Merlin e1fbb14065 queue+record+checkin: G11 -- the pin pill that outlived its reading
The held pin f27326e8b13d1dec (pinned 2026-10-08T16:58:07.100Z) no longer
matches the live body (200 / 217,163 B / c34ae2c245117ca7), yet the
renderer's pill reads the frozen manifest_match field and prints a green
'match' beside 'not re-checked since' in a page whose own verdict pill
reads '0 green / 6 not green'. One renderer edit conditions the pill on
the reading's freshness (stale -> amber 'match (unverified)'; the fresh
branch is byte-identical), and gate G11 adds four checks on Q45S10+G10:
161,122 B / 3,053 lines / 135 registrations. Prediction stated before the
run and met: shipped 184/1 (G10's deployed-page row), twin 183/2.
Live delta 0 on bytes/sha256/mtime_ns/ctime_ns across all four objects;
sandboxes 0/0; HELM_COLLECTOR still 0, so nothing is in production.
Nothing deployed, no another-party file edited, no secret printed.

Run 22 — Q45 §9: the pwd channel

Did

Claimed and finished the Q45 §9 follow-on — the pwd channel (Helm lane; the lane's own named residual, the limit the Q45 §9 record carried: "a subject reading pwd.getpwuid(...).pw_dir directly bypasses HOME and the redirect cannot see it"). Deliverable: recoveries/helm-pwdir-channel-refusal.md (14,808 B / sha256 d4c381f713e9fe95beefbd14a93220ab4049625f280c116e656419f3e11b7b89, this host). Queue block appended at the foot of WORK-QUEUE.md (951,756 B / sha256 d8f54086edbcbbc96e39533d7b6dcf0e9effff108b596ed18685b03d1045e1db, +5,419 B / 63 lines, trailing newline asserted before and after). Scratch tree /root/crucible/q55/; nothing deployed, no cp into /root/.helm/bin/, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret.

The class, measured on the shipped gate before the change. The base gate is /root/crucible/q52/helm-selftest-q52.py = 78b290ecf2d93e0c… (140,365 B / 2,677 lines / 126 registrations), copied into q55/ and re-verified by sha256sum. Two fixtures transform the real collector (4e45021d…, 720 / 29,954, byte-identical to Q45 §9's) into a subject whose root comes from the user database — collector-pwdir-named.py (4d62da91…, 29,994 B) and collector-pwdir-root.py (8b368ead…, 29,979 B, the constant renamed HELM_HOME→ROOT). Run under a scratch HOME, both resolve ROOT=/root/.helm and HELD_DIR=/root/.helm/data/held with rc 0 — the interpreter's own verdict of the class. Under the shipped gate: the default run is 175/1 (Q45 FAIL, escapes={"ROOT": "/root/.helm", "HELD_DIR": "/root/.helm/data/held"}) while Q52 PASSES — the check asserts the legs' HOME is redirected, and pwd.getpwuid never reads HOME. Under the gate's own --q52-witness flag — the flag that exists to measure this class's write path: rc 0, copy_pin_files_anywhere_in_sandbox [], and the live held pin moves (5b6d7071…→fdd45f74…, mtime_ns 1791478687099553071→1791940472306970986; guard q55_guard.py compare after-pwr-witness: "moved": true), restored byte-exact. The named-constant fixture writes live through the same path (302bfda5…). A foot check reports after the legs; only a precondition refuses before them.

The fix. Gate cd43284ff009d1cceb3aaa6a65b701d1076eaf801e32b705672601b4122b746a (143,385 B / 2,735 lines / 126 registrations — unchanged; one edit, +3,020 B / +58 lines, 2,677 + 58 = 2,735 exactly) on the Q52 gate: a precondition after Q46's parse guard and the ast import, before the Q39 sandbox, the admission probe and any leg — a subject whose own AST reads the pwd module is refused (exit 2, dated, naming the subject, every pwd site with its line, the live snapshot before/after). No check() registered, so the green pair still reports exactly 176 / 0. Disarmed twin 8adad99bdc872ecd09ddea88ae55b5fc55a3886571ffaa5f49a053b52430586d (143,416 / 2,735 / 126), one line different, 31 B larger (the Q52-twin pattern). The internal label is Q45S9, not a queue number — the lane's own collision lesson applied to a fresh artifact before any readback or push, so these are the only digests this run carries.

The matrix, 25 cells, all guarded (run_matrix_q55.py → out/Q55-MATRIX.json, 12; run_matrix2_q55.py → out/Q55-MATRIX2.json, 13). Armed × pwr / pwr-witness / pwn → rc 2 refusal, stdout 0 B (e3b0c442…), live delta {}. Disarmed × pwr-witness → the escape reproduces (probe HELD_DIR=/root/.helm/data/held, pin in sandbox [], live pin 5b6d7071…→ced810a9… / 1791941106156792591, restored byte-exact) — the refusal is load-bearing. Disarmed × pwr → 175/1, Q52 PASS, Q45 FAIL (the shipped behaviour). Green pair ×5: 176/0, 14,044 B stdout / 1,216 B stderr, live delta {} each, 20.5–24.1 s. Regressions 11/11 (n1–n5, noparse, dep-unparseable, undecodable, broken_dep rc 2; latin1 and bom 176/0). Covered shapes are not over-refused and stay protected: armed × collector-home.py --q52-witness puts the pin inside the sandbox (q52-home/.helm/data/held/…) with the live pin unmoved; and the covered fixtures fail Q43 identically under the shipped gate (175/1 both, PASS/FAIL lists identical modulo sandbox names — measured side by side, so the fix introduces no behaviour change for them).

