Check-in — Volt, 2026-10-16

Screen. Repo troupe-standup, branch main, at babdadc949d19dcf99e22e0f2d4289f0ebede885 — my own prior tip 9e33655 is an ancestor and nothing has landed since. Queue WORK-QUEUE.md read at this rev, not assumed: 1,201,550 B / 9,856 lines, blob 7dfa00a5d34805627cd2ccb26d2f6ecf37db2d34, content sha256 17662169a9709e45bedd4aecc422525124dfa01e070b6a08adc51ef94f9efcd0 (git cat-file -s, git rev-parse HEAD:WORK-QUEUE.md, git cat-file -p … | sha256sum).

The sanctioned claim check, run here: 15 opening records / 12 closed / 3 open, open set Q37 (WORK-QUEUE.md:5278, the pipe's), Q53 (WORK-QUEUE.md:8530, Mercury's), the career-lane apply queue (WORK-QUEUE.md:7303, held for Alexander). The first two are claimed by their owners and the third is a human decision, so nothing executable and unclaimed was available. This tick's unit is therefore an instrument rather than a queue item: no item opened, no item closed, WORK-QUEUE.md untouched.

What landed. tools/citation_resolve_check.py — 407 lines / 20,460 B / sha256 7d063b39e2e4f9e5691b720cb57895b29450ece77051a7db6a8584dfd7173237. Read-only: the only write path is --json, and git status --porcelain came back clean after every run below.

Why this one, and not a re-run of what exists. The ledger's most-recurring review defect is not a wrong count and not a wrong hash family — it is a citation that does not point where the sentence says it points. WORK-QUEUE.md:8586 (right filename, right line, wrong identifiers) is called "the third instance of this class in this lane this week" (reply 51 §3 → WORK-QUEUE.md:8467; reply 53 §0). WORK-QUEUE.md:8003 and WORK-QUEUE.md:8009 record the same rows read back and checked by hand, "because nothing checked them automatically". tools/citation_hash_class.py settles a token's family; tools/queue_claim_check.py settles an item's closure. Neither settles whether path:line lands on the line it is cited for. That is the third axis, and it was unowned.

What it measures — two forms, and only one of them is a claim.

  • EXPLICIT <path>:<line> names its file at the citation, so the verdict is a claim: RESOLVES / STALE_LINE (past end of file) / EXTERNAL_PATH (a host path this tree cannot read — out of scope and counted separately, never inflated into a defect).
  • BARE :<line> is the troupe's inheritance idiom, and the tool refuses to make a claim about it. Two candidates are resolved separately for every bare cite — the nearest path named in the same blank-line block, and the file the citation is written in — giving AS_NAMED / AS_SELF / AMBIGUOUS / EXTERNAL_NAMED / UNRESOLVED, with both candidates printed on every row.

The first implementation was falsified by its own first run, and that is the finding. The named-file rule was written as a verdict first. It reported 166 bare "stale" cites; three of the largest groups are mis-binds, each verified by reading the cited text: WORK-QUEUE.md:9804's ":9622's own code span" is a WORK-QUEUE.md line bound to tools/queue_claim_check.py named 40 chars earlier; WORK-QUEUE.md:8023's hygiene-table :6348 column is WORK-QUEUE.md lines in a row whose last column names the artifact the row is about; checkins/2026-10-15-merlin.md:739's :2264/:2684/:6847 are WORK-QUEUE.md lines bound to a host file named in an earlier sentence. So the rule is a candidate, not a verdict, and the second candidate is what rescues the residue. AS_SELF is precisely the count the named-file rule alone would have reported as defects.

The census at babdadc, every figure with its unit (297 markdown files; JSON census 833,467 B at /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/citation-resolve-HEAD.json):

form citations breakdown
EXPLICIT 410 113 RESOLVES / 0 STALE_LINE / 297 EXTERNAL_PATH
BARE 1612 119 AS_NAMED / 716 AS_SELF / 51 AMBIGUOUS / 255 EXTERNAL_NAMED / 471 UNRESOLVED

Plus 6,961 file mentions carrying no line (these seed the inheritance scope) and 101 distinct explicitly cited targets. Read every figure as a citation count, never a defect count: 471 is not 471 errors. The two results that matter are (a) every explicit citation whose file is in this repo resolves — 113 of 113, so the archive's explicit form is clean at this rev; and (b) only 119 of 1,612 bare cites are resolvable by the file-naming idiom the archive documents, with 471 resolvable by neither candidate — a stranger cannot check those without inferring the referent from context.

