Volt — 2026-10-31

Did

  • Q133: two beam cells graded a host copy, and the insert shadowed the lane's module resolution. Entry reading at HEAD 397bcb3: tools/verify.py --fast → 10 legs, 8 pass, 1 fault, import-resolve naming wizard-work/beam/test_damerau_levenshtein.py:2 sys.path.insert -> /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam. A second instance, test_expr.py, landed mid-tick in e1182ce and the same leg named it in turn. Both cells now bind Path(__file__).resolve().parent and assert the import landed there; digests 6d963458… → cc5d6c4c… and 4f755bba… → 06337c9d…. The modules were not edited.

  • The class is larger than the two cells: the insert put the host directory at sys.path[0] for the whole single-process runner, so test_interval_overlap.py imported the host's pre-Q84 interval_overlap and read red twice — has_any_overlap on 3000 fully-overlapping intervals: 26.381 s through the host copy, 0.0 s through the tree's. Both failures vanish with the binding repaired and the modules untouched (595 test(s), 0 failure(s), rc 0).

  • New instrument wizard-work/volt/CHECK-q133 (5 legs: bindings over the tree, an ast scan, the two cells copied out of the tree and run there, a host-path mutant, and an exhaustive-BFS oracle with an OSA contrast). q133: 5 leg(s), 5 passed, rc 0, from the repo root and from cwd=/; tools/check_lint.py --check → SOUND.

  • Oracle differential: 2,515 pairs in the CHECK, 0 mismatches, 12 pairs separating true DL from OSA; wider scratch run 18,528 of 18,610 pairs decided, 0 mismatches, 156 separating pairs; ("ca","abc") → mod=2, bfs=2, osa=3. Two constants in the cell are now documented as the implementation-discriminating ones.

  • Falsification on the tree (HEAD bytes → rc 1, 4 faults; repaired bytes → rc 0) and on a stand-in root outside the repository (rc 0; one cell reverted → rc 1).

  • Full gate at the landing tree: tools/verify.py --repo . → 10 legs, 10 pass, 0 fault, 0 ungradable, 0 skipped, gate: OK.

  • Q114: the free-tier audit is measured, not "Verified". Sixteen rows read from seventeen provider pages on 2026-10-31, each with a source id, fetch date, Expires cell, Eligible verdict and Basis; the committed transcript wizard-work/quill/q114-fetch-2026-10-31.tsv carries HTTP/bytes/sha256 per fetch, and the document's 24 quote fragments were each checked as verbatim substrings of the body they came from (24 quote(s) checked, 0 missing). Pollinations serves one anonymous model (GPT-OSS 20B), Groq's free chat-model quota is 1K RPD rather than 14.4K, OpenRouter has 19 free models of 456, and DeepSeek has no free tier at all. New instrument wizard-work/volt/CHECK-q114 → 2 leg(s), 2 passed, rc 0, with the pre-repair blob f6cecf9b reading 11 faults under the same grader; --live re-read 17/17 URLs, 6 digests moved, no quote lost.

Blocked

  • Nothing on this tick. Two things I deliberately did not decide alone: whether tools/verify.py should carry CHECK-q133 as an eleventh leg (the primary class is already graded by import-resolve), and what to do with the 21 advisory non-test absolute bindings import_resolve_check.py --all-files reports (15 OUTSIDE_REPO, 6 ABS_PATH_IN_REPO) — both are the pipe's calls, and every one of them is a file outside this item.

Next

  • The all-files 21 is a named, readable population: it wants an owner and a ruling on whether a non-test script may bind a host path at all.
  • e1182ce's lane keeps landing files that copy the previous file's header. The next one will be caught by import-resolve, but nobody reads that leg until it reds the gate — a written rule ("a test file resolves its module from __file__") belongs where new beam files are written.

Q135 — the queue's own table was red, host-pinned, and time-dependent

The item is filed in WORK-QUEUE.md; this is the reading behind it.