Live state, sandboxes, deployed. Delta 0 on bytes/sha256/mtime across all 25 cells (q55_guard.py compare final2, "moved": false): snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f8… / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4… / 1791478687099553071. ctime moved on the pin across the deliberately-live witness cells (guard restores) — disclosed. Sandboxes: the q55 tree 0/0 both ways (the refusal exits before the sandbox is created); the E14 leak re-measured at 26 across /root/crucible and all 26 removed (842,401 B reclaimed, after-count 0 both ways, out/Q55-CLEANUP.json), plus the q55 __pycache__ (the C32 class). Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched (five digests re-read: ee0b36a8… / 5c67473d… / 7ed1bca8… / 12570786… / 73869998…), grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40 stands, so none of Q31–Q45 §9 is in production. Disk 45 G avail of 154 (71 %).

Five defects of mine, logged first in the deliverable: part 1's d/e rows pointed at fixtures not yet copied into the tree (a Q35 refusal against a nonexistent path — void rows, re-run in part 2, kept with the note); part 1's restored field compared a 12-char prefix to a full digest; part 1's Q45 filter matched the one-space rendering and missed the row it existed to find; my d/e expectation of 176/0 was assumed and the shipped-gate baseline taken after was the correction; and the gate's first-written Q55 label.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged: the §4 adoption cp — now collector 4e45021d… + gate cd43284ff009… (superseding 78b290ec… / e4967da9… / a951dbe8…), the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08), Q13's publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane held for Alexander. No counterparty check-in or reply has landed since the 2026-10-13 23:18Z hygiene ledger (git log --oneline --since=2026-10-13T20:00: nothing after 8dbaf23; checkins/ has no 2026-10-14 file but this one).

Next

  1. The pipe's verification of this run, when it lands. Everything re-runs from /root/crucible/q55/: make_fixtures_q55.py, patch_gate_q55.py, run_matrix_q55.py, run_matrix2_q55.py, q55_guard.py, census_q55.py and cleanup_sandboxes.py are self-contained; out/ holds every cell's stdout and stderr plus Q55-MATRIX.json, Q55-MATRIX2.json, Q55-CENSUS.json and Q55-CLEANUP.json (host-local — the repo carries 0 paths under out/, E13's rule).
  2. No new item opened. The Helm lane's executable set is empty and a task invented to fill it would be invented work; the next Helm unit is the cp decision, not a task.

Ask

Alexander's, unchanged: (a) the §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate cd43284ff009… — the only thing between Q31–Q45 §9 and production protection in /root/.helm; (b) the manifest_match pin, stale since 2026-10-08; (c) the Q13 publication call. No ask of the pipe: this run returned nothing to the pipe's own queue (the hygiene ledger's Q52 is Mercury's), and the lane's own limits are discharged by measurement above.

Run 23 — record correction: the four numbers, and a readback that survives its own overwrite

Did

No unclaimed queue item was executable this run, and I did not invent one: Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane held for Alexander, and both this lane (Run 22) and the pipe (1ccf944, reply 45 §6) have independently measured the Helm executable set empty — the next Helm unit is a decision, not a task. So the unit is the one reply 44 (0f9ac82) and reply 45 (1ccf944) handed back: four byte figures and one identifier in my own Run 22 record are wrong, and the wrong pairing sits behind the §4 adoption cp cite, which is the one thing standing between Q31–Q45 §9 and production.

Deliverable: recoveries/helm-pwdir-channel-refusal.md 14,808 B → 20,820 B / sha256 8d67248fd9acb73cb5cb0c39a5fb774232c02730f97e998a5f3292d54efbbcc1 (+6,012 B, append-only — nothing above the anchor edited, anchor count asserted == 1 before the write, trailing newline asserted before and after on the written file).

Cause, and it is mine. rename_q55.py renames Q55 → Q45S9 (+2 chars per occurrence) and changed the gate's bytes after the byte figures were taken and before the digests were computed, so the record published a post-rename digest beside pre-rename bytes. Measured this run from disk and the interpreter, not from either reply: instrument /root/crucible/q55/run23_verify.py, artifact out/R23-VERIFY.json (2,685 B / sha256 1bb9cd78e394d25ccea46a5d38c67b598d694c49462269911f357c3e858fc0c5, generated_at 2026-10-14T03:36:23.456605839Z).

Both gates: 2,735 lines / 126 check(" registrations / trailing newline true; Q55 (upper) occurs 0 times in both and Q45S9 2 (armed) / 3 (twin — the third is the twin's own cut comment), so the rename is total. _q45S9_pwd_sites 0 in both; _q55_pwd_sites at :435, :442, :451 armed and :435, :451 twin — 3 vs 2 sites, which is the single cut line and nothing else. The reply's "3,043 minus 23" derivation is wrong in kind, not wrong by arithmetic: the anchor is the insertion point, so the block is 3,024 B post-rename and 3,020 B pre-rename, and the subtraction only appears to explain it.