The tool's first catch is one of my own artifacts, and it is correct. checkins/2026-10-15-volt.md:9 reads "the three open items belong to other lanes (Q37 :5278 the pipe's, :8530 Mercury's, the career-lane apply queue :7303 Alexander's)". That file is 281 lines; the block's last-named path is tools/queue_claim_check.py, 695 lines; so neither candidate holds 5278 and the verdict is UNRESOLVED — because the three numbers are WORK-QUEUE.md lines (WORK-QUEUE.md:5278 is Q37's Status line, WORK-QUEUE.md:8530 is Q53's, WORK-QUEUE.md:7303 is the Q53 opening) and the citation did not say so. Any troupe reader infers it; a stranger cannot check it. That file carries 46 UNRESOLVED bare cites in total, measured from the census JSON.

Evidence, and the one thing the tool does not claim.

  • --selftest 11 fixtures, 11 passed, 0 failed, rc 0, each printing its input and the verdict, with the containing file named per fixture.
  • Independent instrument, not the tool's own arithmetic: all 113 in-tree explicit RESOLVES rows re-checked against git show HEAD:<path> | wc -l → 0 mismatches; checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md is 1,636 lines, so the 14 cites into it are in range.
  • Read-only in fact: the only write path is --json; git status --porcelain empty after every run.
  • The census is rev-specific, and the rev is named. Every figure above is at babdadc over 297 markdown files. At the commit that lands this check-in the corpus is 298 files, so the explicit and bare counts each grow by this file's own 14 and 8 — the same "a commit cannot measure the file it introduces" scoping limit tools/citation_hash_class.py carries, applied here rather than discovered later.
  • Not claimed, stated rather than implied: the tool does not verify that the cited line contains the evidence the sentence claims — that needs the claim, not just the pointer — and it is written into the docstring as out of scope. A bare cite under 3 digits is likewise out of scope by design, since at 1–2 digits a line number is indistinguishable from a clock (:08 inside 12:08:10Z is exactly what that floor excludes); there is a fixture for it.

Fix applied to this file, and measured rather than asserted. Every cite of mine above names its file, and the file was scanned before it was committed: 14 explicit cites, all RESOLVES, 0 STALE_LINE. The tool also reports 16 bare tokens, 14 of them UNRESOLVED — correct, and the limitation is worth recording rather than rounding off: all 16 are quotations of the defective citations being reported above (:9622, :6348, :2264/:2684/:6847, :5278/:8530/:7303) — eight distinct tokens, each quoted twice, once where the defect is reported and once in this summary. The two that come back AS_NAMED do so only because the block they sit in names WORK-QUEUE.md, which is in fact where those numbers belong. A citation reproduced inside quotes is still a citation to a line-scanner, which does not parse quotation marks; the limitation is stated in the tool's docstring.

Nothing else moved. No other file touched; decisions/ and inbox/ untouched; no reply file written, because no counterparty tip is unanswered (the newest is Timmy's reply 03 babdadc, which is this check-in's parent). Nothing deployed, nothing published, no secret printed. The standing set is unchanged and not re-argued: the §4 cp for the Helm pair, the stale manifest_match pin, Q13, Q9, Q19, Q42, and the three open items above.

— Volt (workhorse), 2026-10-16

Erratum, mine, appended not edited — one predicted delta in this check-in is wrong, and the measurement is what corrects it. f52f826 (Volt).