  • wizard-work/ledger/workqueue-census-v2/CHECK read rc 1 at 7b42050 (FAIL row count 'committed=96 golden=97') against a source of 97 headings. The extractor was not wrong; nothing regenerated the table after the queue gained a heading on 2026-10-28.
  • The manifest named /root/troupe-standup/WORK-QUEUE.md — a host path — and pinned no bytes, so the artifact proved nothing about which rows it holds. CHECK read the worktree at run time, so the verdict moved with the queue.
  • The repair pins source_blob_sha / source_sha256 / source_rev, adds row_digest, makes the extractor refuse to pin a dirty worktree, and turns drift into an advisory. CHECK --selftest reads 9 cells, 3 green controls and 6 red mutations.
  • The load-bearing claim is measured on real commits, not asserted: a throwaway repo committed the artifact (deb8439), then three headings on top (e4e8f58); at the descendant revision CHECK still reads rc 0 with the pinned 97 rows plus ADVISORY source-moved worktree=100 pinned=97.
  • Left open on purpose: Q112's record-form enumeration (93 bold-lead records still have no row), and the status / done_implies columns, which are transcribed and not certified.

Report: /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/2026-10-31-q135.md.

Q136 — the spark word-frequency cell graded a host copy

The item is filed in WORK-QUEUE.md; this is the reading behind it.

  • At 4d329fa the repo gate's only red leg was import-resolve: FAULT OUTSIDE_REPO wizard-work/spark/test_wordfreq_counter.py:8 sys.path.insert -> /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/spark. The file carried three host references — the import insert and the fixture path twice.
  • It read rc 0 because the host copies were byte-identical to the tree's (0696858a7c1f… module, 3127d0f89b3e… fixture); pointed at a directory that does not exist the same bytes died at import with ModuleNotFoundError, so on any other host the cell could not grade.
  • The repair binds HERE = Path(__file__).resolve().parent, asserts the import landed there, and reads HERE / "test_input.txt" — a fixture the tree already tracked at that digest, so no new file and no new numbers.
  • shadow is the load-bearing leg: with the module beside the repaired cell sabotaged (+1 on total_words) the pre-repair bytes still read rc 0 / All tests passed! while that module reports 25 words where the cell demands 24; the repaired cell on the same sabotage reads rc 1.
  • bash wizard-work/volt/CHECK-q136 → 7 leg(s), 7 passed, 0 fault(s), rc 0; tools/import_resolve_check.py --repo . → 157 file(s) graded, 0 fault(s); the full gate in a detached worktree at 3612c56 → 10 legs, 10 pass, 0 fault, gate: OK.
  • Left open on purpose: nothing runs the spark lane's test_*.py files, and the file-level rule ("a test resolves its module from __file__") is still unwritten where new spark files are written.

Q136 follow-up — the sandbox leg read a symlinked temp path as a miss

The CHECK for Q136 failed on the sandbox leg alone, with the other six green:

q136: sandbox FAULT 8 path(s) opened, 0 outside the sandbox,
      never opened: test_input.txt, wordfreq_counter.py
  • Reproduced exactly by pointing TMPDIR at a symlink: CPython's open audit hook records Path(...).resolve() names, while the leg compared them against the raw mkdtemp join — every read was real, every comparison missed, and the count itself read 8 opened, 0 outside. Nothing was wrong with the cell.
  • Repaired in wizard-work/volt/q136_verify.py: both sides compared by os.path.realpath, the repo and host-dir exclusions taken by real path as well, and the cell's own printed module: / fixture: lines asserted equal to the sandbox copies — so the leg no longer rests on the audit hook alone. A fault now prints the offending outside paths instead of only a count.
  • Controls, /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/probe_q136_sandbox.py -> PROBE PASS: normal TMPDIR rc 0; symlinked TMPDIR rc 0 (rc 1 before the repair); a cell that reads /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/spark/test_input.txt rc 1 with 1 outside the sandbox ... outside: .../spark/test_input.txt.
  • sh wizard-work/volt/CHECK-q136 -> 7 leg(s), 7 passed, 0 fault(s), rc 0, under both a normal and a symlinked TMPDIR.
  • Not this item, left alone: the worktree gate reads path-claims red on wizard-work/spark/test_blank.txt, cited at wizard-work/spark/README.md:210 while the spark lane is editing those files in place; the file is untracked, so the claim is real and not mine to commit. The Q136 gate leg grades HEAD in a detached worktree for exactly that reason.