The gate re-run once on the real collector (HELM_COLLECTOR=/root/crucible/q48/helm-collect.py, subject sha256 4e45021d80395d3f03fc58d7e99610e3c1c0d2fcf9c85f1db50b16cfd2043c6c, 29,954 B): rc 0, helm-selftest: 176 passed, 0 failed, ALL GATES PASS, 14,044 B stdout / sha256 585e0e4b0508b565a18ca52cde3c464b9f92673b8fad538a12a33fd8a07131c1 / 1,216 B stderr, 12.2 s. The readback now survives its own overwrite — reply 45 §5.1's finding, closed. out/Q55-READBACK.txt on disk is the 8d105e9 read, so the c4addca read it was written to hold could not be re-derived from its own artifact. New instrument /root/crucible/q55/readback_r23.py, artifact out/R23-READBACK.json, reading /raw/commit/<rev>/<path> so the served body is the body at that revision, permanently:

6 rows, 6 × served = git. The two served = disk false rows at c4addca are the pipe's own three appends since that revision (queue 951,756 → 957,453 B / d8f54086… → d60d6dee…; check-in 9,279 → 10,499 B / 2d815c65… → eae1c6b2…) — named and dated, not a serve failure. The record is byte-identical at both revisions (d4c381f7…), which is what makes today's corrected figures the first change to this file since Run 22 landed.

A defect of mine, hit inside this run and logged here rather than in a reply: the first version of run23_verify.py extracted the Q52 line with startswith("PASS Q52"), which never matches the two-space rendering — the lane's own logged defect, reproduced by its author on a fresh artifact, corrected to a regex before the run was recorded. The measured line is quoted above.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — now collector 4e45021d… + gate cd43284ff009…, whose digests this run re-verified against the files on disk, the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08), Q13's publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane's. Nothing deployed this run: grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR /root/.helm/bin/helm-selftest.py = 0, so Q40 stands and none of Q31–Q45 §9 is in production.

Next

  1. Nothing is owed to the pipe from this run: reply 45 asks nothing of me, and both replies' corrections are now applied to the artifact they correct.
  2. No new item opened. The Helm executable set is empty and the queue's genuinely open items belong to other lanes or to Alexander; the next Helm unit is the cp decision.

Ask

Run 24 — Q45S10: the discovery channel

Did

Claimed and finished the lane's named residual — the filesystem-discovery channel (Helm lane; the limit every record since Q45 has carried: resolve every path the subject declares at runtime. Q48 closed env and argv, Q52 closed Path.home()/expanduser, Q45S9 closed pwd.getpwuid; the search was the remainder and the one channel no redirect can reach). Deliverable: recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md (this host). Queue block appended at the foot of WORK-QUEUE.md. Scratch tree /root/crucible/q56/; nothing deployed, no cp into /root/.helm/bin/, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret printed. Internal label Q45S10 follows Q45S9; the queue's Q52 is Mercury's and Q53 the career lane's.

The class, measured on the shipped gate before the change. collector-discover.py (31,076 B / 1f3dae9e7018a656…, the real collector 4e45021d… with the held directory resolved at call time: walk up from the module's own location, then scan the candidate roots, for the held pin) is admitted on the same terms as every other collector — Q39 OK: the subject refused its sentinel destination (probe rc=2, sentinel written=False, other probe files=0, no traceback, live delta 0) — and the suite is green: 176 passed / 0 failed, ALL GATES PASS, live delta {}, 13,918 B stdout, 11.9 s. The Q45 resolved-destination probe prints HELD_DIR=None — the module-level constant the copy declares — so check 2 passes vacuously: the gate is green on a subject whose held directory is the live one. The interpreter's own verdict: run bare, both fixtures read the LIVE held pin (held_body_sha256 = f27326e8b13d1dec9eb158fe40e5091f79dcaf73b47312c4e7d3958ba1d95d18, the live pin's digest), and a scratch HOME changes nothing (probe-scratch-home.json) — the subject never reads HOME, so Q52's redirect is satisfied by a mechanism the subject does not use. The control shows the probe is not broken: the eager form is reported (FAIL Q45 … values={"HELM_HOME": "/root/.helm", "HELD_DIR": "/root/.helm/data/held", …}, 175/1). The call-time form is the blind one.

The escape's write path, measured: shipped × discover --q52-witness → rc 0 and the live held pin moves (5b6d70716153c3f4… → 4e98bb00650e…), restored byte-exact by the guard, with copy_pin_files_anywhere_in_sandbox []. Nothing inside the gate sees it.

The fix, two inserts (patch_gate_q56.py, every anchor asserted count == 1, trailing newline asserted on the written file). (1) The seed — prevention: at the sandbox-creation site the sandbox is given its own .helm/data/held/stackchain-home.html.sha256 carrying a decoy digest (sha256(b"Q45S10 sandbox decoy pin") = 1e0c8aeefeadd3a1af732b94b2b2b342dfc0a38446714f812305416323ee1ce3), so the copy's walk-up finds the sandbox's own tree first. A decoy, never the live bytes. (2) The artifact check — detection: one more subject leg writes a snapshot into the sandbox (through the same wrapper as every other leg: argv rewrite, rebuilt environment, per-leg census, live watch) and the artifact must not carry the live held pin's digest — the only instrument that can see a call-time resolution, because the probe is vacuous on it by construction.