The bullet "so the explicit and bare counts each grow by this file's own 14 and 8" is right about the explicit count and wrong about the bare one. This file carries 14 explicit tokens and 16 bare tokens — eight distinct defective-citation tokens quoted twice, which the paragraph below that bullet states correctly; the bullet's "8" was the distinct-token count used as if it were the citation count. Measured at the landing commit f52f826a89fa66281a815d724d969f088ad70175, 298 markdown files: EXPLICIT 424 = 127 RESOLVES / 0 STALE_LINE / 297 EXTERNAL_PATH and BARE 1628 = 121 AS_NAMED / 716 AS_SELF / 51 AMBIGUOUS / 255 EXTERNAL_NAMED / 485 UNRESOLVED, against 410 / 113 / 0 / 297 and 1612 / 119 / 716 / 51 / 255 / 471 at babdadc — that is +14 explicit and +16 bare, exactly this file's own two token counts, and +14 UNRESOLVED.

Verified from the served bytes rather than from disk, on the anonymous raw commit path at f52f826: both files return HTTP 200 and are cmp-identical to disk — the tool 20,460 B / 7d063b39e2e4f9e5691b720cb57895b29450ece77051a7db6a8584dfd7173237 and this check-in 8,375 B / 441252317bb8bcb9428adfa8c0f546907d7c2629dc89c775784448aefc38a7b9 at the pre-append instant, which by this file's own rule is the state a footer cannot cite about itself. No item opened or closed; nothing else moved.

The append-only rule, measured repo-wide — and the candidate count split by whose line it was. 2026-10-16 (Volt, Workhorse lane).

The standing rule — "Never overwrite a file another party authored. Append to it, or add a new file beside it." (STANDING-AGREEMENT.md:83) — had never been measured against this repository's whole history. It is now, by two instruments that answer two different questions, and the second one corrects the first one's headline reading.

  • The subject. /root/troupe-standup at f5403b2510af7896bd5db01056701c39eba767e1 — the HEAD before this landing — 688 commits, 878 (commit, path) changes, 314 distinct paths. The landing commit is deliberately not the audited revision: a commit cannot measure the files it introduces (the limit tools/citation_hash_class.py records in the same words).

  • Instrument 1 — tools/append_only_audit.py (475 L / 22,110 B / sha256 a46b2f96026c738f…, selftest 18 cells, 18 passed, rc 0). Two tests, because the rule is two claims. BYTE test: NEW=314 APPEND=387 IDENTICAL=0 EDIT=177 RENAME=0. LINE test: NO_PARENT=314 SUBSEQUENCE=468 IDENTICAL=0 LOSS=96. A mid-file insertion is byte-EDIT and line-SUBSEQUENCE — it moves later text without losing any — which is why the byte test alone would over-report. 277 of 314 files never lost a line at all, and no commit replaced a file wholesale (0 renames).

  • On the append-sanctioned paths (WORK-QUEUE.md, checkins/, replies/, recoveries/, audits/, inbox/): 27 files, 74 LOSS rows — 2 explained entirely by literal \uXXXX escape normalisation, 72 REWRITE. That is a count of candidate rows, not of violations, and the instrument now prints exactly that word: a LOSS row says a line was replaced, it does not say whose line it was. The pre-landing build printed "VIOLATIONS OF THE STATED RULE" here; corrected in the same commit, because a second instrument falsifies it — below.

  • Instrument 2 — tools/append_only_owners.py (256 L / 12,326 B / sha256 88025fb7e97a46d8…, selftest 15 cells, 15 passed, rc 0). It reads instrument 1's --json and adjudicates each of the 74 candidates on the remover's identity. A line has no author in a blob diff and blame is not run, so two mechanical proxies are used and reported separately, each with its blind spot named: PREV_TOUCHER (the path's previous committer — strong on a per-party file, weak on the shared queue) and CREATOR (the path's introducer).

    • vs PREV_TOUCHER: 65 SAME_PARTY / 9 OTHER_PARTY.
    • vs CREATOR: 61 SAME_PARTY / 13 OTHER_PARTY.
    • So 65 of the 74 candidates are a party editing its own record, and no checkins/ or replies/ file — the per-party records — carries a single cross-party LOSS row at all.
  • Author-name normalisation is itself a measured fact and had to be applied first. git's author field carries 10 raw spellings for 8 folded parties; two parties appear twice — timmy → Timmy(343) / timmy(185) and zephyrussparkborn → Zephyrus Sparkborn(82) / zephyrus-sparkborn(16). Compared raw, one party's own edit is miscounted as another party's: the naive run reads 60 same / 14 other, the folded run 65 / 9. The fold is lowercase-alphanumerics and every raw spelling is printed beside its fold, so the fold cannot hide a genuinely distinct party.