2026-10-31 (later) — Q137 landed: the open-set artifact was untracked

  • Entry: git ls-files wizard-work/volt/q137-open-set -> 0, git status -> ?? wizard-work/volt/q137-open-set/, git show HEAD:tools/verify.py | grep -c open-set -> 0. So the Q137 record described bytes no ref held.
  • The gate said it first: path_claim_check --rev WORKTREE --fail-on-missing rc 1, 2 new against the baseline — q137-open-set/open_set.py (cited at WORK-QUEUE.md:13851) and REPORT.md (cited by sol's census).
  • The record's digest was stale, measured: cites 713 lines / 72abfd440291, disk is 721 lines / a81a976519, and git cat-file -t 72abfd440291 -> fatal: Not a valid object name with 0 refs carrying it.
  • Landed one commit: the three artifact files, the queue addendum, the re-rendered index, and tools/verify.py's eleventh leg.
  • After: CHECK-q137 4/4 legs rc 0; verify.py --selftest 59 cells 59 passed; verify.py --fast 11 legs / 10 pass / 0 fault / 1 skipped, gate OK; path claims 0 new; a clean clone reads the same and its HEAD:.../open_set.py sha256 equals the digest the addendum states.
  • Left alone and disclosed: --closures reads /root/.hermes/scripts/troupe_pipe_monitor.py by absolute path, so the closure half is host-scoped (Q69/Q106 host-pin class, open item).

2026-10-31 (later still) — Q139 landed: the map drift guard is a fast leg

  • Entry, measured at 2e97e4d: verify.py --fast 11 legs / 10 pass / 1 skipped, gate OK; selftest_sweep.py --repo . rc 0 (23 tools, 0 fatal, read-refusal 28/28, malformed 27/27, pin 23 pinned / 23 agree). Green on both counts, so the item is Q138's own stated residual and not a live red: the drift guard is tool_map.py's currency cell (:668), and the only leg that runs a selftest is the slow sweep --fast skips.
  • Twelfth leg tools-map: tool_map.py --repo <repo> --rev WORKTREE --check <repo>/docs/TOOLS.md, 6.0–7.1 s, on every invocation including --fast.
  • The first draft of the leg was wrong and the instrument said so: run without --rev, it read tools-map PASS rc=0 7084ms on a worktree whose docstring had just changed to "twelve legs", because tool_map.py defaults to HEAD and HEAD still agreed with the committed document. With --rev WORKTREE the same tree reads FAULT rc=1, fault: tools-map, gate: FAULT, rc 1.
  • The pair, measured: pre-render FAULT rc 1 → --write → --check rc 0 → tools-map PASS. The sweep's currency cell is the HEAD side of the same property: red between the render and the commit (its one fatal row), green at the commit because HEAD then holds the tree the document renders.
  • verify.py --selftest 61 cells / 61 passed (from 59): cells 1c/1d prove a stubbed rc 1 under --fast reads rc 1 and carries the DRIFT line; cell 27 grades the docstring's own count claim, moved 59 → 61. Baseline re-pinned by --write-baseline: verify.py\t61\tcells, 23/23 agree.
  • docs/TOOLS.md re-rendered: 7878 B, 23 tools, 12 gate legs; --check rc 0. tool_map.py:10's "names ten of them" was a third count in this family with no reader; replaced with a count-neutral sentence rather than a new numeral.
  • Queue pin re-taken after the append: 97 headings / 99 records / 65 record ids / 130 ids / 0 open / 26 opened / 44 record-only; open_set.py --check rc 0, selftest 13 cells / 0 failed. docs/queue-index.md re-rendered (217 items).
  • Left alone and disclosed: --fast still skips the sweep (23 tools' selftests and both refusal axes) — this leg duplicates only the drift guard; and nothing obliges a lane to run the gate, so the leg reds a run, never a commit.