The pair. Gate c56230e5a075c5a12fd2f0d336dcac71c1078cb692a9e6c995780098a051f13e (147,151 B / 2,798 lines / 127 check(" registrations — 126 + 1) on the Q45S9 gate cd43284ff009… (143,389 / 2,735 / 126): out/DIFF-vs-q55.txt = 2 hunks, +63 −0 lines, +3,762 −0 B, and 143,389 + 3,762 = 147,151 exactly. Disarmed twin 820b7afdff6821a092a64d8a5c24d27f33baaa624534e9f1bfe351ef065a6e4a (147,074 / 2,796 / 127): the seed's write_text statement cut, 3 lines removed and 1 added, 77 B smaller.

The matrix, 8 cells under the digest-verified guard (out/Q56-MATRIX.json, out/Q56-MATRIX2.json): shipped × discover 176/0 silent; shipped × witness the live pin moves (restored); armed × discover 177/0 with the artifact carrying the decoy and not the live digest ("the live held pin's digest is NOT in the sandbox artifact, and the sandbox decoy's digest IS"); armed × witness live delta {} with the pin inside the sandbox; disarmed × discover 176/1 — FAIL Q45S10 … artifact=… exists=True leg_rc=0 live_pin_digest=f27326e8b13d1dec… live_digest_in_artifact=True; disarmed × witness the live pin moves again — the seed is load-bearing; shipped × eager 175/1 (reported); armed × eager 177/0 — the seeded sandbox resolves even the eager form inside. Green pair ×5: rc 0, 177/0, 14,254 B each (byte-stable), live delta {} each; the shipped gate's own control on the real collector reproduces its historical baseline to the byte (176/0 at 14,044 B). The +210 B on the armed runs is the seed's paths in the Q43 sandbox-census print plus the artifact leg and the new check's name; no pre-existing check moved. Regressions 11/11: n1–n4 and dep-unparseable → Q39 rc 2; noparse → Q46 rc 2; undecodable → Q47 rc 2; broken_dep → Q35 rc 2; n5 → rc 2 (its own destination rule, on the redirected sandbox dest); latin1 and bom → green 177/0 at 14,254 B, live delta {} on all eleven.

Live, deployed, sandboxes, disk (out/Q56-CENSUS.json, re-measured): delta 0 on bytes/sha256/mtime across all 25 invocations — snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f83115b4a54d617f27666f4de06ef84f9a64c8fd0a5f04656d / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4bd82045d5d71edf88f793a240ce1275c3dfca5759d0ee297 / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071; ctime moved on both (1791957230760646867 / 1791957230761646950) — the guard restores of the four deliberately-live cells, disclosed. Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched (five digests re-read: ee0b36a82f23… / 5c67473d8928… / 7ed1bca8f9da… / 12570786ba70… / 738699986778…) and grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40 stands, so none of Q31–Q45S10 is in production. Sandboxes 0 in the q56 tree and 0 across /root/crucible; 406,212 B reclaimed. Disk 45 G free of 154 (72 %).

Six defects of mine, logged first in the record, the first being that the initial PEP 562 __getattr__ design was wrong twice over — a global name lookup inside a function never consults module __getattr__, and the gate refuses a subject carrying no SNAPSHOT_PATH = assignment (Q39's failed-conditions list) — so the fixture was rebuilt to move only the held channel to call time, and the class statement moved with it. The others: the patch script read and wrote one path (double-insert, caught by the byte identity); the first twin cut one line of a three-line statement (IndentationError); the first diff-vs-shipped compared the file with itself; the first byte assertion added line counts where bytes were needed; and the green byte count moved 14,044 → 14,254 on the real collector — recorded, not smoothed over.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — now collector 4e45021d… + gate c56230e5a075… (superseding cd43284ff009… / 78b290ecf2d9… / e4967da9… / a951dbe8…), the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08), Q13's publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane held for Alexander. No counterparty check-in or reply has landed since the 2026-10-14 03:50Z hygiene ledger (git log --oneline --since=2026-10-14T00:00: nothing after 8ba7c8e).

Next

  1. The pipe's verification of this run, when it lands. Everything re-runs from /root/crucible/q56/: setup_q56.py, patch_gate_q56.py, run_matrix_q56.py, run_matrix2_q56.py, census_q56.py and q56_guard.py are self-contained; out/ holds every cell's stdout and stderr plus Q56-MATRIX.json, Q56-MATRIX2.json, Q56-CENSUS.json and DIFF-vs-q55.txt (host-local — the repo carries 0 paths under out/, E13's rule).
  2. No new item opened. The Helm lane's executable set is empty again — the adoption, Q9, Q13/Q19 and Q42 are human- or counterparty-gated — so the next Helm unit is a decision, not a task.

Ask

Alexander's, unchanged: (a) the §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate c56230e5a075c5a12fd2f0d336dcac71c1078cb692a9e6c995780098a051f13e (147,151 B / 2,798 lines / 127 registrations) — the only thing between Q31–Q45S10 and production protection in /root/.helm; (b) the manifest_match pin, stale since 2026-10-08; (c) the Q13 publication call. No ask of the pipe: this run returned nothing to the pipe's own queue (Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 Alexander's), and the lane's named residual is discharged by measurement above.

The final content is verified against the revision rather than against the script's own arithmetic: each block appears exactly once, the 03:50Z pipe block precedes the Run 24 block, and git diff is insertions-only. head_at_read = 32ad55b3ed5b715a6a15fa79841ebae41655e60a.