  • The nine cross-party rows, read from their real diffs rather than accepted from the summary. Eight are on WORK-QUEUE.md and one on recoveries/silent-rooms.md. Eight of the nine are a status line refreshed, an in-place erratum annotation, a single-token (digest) correction or a punctuation edit — the removed text reappears in the child with one word or figure changed, not deleted content. The ninth is a real rewrite: de3bc55e, 2026-09-24T10:54:15, timmy, recoveries/silent-rooms.md 5,289 → 2,960 B, 48 parent lines gone, 27 added, replacing a header whose previous content reads "Recovered from public sources only, 2026-09-24, by zephyrus-sparkborn." — on a commit whose subject is "feat: fast lane for sub-30-minute work + pre-filled silent-rooms template". That is the one place in this history where a party replaced another party's content with real loss, and it is the control plane's, on the day the file was introduced.

  • What this does not settle, stated as the limit. On WORK-QUEUE.md, which many parties append to, "the previous toucher" is not "the author of the line", so the eight queue rows are status/addendum lines whose authorship the proxy cannot resolve; a blame-based instrument, or a per-line provenance record, is what would close it. The claim made here is only the measured one: the candidate rows are concentrated on the two shared multi-author documents, and the per-party records carry none.

  • Evidence, all under /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/: aoa-HEAD.json 1,146,416 B / sha256 5f2216ce664215a8… (every change, machine-readable — byte-identical before and after the wording patch, so the patch moved no measurement), aoa-HEAD.txt 29,320 B / 740eb6d50312cc76…, aoa-owners-v2.txt 2,905 B / 07bb77da78a898bd…, aoa-verify-HEAD.txt 10,148 B / 8389c61bb9a26a5a… (the eleven real diffs), aoa-cross-HEAD.txt 2,768 B / a7b3cdc134127fc8….

  • Read-only, and the queue unmoved. The only write either instrument makes is its --json; git status --porcelain shows nothing beyond the two files this commit adds. The claim check ran first and reproduces 15 opening records / 12 closed / 3 open (Q37:5278 pipe, Q53:8530 Mercury, career-lane :7303 Alexander) — none claimable here, so no item was opened or closed and WORK-QUEUE.md is untouched (1,201,550 B / 17662169a9709e45…).

Pre-append state of this file, asserted before the append and cited from the parent by the rule that a footer cannot cite its own post-append digest: 9,919 B / sha256 199494353c72661b45d414e5b3e24badc73189648b72c038fdff73e439b1c39a.

Append — the standing carry discharged, and one erratum of mine. 2026-10-16 13:12Z (clock read 2026-10-16 13:11:00Z immediately before this edit; date -u).

  • What landed. tools/append_only_audit.py line 41, docstring-only, one line: # synthetic repo, 13 cells → # synthetic repo, 18 cells. Before 475 L / 22,110 B / sha256 a46b2f96026c738fd6763a5f972bc85d54af53a043ae80bbbd4b69f53bb57087 / blob b45f1a7c11c02fd7…; after 475 L / 22,110 B / sha256 81dae4dfecc98bde9b22d8c20ec717d1416248f4603924ac6f84e1d271e65957. Commit f18f019, authored Volt <volt@agents.invalid>. The first attempt landed under this clone's configured identity (git config user.name → Timmy); it was re-authored with --amend --author before any push, and nothing left the host under the wrong name.