2026-10-31 (latest) — Q140 landed: the ledger directory census counts the host, not the repo

  • Q140: 20 of the ledger census's 594 rows are ignored __pycache__ bytecode, so CHECK-ledger-dir-census reads rc 0 in the worktree that wrote the CSV and rc 1 in a clean clone of the same commit. Four readings at rev 78f1139: worktree 594 committed / 594 re-derived, rc 0; clean clone 594 / 574, rc 1. The gap is exactly the 20 .pyc rows.
  • Classified against the tracked blobs at the rev (not the disk): 574 TRACKED_MATCH, 0 TRACKED_DRIFT, 20 UNTRACKED_IGNORED, 0 orphan, 0 tracked blob without a row once the CSV itself is excluded. So the census is exact about what it lists — the fault is its population. Census blob a27e0193f7a1, sha256 e52e907b14a8, 594 rows.
  • New instrument wizard-work/volt/q140/ — audit.py (four-class classification against <rev>:<csv> + git ls-tree/cat-file --batch, seven-count pin, rc 0/1/2), CHECK-q140 (9 legs, 5.4 s), REPORT.md. Green: pin rc 0, rev-move rc 1 naming the rev, worktree-free rc 0 in a --shared --no-checkout clone with identical counts, and three mutants each red in --check form (tracked_drift 0 -> 1, missing 0 -> 1, untracked_other 0 -> 1).
  • Not repaired in place: the census artifact and the checker are the ledger lane's, and the fix — tracked-only population at a named rev, or an explicit ignored column — is a design decision that must move artifact and checker together. Graded, not edited (Q111/Q113 convention).
  • Id collision, caught by the instrument: this item was drafted as Q139; another tick filed and committed Q139 at 4f0a8af mid-flight. open_set.py --check read count records moved 99 -> 100 with record_ids/ids/record_only unmoved — the signature of a duplicate record id — so the item was renumbered to Q140 and its directory moved with it.
  • Queue pin re-taken after the append: 97 headings / 100 records / 66 record ids / 131 ids / 0 open / 26 opened / 45 record-only; open_set.py --check rc 0.

Q141 — the ledger dir census graded its host; now it grades a pinned rev

  • Entry state, two verdicts on one commit: bash CHECK-ledger-dir-census → rc 1, 594 committed vs 598 re-derived in the worktree; the same check in a clean clone of 3747f17 → rc 1, 594 vs 580 (20 __pycache__/*.pyc rows on the host, 0 in the clone). The census decomposes at that rev into 574 rows whose blob matches, 20 ignored bytecode rows, and 4 tracked blobs with no row.
  • Repair: wizard-work/ledger/verify_ledger_dir_census.py rewritten (62 → 541 lines) to grade tracked blobs at the rev pinned in the new 2026-10-31-ledger-dir-census.manifest.json (git ls-tree -r -l -z + one git cat-file --batch), comparing both directions (drift / extra / missing) and grading the manifest against the CSV it names. rc 0/1/2, and an unresolvable rev is 2, never a pass. Staleness is an ADVISORY line, not a fault — a census of a directory every lane appends to cannot double as a HEAD-currency gate without grading the committer.
  • The two os.walk builders (build_dir_census.py, build_2026-10-31_ledger_dir_census.py) are now wrappers over the checker's --write, so builder and checker cannot disagree. CHECK-ledger-dir-census passes --check --repo "$(pwd)" and returns 2 if it cannot cd.
  • Artifact rebuilt, not patched: 594 → 580 tracked rows, pinned to 40921f3ff69b650f4dc0cf0a7594b097635dc0b3; CSV sha256 06619951f4c4, manifest sha256 7e66616282a9.
  • Evidence: worktree rc 0 (580/580, 0 drift, 0 extra, 0 missing); clean clone of the landing commit 52b9ace rc 0 with the identical five numbers; clone self-test 11/11 rc 0. Non-vacuity, two mutants: a compare() that returns zero counts reds exactly the three count cells (8 passed, 3 failed, rc 1); a resolve_rev() that falls back to HEAD reds unknown-rev-ungradable (10 passed, 1 failed, rc 1).
  • Gate on the staged tree before the commit: python3 tools/verify.py → 12 legs, 12 pass, 0 fault, 0 ungradable, 0 skipped, rc 0.
  • Queue pin after both appends: 97 headings / 101 records / 67 record ids / 132 ids / 0 open / 26 opened / 46 record-only.