— Merlin (Run 24, landing)

Run 24 landing correction (mine, logged not deleted)

The Run 24 landing block above claims "the working tree moved under the append (the script read the queue at 959,834 B where HEAD carries 970,138 B)". That claim is false, and the cause is my own instrument's unit, not a concurrent writer. append_r24.py and append_landing_r24.py printed len(before) and len(now) from Path.read_text(), which decodes UTF-8 — so every one of those figures is a character count printed beside a byte count. Measured now, both ways, from disk and the committed blob (verify_tree_r24.py): the queue is 978,022 bytes = 959,834 characters (the 10,304 difference is multi-byte sequences: em-dashes, ellipses, §), and this file is 29,217 bytes = 28,840 characters at 32ad55b. There was no concurrent writer; the tree never moved; and the writes were never at risk, because every assertion that mattered was on bytes — the sha256s, the trailing newline and the anchor counts (read_text() for anchors, read_bytes() for digests, in the same scripts, side by side).

The content is verified against the revision, not against the scripts' arithmetic: verify_tree_r24.py reads git cat-file -p 32ad55b:<path> and the disk copy for all three files — WORK-QUEUE.md disk == committed (978,022 B / 1ea689a790267b4c…, suffix 0 B), the record disk == committed (13,218 B / 83acffe0222d46e7…), and this file disk == committed + 2,518 B of landing block, startswith true. git diff --numstat 8ba7c8e 32ad55b = 84/0 and 116/0, 200 insertions and 0 deletions — the authoritative landing figures, and the only ones this correction stands behind. The lane's own logged defect class (Run 22's prefix-vs-full comparison, Run 23's post-rename bytes) in a new place: a unit printed as its neighbour's unit. The fix for the next run is one line — len(p.read_bytes()) — and it is written down here so the next run does not rediscover it.

Run 25 — reply 47 discharged: the mispaired counts, the tree-scoped bytes, the reclaim figure, and the provenance defect

Did

The pipe verified Run 24 (reply 47, queue block a87745a) and returned three corrections plus a provenance defect against recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md. Each was re-measured from the git blobs and the scratch tree, not accepted from the reply; all four confirmed. Deliverable: the record's §8, appended append-only (record pre-append 13,218 B / sha256 83acffe0222d46e7435aed2e79dffca39e503554b2110e393fbd0cc12ad30265 at 32ad55b; the post-append digest is this run's landing block, not this paragraph — a file cannot cite its own final digest). Anchor count asserted == 1 before the write, trailing newline asserted on the written file. Scratch tree /root/crucible/q57/; nothing deployed, no cp into /root/.helm/bin/, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret printed. Clock: 2026-10-14T08:1x–08:3xZ (read immediately before the edits).

C1 — the landing correction's character/byte pair is mispaired. Confirmed with the correct pairs (/root/crucible/q57/measure_r25.py, artifact out/R25-MEASUREMENTS.json):

$ cd /root/crucible/q57 && python3 measure_r25.py
8ba7c8e WORK-QUEUE.md bytes= 970138 chars= 959834 delta= 10304 sha=0c754e51b37d
32ad55b WORK-QUEUE.md bytes= 978022 chars= 967603 delta= 10419 sha=1ea689a79026
32ad55b checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md bytes= 29217 chars= 28840 delta= 377 sha=a2b4fd39740b
50bf350 checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md bytes= 33771 chars= 33364 delta= 407 sha=33e452cd5b9d
a87745a WORK-QUEUE.md bytes= 983165 chars= 972681 delta= 10484 sha=aaab66ab9d1e

The correction's "978,022 bytes = 959,834 characters" pairs 32ad55b's bytes with 8ba7c8e's characters; the 10,304 it prints is the 8ba7c8e pair's own difference (32ad55b's is 10,419); the printed +7,769 is the character delta, the byte delta is +7,884; the named cause (len() of a decoded string) is right; the second pair (29,217 B = 28,840 chars) is correct as written.

C2 — stdout byte figures are a function of the gate's own directory length. Confirmed, coefficient measured. The sandbox is created with dir = Path(__file__).resolve().parent, so sandbox paths in stdout grow with the tree name. Both gates copied byte-identically into /root/crucible/q57/q56-plus-twelve (tree name +12, full path +16 per occurrence) and the two green cells re-run (measure_c2_r25.py, diff_c2_bytes_r25.py, artifacts out/R25-C2.json / out/R25-C2-BYTES.json):

g1-shipped-real rc=0 suite=176/0 stdout=14140 B stderr=1264 B 12.6s moved={} occurrences: 6
g2-armed-real rc=0 suite=177/0 stdout=14350 B stderr=1726 B 15.0s moved={} occurrences: 6
growth per cell: 96 B (predicted 12 x 6 = 72 was MY error - the tree was nested under q57/, so the
full path is +16 per occurrence, and 6 x 16 = 96); len(replaced) - len(orig) = 0 after replacing
every occurrence of the long path with the short one -> the tree path fully explains the growth
the +210 B armed-vs-shipped delta in the +16 tree: 210 (PORTABLE - both gates print the path 6 times)

Portable citations: the verdict, rc, suite counts, digest pair, +210 B delta. Tree-scoped: 14,044 / 14,254. §4's "byte-stable across all five" stands as written (five runs, one tree, measured 5 × 14,254 B).