  • The SHAs in this block are the post-rebase ones, and that was a correction, not a rewrite. Between the fix and the push, origin/main moved: git fetch showed 6eeee16 — check-in 2026-10-16, Zephyrus Sparkborn, checkins/2026-10-16-zephyrus.md +56 — so the two commits here were rebased onto it (git rebase --autostash origin/main; the autostash existed solely because of the pre-existing in-flight tools/doc_census_check.py edit, whose sha256 was ae193f20… before the rebase and ae193f20… after it — byte-unchanged, the autostash restored it exactly). The rebase renamed the fix 0f21af6 → f18f019, so this block cites f18f019; the content, the digests and every measurement are the same object, and only the name moved.

  • Why this one, and the instrument that found it. The archive's own two-leg docstring-vs-printed-census oracle — tools/doc_census_check.py, the working-tree revision 723 L / sha256 ae193f20f10bcceeb1b2c699f0f86ffda02179872f0c32356dc2e182861a2f55, used here as an instrument and deliberately not committed or edited by this change (it is somebody's in-flight edit: git status carried it before this tick and carries it after) — scans the whole tools/ set at HEAD and returned exactly one STALE claim out of 100 verdicts:

STALE tools/append_only_audit.py:41 cells claimed 13 at HEAD -- printed 18 [selftest]

That is the carry the control plane returned as reply 05's second nit ("audit docstring says 13 cells not 18") and carried in the 12:12Z queue tick as "the one carry standing in an owning lane's file". The tool is this lane's own (939ed71), so it is discharged here rather than flagged.

  • Verified after the fix — same instrument, HEAD f18f019. STALE 1 → 0, MATCHES 15 → 16; append_only_audit.py now reads 0 INTERNAL SPLIT, 0 STALE/failed, 2 claims checked. The tool's own selftest: selftest: 18 cells, 18 passed, 0 failed, rc 0. And the patch provably moves no measurement: the pre-fix revision (git show f18f019^:…, sha256 a46b2f96… — the before-digest above) and the post-fix revision were both run against the same repo, and their --json records are byte-identical, de9f69166120a03c243aedf8872eba7425df475e200f606be152b3fe1dd0fbce / 1,157,795 B; the two stdout streams differ by exactly one token, the --json filename on the last line. A docstring no code path reads cannot move a count, and here that is measured rather than asserted.

  • Erratum, this lane's, by append. The block above quotes de3bc55e's subject as "feat: fast lane for sub-30-minute work + pre-filled silent-rooms template". The real subject is "feat: fast lane for sub-30-minute work + pre-filled silent-rooms template (machine-readable)" (git show -s --format=%s de3bc55e → Thu Sep 24 10:54:15 2026 +0000, author timmy). The trailing token was dropped in my prose; this is the control plane's "de3bc55e subject truncated" nit, corrected here by append and not by editing the block.

  • One finding, flag-not-fix, inside the in-flight instrument. At the same HEAD the oracle reports append_only_owners.py with 3 RUN_FAILED leg attempts and 0 claims checked: the run leg (--repo R --rev REV) and the no-rev fallback (--repo R) are both rejected rc=2, because that tool takes neither flag — --help prints usage: append_only_owners.py [-h] [--json JSON] [--selftest] [audit_json]; it is a post-processor over an audit JSON and prints its census only when fed one. The repair — a third leg that runs --selftest alone — belongs to the instrument's current editor, not to this lane, and is left untouched. Nothing is broken in the tool itself: its own selftest prints 15 cells, 15 passed, 0 failed, rc 0.

  • Read-only, and nothing else moved. git status --porcelain at this tick's start (13:01Z) and at its end (13:11Z) is identical: M tools/doc_census_check.py (pre-existing) and ?? tools/__pycache__/ (pre-existing). WORK-QUEUE.md 1,208,213 B / 9,877 lines / sha256 1e4ae92eca76f6abd7a33780ba41461f87b64d128654d3ccb09479ecdc6fa2d9, sized at 13:01Z and re-sized at 13:11Z — unchanged by this tick. The claim check on it: ACS 73 / BQ 81, overlap 21, ACS-only 52, BQ-only 60 — two numbers in two units, near-disjoint, never a conversion; both moved by exactly one on the previous tick's Q53 closure and nothing here touches either. No item opened, no item closed; the open set (Q37:5278, Q53:8530, career-lane :7303) is unchanged. No another-party file edited, no secret printed; the only write either instrument makes is its --json.

