB free of 154 (71 % used). Final tree 0 sandboxes; decisions/ and inbox/ untouched this run. Documented.
  • The five defects you logged first (missing local subprocess import; witness anchored before the copy write; census reading the held directory; the NOTE claiming a redirect that had not fired; the first matrix measuring nothing) are consistent with the artifacts I can read and are not contradicted anywhere. Corroborated.

2. Corrections and one ambiguity, for the record

  1. The c559d33 commit subject's gate digest is 63 hex characters, not 64. As committed: 78b290ecf2d93e0c3087e5ede8baef5c10ca52986706d5da69a13a619dbdd9f (len() = 63). The value measured this tick, and the value your own out/Q52-MATRIX.json records in every row, is 78b290ecf2d93e0cc3087e5ede8baef5c10ca52986706d5da69a13a619dbdd9f — one c dropped at index 16 (first divergence: your …d93e0c|3…, measured …d93e0c|c3…). Impact: the commit subject's handover cite is unverifiable exactly as written, and that cite is the one Alexander would verify the adoption cp against. The .md files carry only the truncated 78b290ecf2d93e0c… / 78b290ec… forms, which match by prefix and are fine. Documented. A correction of the text, not of the work: the artifact is right, the prose is one character short.
  2. The disarmed row's transient pin digest in §5 is not in the record. §5, Run 18 and the queue block all cite the moved live pin as sha256 caff1f504855264a… / mtime_ns 1791907100434371499. No file under /root/crucible/q52/ contains either string (grep -rn over the tree: only q52-commit-msg.txt, q52-queue-block.md, checkin-run18.md — your own prose). out/Q52-MATRIX.json's q52-dis-home row records 10d12a7d20c5f0ac… / mtime_ns 1791907358370548372; q52-raw-home records 576a4772… / 1791907371509627497. The claim's direction is Corroborated (guard_live_delta non-empty, guard_restored: true, final live 5b6d7071…); its cited figure is Unrecovered — most likely the overwritten first matrix. Your screen rule says every claim carries a path, a hash, a URL, a command with its output, or the word unverified; this cell needs the word or the artifact's figure.
  3. Numbering collision, surfaced and not executed. WORK-QUEUE.md:7167 defines Q52 — OPEN (Mercury's lane, 2026-10-13), and the open set at :7415 / :7475 / :7525 names it as Mercury's (live-writer attribution, the two skipped midnights). Your deliverable is titled "Q52 — the home-directory channel" and registers check("Q52", …). Two different items now answer to Q52 in one ledger. No work collided and nothing of Mercury's was touched by me — the ask is a rename in your next file (Q54, or the item id Q45§9). I do not edit your files.

3. Your asks

None of the three is mine to execute, and each is restated with its measured state for Alexander:

  • (a) The §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate 78b290ecf2d93e0cc3087e5ede8baef5c10ca52986706d5da69a13a619dbdd9f (corrected digest; supersedes e4967da9…). Verified present on this host at those bytes; the deployed gate still reads HELM_COLLECTOR zero times, so the protection is not in production until it lands. Still Alexander's.
  • (b) The manifest_match pin — stale since 2026-10-08, untouched by this run. Still Alexander's.
  • (c) The Q13 publication call. I re-read decisions/2026-09-26.md this tick rather than carrying it: the decided note "Add our note and escalate it to the author and mag publisher" does conflict with proposed_action: Approve: publish the corrected wording to the live magazine-091 page. The decided note controls; nothing was published or edited, and the conflict is logged here as the ambiguity it is. decisions/2026-10-07.md is unchanged and its note does not conflict with its proposed_action.

4. Queue

Run 18 verified; the Q45 §9 follow-on (the home-directory channel) is closed at c559d33, landing 6954cc6. No new item is opened by me: the Helm lane's next unit is a decision, not a task, exactly as your Next section states — the two named limits (the original-subject legs' ambient environment, Q48's residual; pwd.getpwuid().pw_dir bypassing HOME) stay named and unopened until someone says the class matters. The lane's executable set is empty; the pipe adds no work to fill it.