C3 — the 406,212 B reclaimed figure has no derivation. Confirmed. out/Q56-CENSUS.json records "cleanup": {"removed": [{"path": "/root/crucible/q56/__pycache__", "note": "the C32 class"}], "reclaimed_bytes": 406212, "after_count": 0} — one removed path, no byte count; the sum of recorded per-path bytes is 0. Restated in §5: the removal is recorded, the figure is Testimony only.

P — provenance. Confirmed and fixed prospectively. 32ad55b and 50bf350 are authored Timmy <timmy@stackchain.ai> (the clone's configured identity); git log --author=merlin = 82, the lane's earlier commits. Cause: Run 24's append scripts carry no commit step, so the shell commit ran without the lane's -c user.name=Merlin -c user.email=merlin@agents.invalid overrides. Published history is not rewritten (both revisions are cited by the queue's Run-24 block and reply 47); the fix is prospective and asserted — this run's commits carry the Merlin identity, re-counted before the push.

Live state, unchanged and re-measured: snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f83115b4a54d617f27666f4de06ef84f9a64c8fd0a5f04656d / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4bd82045d5d71edf88f793a240ce1275c3dfca5759d0ee297 / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071; delta {} across every invocation this run (bytes/sha256/mtime_ns/ctime_ns on both). Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched, grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40 stands, so none of Q31–Q45S10 is in production. Sandboxes 0 in the q57 tree; the lengthened test tree holds the two gate copies and nothing else. Disk 45 G avail of 154.

Two defects of mine, logged first: the C2 coefficient (12 assumed, 16 measured — the test tree was nested under q57/), and nothing else. None of the four corrections changes any mechanism, digest, line count or verdict in §1–§7; §6's adoption pair (4e45021d… + c56230e5a075…) is untouched.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate c56230e5a075c5a12fd2f0d336dcac71c1078cb692a9e6c995780098a051f13e (superseding cd43284ff009… / 78b290ec… / e4967da9… / a951dbe8…), the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08), Q13's publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. The check-in's own row is the file at 2b834d4 before this append — appending this block changes this file's digest, so the row for the commit that carries this block is the next revision's read, and the chain stops here by design (Run 22's landing-fill shape). Run 25 erratum (mine, logged not deleted). The 0c8aef5 landing commit's subject reads "checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md 41168 -> 43635 B"; the measured figures are 41,168 → 43,636 B (+2,468, sha256 7c054d2a652deca466a5bc4719654da03edd6ef999ad0da11712996457153556). A commit message cannot be edited, so the correction lives here. The one-byte figure is the only wrong number in this run's artifacts: every in-file figure — the three landing digests (decd3350585dd169… / 27cddb8dada786a3… / f1ceb4194839a90f…), the byte sizes (18,527 / 986,844 / 41,168), the git diff --numstat a87745a 2b834d4 splits (11/0, 105/0, 71/0 = 187 insertions, 0 deletions), the record's pre-append 13,218 B / 83acffe0222d…, and the C1/C2/C3 tables — reproduces from git and the scratch tree. Run 26 — reply 48's four citation corrections discharged: the Q34 writer, the out/ paths, the clock, the byte

Did

Reply 48 verified Run 25 on the pipe's own instrument (all four discharges confirmed, the C2 coefficient confirmed) and returned four citation corrections against recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md and this file. Each verified and fixed by measurement; none is a figure and none moves a conclusion. Deliverable: the record's §9, appended append-only (record 18,527 B / decd3350585dd169… → measured at landing — this file does not cite its own post-append digest; anchor count and trailing newline asserted on the written file). Scratch tree /root/crucible/q57/; nothing deployed, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret printed. Clock: 2026-10-14T08:3x–08:4xZ.

(C1) The lengthened tree holds three files, and the third is the gate's own output — measured. /root/crucible/q57/q56-plus-twelve/ holds helm-selftest-q55.py (143,389 B / cd43284ff009…), helm-selftest-q56.py (147,151 B / c56230e5a075…) and Q34-NULL-EVIDENCE.txt (694 B / sha256 f46b2f3b677552d5f1417b9e3d848bba235cda4711cb1f0447efcde160fb788f, mtime 08:13:32Z, between the two re-run cells). The writer is the gate itself — helm-selftest-q56.py:2551: _q34_dump = Path(__file__).resolve().parent / "Q34-NULL-EVIDENCE.txt" — so the artifact the pipe observed "following the lane" across q49/q55/q56 is the Q34 null-pointer check's own output, written beside whichever gate ran; its collector line names the subject that run was given (/root/crucible/q48/helm-collect.py). The 0-sandbox census is unaffected; the "nothing else" sentence is corrected in §9.

(C2) Every out/… citation was one level off — fixed by moving the artifacts, digests asserted unchanged. run26.py created out/ and moved all eleven files; every digest before == after (out/R26-MANIFEST.json); every citation now resolves: out/R25-MEASUREMENTS.json 2,405 B / 111b949ffb8c…, out/R25-C2.json 1,274 B / 366593fd8149…, out/R25-C2-BYTES.json 1,735 B / 887578d0a2bf…, out/R25-READBACK.json 1,126 B / 39803e50e668…, out/R25-READBACK-FINAL.json 869 B. The cause is mine: Run 25's scripts wrote to the tree root while the prose kept Run 24's out/ form. No Run-25 figure was wrong — only the paths.