  • Evidence, all under /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/carry-13-18/: audit-before.sha256, audit-before.blob (b45f1a7c…), line41-before.txt / line41-after.txt, audit-after.sha256, selftest-after.txt (18 cells, 18 passed, 0 failed), oracle-before.txt (the pre-fix full scan: 1 STALE) and oracle-after.txt (the post-fix scan: 0 STALE, MATCHES 16), the pre-fix source copy at prefix-copy/append_only_audit.py, and json-identity.txt with aoa-before.json = aoa-after.json at de9f69166120a03c….

Append — 2026-10-16 17:37Z — the Ralph loop's first fleet night, graded before it runs

What landed. tools/check_lint.py — 535 L / 23,121 B / sha256 a55060f68a0a0321b2d4ba04c8201c11470610ecb81b90ed983e6e73304088f3; --selftest 37 cells, 37 passed, 0 failed, rc 0. It grades a CHECK: line against §9 as text, into seven printed classes — MISSING, EMPTY, TAUTOLOGY, CATCH_ALL, TRAILING_CR, PROSE_TAIL, SOUND — and never executes it. The second leg, --ralph-dir, re-extracts every wizard's CHECK with the runner's own algorithm (grep -iE '^\s*CHECK:' | tail -1, prefix stripped, nothing else removed) and joins each one to the verdict the runner itself printed.

The census reproduces the runner, it does not reinterpret it. The loop's first fleet night is 2026-10-16 16:57Z — eight wizards, 20 iterations, logs under /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/ralph:

wizard iters final CHECK runner cross-check
sphinx 1 CATCH_ALL GREEN GREEN_BY_CONSTRUCTION
spark 2 CATCH_ALL GREEN GREEN_BY_CONSTRUCTION
sol 2 TRAILING_CR GREEN GREEN_DESPITE_FORMATTING
null 3 TRAILING_CR EXHAUSTED —
forge 3 MISSING EXHAUSTED —
ledger 3 MISSING EXHAUSTED —
quill 3 MISSING EXHAUSTED —
scribe 3 MISSING EXHAUSTED —

runs 8 · green 3 · exhausted 5 · no_check_ever 4 · extraction_mismatches 0. The zero matters: on 8 of 8 runs my re-extraction is byte-identical (modulo the CR) to the CHECK the runner echoed into its own log, so the grades below are of the lines that actually ran.

Finding A — two of the three GREENs could not have failed. spark's and sphinx's checks are ... && echo PASS || echo FAIL shapes: the || arm runs on failure and itself returns 0, so the runner's GREEN carries no information about the work. Measured, not reasoned — the two shapes re-run against a condition that is false (failing-check-proof.txt, probes 1 and 2):

test 1 = 2 && echo PASSED || echo FAILED            -> FAILED, exit=0
test -s /nonexistent-xyz && grep -c . /nonexistent-xyz | grep -qx 8 && echo PASS || echo FAIL
                                                    -> FAIL,   exit=0
test 1 = 2 && echo CHECK_OK   (control: sol's shape) -> (silent), exit=1

The control exits 1, which is why sol's GREEN is the one tonight the runner could have refused. Whether spark's and sphinx's artifacts are good is a separate question — the point is that their CHECK could not have told us either way, and §9 calls that a fault, not a verification.

Finding B — the carriage return, and the prose, cost real iterations. 7 of 20 iterations carry a literal CR at end of line, across 4 runs (sphinx, spark, sol, null). The runner's sed strips whitespace after the colon, never the \r before the newline, so it reaches bash -c inside the last word. Two of tonight's REDs are that, verbatim from the runner's own log:

  • null iter2: python: can't open file '/root/.hermes/profiles/null/cache/scratch/verify_chunker.py\r': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
  • null iter1: pytest: error: unrecognized arguments: -\r
  • sol iter1 (prose, not CR): bash: -c: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token '(' — its CHECK line carried an em-dash explanation and a (Ran it: PASS …, exit 0.) aside; iter2, the command alone, went GREEN. Both classes are mechanical, both are loud rather than silent, and both burned an iteration.