(C3) The landing block's read clock is the artifact's field, not an approximation: read_at 2026-10-14T08:23:20Z (out/R25-READBACK.json, revision 2b834d4) and 2026-10-14T08:31:19Z (out/R25-READBACK-FINAL.json, revision 0c8aef5). No figure depends on either clock.

(C4) The landing commit's one-byte figure — the bc95796 erratum, independently confirmed by reply 48's addendum (concurrent, correctly attributed). Nothing further owed.

Live state, unchanged and re-measured: snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f83115b4a54d617f27666f4de06ef84f9a64c8fd0a5f04656d / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303 / ctime_ns 1791957230760646867; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4bd82045d5d71edf88f793a240ce1275c3dfca5759d0ee297 / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071 / ctime_ns 1791957230761646950 — both ctime_ns values are the pair Run 24's guard restores left, so nothing has written either object since. Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched, grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40 stands, so none of Q31–Q45S10 is in production. Sandboxes 0; the q57 tree now holds its artifacts under out/ (E13's rule: 0 paths under out/ in the repo tree). Disk 45 G avail of 154.

Defects of mine, logged first: the out/ citation regression (the citation form survived the tree move; the write path did not), the unlisted "nothing else" sentence, and the clock approximation — none of the four corrections touches a figure, digest, mechanism or verdict, and the adoption pair (4e45021d… + c56230e5a075…) is untouched.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate c56230e5a075c5a12fd2f0d336dcac71c1078cb692a9e6c995780098a051f13e, the manifest_match pin (stale since 2026-10-08), Q13's publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane held for Alexander. Reply 48 asks nothing of this lane and owes nothing in either direction; its four corrections are discharged above.

Next

  1. Nothing is owed to the pipe from this run: reply 48's four citation corrections are discharged, its own §0 mistakes are its own to keep, and its §5 queue block is its own commit.
  2. No new item opened, restated rather than inherited: the Helm executable set is empty, and the one channel §7(d) names (a destination handed over by a third party at runtime) is a hypothesis with no fixture — the ruling this pipe already filed for the equivalent case. The next Helm unit is the cp decision, not a task.

No ask of the pipe.

Run 27 — 2026-10-14 (Merlin)

Did

Reply 51's three open rows are closed, each by measurement on this host, and the lane's stale coefficient is fixed.

  1. C2 coefficient 72 → 16 (the item both reply 49 and reply 51 named). The tree path in the rewritten copy, /root/crucible/q57/q56-plus-twelve, is 34 chars against the baselines' /root/crucible/q55 / /root/crucible/q56 at 18, so the per-occurrence delta is 16, not 12. Six occurrences per cell, so 16 × 6 = 96 — which is exactly what both cells grew (diag_c2_r27.py, measured on bytes). Substituting the long path back for each cell's own root gives len(replaced) − len(orig) = 0 on both, so the tree path explains the growth completely. Four fields, one value each, asserted before the write and re-hashed after (fix_c2_r27.py): out/R25-C2-BYTES.json 1,735 B 887578d0a2bf… → 1,735 B 9fd5f1d23016…; out/R25-C2.json 1,274 B 366593fd8149… → 1,274 B 0c0b2cb65187…. Both files are 0 bytes long across the edit — 72 and 16 are the same width — so the digests are the only evidence. Nothing else moved: growth 96/96, delta_orig/delta_long_tree 210/210, delta_portable true, both gate digests (cd43284ff009…, c56230e5a075…), every byte count.
  2. The hyphenated-subject erratum, two loci. e388225 and 121da2f both carry check-ins/2026-10-14-merlin.md in their subjects; the real path is checkins/…. Commit messages cannot be edited, so both are recorded here and in reply 52 §2.
  3. The 2b834d4 subject size — restated, since reply 50 dropped it. Its subject cites the seed at 13,218 B, which is the parent's size: git cat-file -s 2b834d4:recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md → 18527 (blob 4e3cca9cffd2…); 2b834d4^ → 13218 (blob 4f53c93a708d…). Recorded here and in reply 52 §3.
  4. :688 scoped as an append (the check-in is append-only): the corrected reading is no Run-25 byte or digest was wrong — only the paths and one coefficient. Reply 49's "the unnamed second defect" framing was narrowed by reply 51 and accepted here; the record's :293 parenthetical survives as written.
  5. Live state re-measured, unchanged: snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd880… / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303 / ctime_ns 1791957230760646867; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3… / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071 / ctime_ns 1791957230761646950 — both ctimes still the Run-24 guard-restore pair, so nothing has written either object. Deployed bin 5 files, HELM_COLLECTOR 0 → Q40 stands. Disk 45 G avail of 154 (72 % used, df -h /).

Defects of mine, logged first. The coefficient itself was wrong in Run 25's artifacts and sat there through two replies that quoted it as a figure while grading it as harmless — it is fixed, and the fix is that a prediction was wrong, which neither the byte nor the digest vocabulary covers. My first diagnostic this run also miscounted the shipped cell's baseline as 0 occurrences, because it grepped for /root/crucible/q56 where the shipped cell's root is /root/crucible/q55; the diff_c2_bytes_r25.py count of 6 was right all along. Both are logged, not smoothed.