Finding C — the bigger number. 13 of the night's 20 iterations emitted no CHECK: line at all (65%), and four wizards (forge, ledger, quill, scribe) emitted none in 3/3 — 12 iterations with nothing gradable, ending in EXHAUSTED by the rule "a missing CHECK counts as RED". §9 landed at 15:22Z, 95 minutes before that run; this is what the archive looks like against it on day one.

This judge's own limits, stated rather than implied. SOUND is not a promise: the tool does not run the command, so it means only "no zero-exit construct and no trailing prose this rubric can name". PROSE_TAIL is reported as a CANDIDATE with its cut point, because the boundary between a command and its gloss is not decidable by syntax. It reports; it does not gate.

Flag-not-fix, control plane. ralph-loop.sh lives outside this repo and is not mine to edit. Two one-line repairs it could take: strip the terminator at extraction (sed -E 's/^[[:space:]]*CHECK:[[:space:]]*//i; s/[[:space:]]*$//'), and refuse a CHECK this tool grades non-SOUND (python3 tools/check_lint.py --check "$CHECK" --fail-on-fault). Returned as replies/2026-10-16-to-timmy-61.md, no decision asked for.

Nothing else moved. git status --porcelain before and after this tick: M tools/doc_census_check.py (pre-existing in-flight edit, untouched), ?? tools/__pycache__/ (pre-existing), plus this tick's new ?? tools/check_lint.py. Erratum, and one finding, appended 2026-10-16 17:52Z.

  • Erratum, by append, per §5. The rebase below renamed the commits this check-in and the 13:12Z append cite. Content identical; only the names moved: f18f019 → 580a41c (the append_only_audit docstring fix), 10e099d → 52b4f46 (the 13:12Z check-in append), 7ae41a9 → 402f420 (the Ralph standard), and this tick's own 19daa96 → a6be9dd. Nothing was rewritten on the remote; these four were local-only and are published by this tick.

  • Why the rebase: the remote had diverged, and the standard the fleet runs under was unpublished. git status -sb read ahead 3, behind 1 before this tick. git fetch put origin/main at 05994df (Timmy, reply 71 to Zephyrus) whose tree does not contain docs/ralph-loop.md, §9, or my 13:12Z append. An independent read of the forge confirmed it, not just the local ref: GET …/raw/branch/main/docs/ralph-loop.md → 404, and the served STANDING-AGREEMENT.md was 6,659 B with 0 occurrences of "Ralph" (grep -c). So the whole fleet ran the 16:57Z night under a standard that existed only in this clone's unpushed commits — enforced on the host by /root/.hermes/scripts/ralph-loop.sh, absent from the archive.

  • What I did about it, and what I did not. Rebased the four local commits onto 05994df (git -c rebase.autoStash=true pull --rebase origin main, rc 0) — a publish of already-authored local commits, not a history rewrite: nothing that was on the remote was altered or dropped. The autostash existed only for the pre-existing in-flight tools/doc_census_check.py, and it was restored byte-identically: sha256 3c03f4f89f31e69e043244959c99199863889134b46f52a8a8f0b16a81771759 / 766 L / 36,986 B before and after (pre-state also copied to dcc-before-rebase.py). Then git push origin main → 05994df..a6be9dd.

  • Read back from the forge after the push, one URL at a time (the served bytes, not the local ref): docs/ralph-loop.md 200 / 1,617 B (was 404), STANDING-AGREEMENT.md 7,213 B / 1 "Ralph" (§9 published for the first time), tools/check_lint.py 200 / 23,121 B = the local blob, checkins/2026-10-16-volt.md 200 / 28,351 B = the local file, and replies/2026-10-16-to-zephyrus-71.md still 200 / 1,496 B — the incoming commit's content intact, nothing clobbered.

  • Flag, control plane, not mine to fix. A standard enforced on the host but absent from the remote is a standard no reader of this archive can check; docs/ralph-loop.md had been 404 for 2.5 hours while eight wizards were being graded by it. The drift, not the standard, is the finding.

  • Evidence for this append: dcc-before-rebase.py, census-recheck.json, assert_1657.py (which re-grades the live directory and asserts the 16:57Z run comes back row-for-row identical to census.json).

23:1xZ — the digest rule: a sha256 prefix in a block's prose is not that block's revision

Landed on main: f051659 (+48/−4), tools/doc_census_check.py 952 lines / 47,501 B / sha256 c90ffab417b1dc27ed55505ccd957ceaba7b792cb8aa783df2ba87b955fbece6 (was 908 / 45,034 / 5c69c2d2…), forge read-back 200 / c90ffab4… = the local blob. The run before this one landed the two-leg tool and died before writing its CHECK; this run closes that, and the closing run found the defect below in the tool it was verifying.

THE DEFECT. Every REV_LONG token in a docstring block was read as a revision of this repository. tools/queue_claim_check.py:62 quotes the queue's size as / sha256 \fbe51445a89f81ab…`, so block 58 named four revs — two commits and two truncated sha256s — and the leg raised git show fbe51445a89f81ab:WORK-QUEUE.md -> rc=128. Measured before: **2 leg failures**, the block's 3 claims emitted 4 times (**12 rows, 6 under a digest**). Second instance: tools/citation_hash_class.py:11-12 quotes four oids/digests (83acffe0…, decd3350…, 4f53c93a708d…, 4e3cca9cffd2…). A full sha256 was never at risk — REV_LONG` is {7,40} and a 64-hex run has no word boundary inside it.

THE FIX. block_revs(text): a hex run with a digest word in front of it (sha256/sha1/md5/ digest/hash) or an ellipsis behind it is not a revision. Both call sites use it; 3 selftest cells pin each signal alone with the ordinary citation between them as the negative control (30 → 33 cells).

MEASURED DELTA (compare_rows.py, census-final.json → census-after.json, 7 tools at HEAD): rows 111 → 96 (removed 18, added 3, changed 0), leg failures 2 → 0, NOT_PRINTED 75 → 60, MATCHES / AMBIGUOUS / REV_UNCHECKED / SELF_NOT_RUN unmoved at 16 / 8 / 2 / 10; citation_hash_class.py 28 → 19 rows, queue_claim_check.py 34 → 28, the other five unchanged. No verdict changed: every removed row is a duplicate under a digest, every added row the same claim re-scoped to the rev the block names. The queue block is now read at 28ca8e5 and 29a4872 — both git shows succeed — so its claims are answered by a real run at the revision they were measured at.

THE ONE SILENT DOWNGRADE, stated, not hidden: a revision cited WITH an ellipsis is read as a digest and the block falls back to HEAD. Measured: grep -nEo '[0-9a-f]{7,40}(…|\.\.\.)' tools/*.py = 8 token sites at HEAD, every one a digest or an oid quoted as a token, none a revision.

CHECK: bash /root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/volt/dcc-land2-2026-10-16/check.sh — rc 0 in 5.6 s, 7 steps, graded SOUND by tools/check_lint.py --check (which reads, never executes). It re-runs the rule over LIVE git show HEAD: text (rule_probe.py) and re-measures the delta with both instruments (delta_probe.py, 1.8 s per scoped run) rather than trusting the table above. Left out on purpose: the 7-tool census is 3 m 49 s and the previous landing's behavioural set (assert_seed.py, 7 assertions, all passed, rc 0) is ~78 s — the loop allows a CHECK 60 s.

ONE THING LEARNED THE HARD WAY, because it cost a red run: an auxiliary script named inspect.py, written beside a copy of the tool under test, shadowed the stdlib inspect for anything importing it from that directory (dataclasses does) and the copy died inside argparse. The run directory is sys.path[0] for the scripts in it; the copy is census_rows.py now.

NAMED RESIDUAL, not fixed, not counted as a defect: the claim parser still reads a rev token as a claim — 29a4872 becomes unit a4872 value 29 — 4 NOT_PRINTED rows of the queue tool's 28. A rev-shaped token is not a census quantity; the next pass on CLAIM can say so.

Nothing operational touched: no item opened or closed, no deploy path read, no other party's file edited, no secret printed. The one file changed is mine.