Attribution. Reply 47 §4's provenance fault: the clone's configured identity is Timmy <timmy@stackchain.ai>, so Run 24–26's commits landed under that author. This run's commits carry -c user.name=Merlin -c user.email=merlin@agents.invalid. Merlin-authored commits at HEAD: 87 before this run.

Blocked

Nothing on the lane. The Helm executable set is empty; the §4 cp is a decision, not a task, and it is Alexander's — collector 4e45021d… (29,954 B / 720 lines) + gate c56230e5a075… (147,151 B / 2,798 lines / 127 registrations) is the only thing that puts Q31–Q45S10's protection into production.

Next

  • No new item opened — the next Helm unit is the §4 adoption decision, not a task. The lane stays closed to new work until that lands.
  • Open asks, all Alexander's and not re-raised to the pipe: the manifest_match pin stale since 2026-10-08, the Q13 wording call (the magazine-040 replacement sentence, drafted and waiting), and log rotation / docker system prune.
  • If a reply asks for a §"Readback" append (the lane's standing convention), it lands as one.

Ask

One line from Alexander, and it is the same one the last three ticks have asked for: do the §4 cp of collector 4e45021d… + gate c56230e5a075… into /root/.helm/bin/ — adopt or hold? Every gate from Q31 to Q45S10 is verified and unmoved in production because HELM_COLLECTOR reads 0 in the deployed bin. This is the single line that turns the lane's work into production protection, and the lane cannot take it without approval.

Run 28 — G10: the deployed page is a stale generation, and the self-test cannot see it

Did

No unclaimed queue item was executable and I did not invent one: Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane's, Q9/Q13/Q19 are gated on Alexander, and Q49's Status: open and unclaimed at WORK-QUEUE.md:6847 is stale — the queue's own hygiene ledger at :8026 records it CLOSED. So the unit is the one Helm defect the lane had measured and labelled but never fixed: the public Helm page publishes a green "match" that is false, and the self-test cannot see it.

Deliverable: recoveries/helm-deployed-page-generation.md (9,953 B at the write; the post-append digest is this run's landing block). Queue block appended at the foot of WORK-QUEUE.md. Scratch tree /root/crucible/q58/; nothing deployed, no cp into /root/.helm/bin/, no write to the live document root, no --deploy anywhere in the G10 block, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret printed. Clock 2026-10-14T13:0x–13:2xZ.

The finding, measured. The Helm's pinned site https://www.stackchainmagazine.net/ is now HTTP 200 / 217,163 B / sha256 c34ae2c245117ca7…; the held pin is f27326e8b13d1dec…, pinned 2026-10-08T16:58:07.100Z, so pin_matches_live_now: false. The deployed page /var/www/alexander-whitestone/helm/index.html is 9,865 B / sha256 427b7b54c69b18d270288910fc810732463129f48ec4bdd7dbc75cdb22997ce4 / mtime 2026-10-11T08:57:14.017Z and renders <span style="color:#22c55e">match</span> with as_of=False, not_rechecked=False. The renderer carrying the fix is helm-render.py 21,766 B / 5c67473d89283c3d… / mtime 2026-10-11T11:12:43.756Z — 8,129.7 s later. Rendering the real snapshot through the real renderer, --out <scratch> --as-of 2026-10-14T00:00:00.000Z, gives rc 0, 11,798 B / sha256 f32191223931e74b421c1412833d6f225385f01d6ab2ff6dd4a38b414f25bccc, carrying "as of 2026-10-08T17:12:59.458Z · 5d 6h 47m ago · not re-checked since". The fix exists, works, and was never deployed.

Why the self-test was green. helm-selftest.py:420-421 runs the qualifier check on a synthetic fixture at a pinned clock (hr.SNAPSHOT = fp), and :422-425's "build_page() writes nothing" proves only that build_page did not overwrite production. Neither reads the deployed artifact. That is the Q34/Q40 law in a new place: a gate that tests the producer cannot vouch for the artifact in the document root.

The fix — gate G10, four checks, on Q45S10's c56230e5a075… (147,151 / 2,798 / 127): helm-selftest-q58.py 153,469 B / sha256 3b98b62fa5c7ea626091f6d0f63566de79818ae414bcffe323dd1ddd53956158 / 2,916 lines / 131 check(" registrations. (1) the contract on real data through the renderer's own CLI — PASS; (2) the deployed page carries the qualifier — FAIL; (3) the predicate discriminates — PASS; (4) read-only, bytes + sha256 + mtime_ns identical around the gate — PASS.

The discriminator, with the prediction stated before the run and met exactly. run_twin_q58.py twins the gate with _g10_deployed repointed at a scratch current-generation render (ast-asserted, and no live-path token in any non-comment line of the G10 block). Shipped: rc 1, 180 passed / 1 failed, stdout 15,055 B / e8304379529c4c83…, stderr 1,791 B. Twin: rc 0, 181 passed / 0 failed, ALL GATES PASS, stdout 14,824 B / fe8c8c72825962d9…. A red row that cannot go green proves nothing; this one goes green on the artifact it exists to check.

Live state, delta 0 across all four gate invocations (bytes + sha256 + mtime_ns): page 9,865 B / 427b7b54c69b18d2… / 1791709034017837233; snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd880… / 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d7071… / 1791478687099553071. Sandboxes 0/0 both ways (shallow glob and recursive rglob) before and after. Deployed bin unchanged, five digests re-read (ee0b36a82f23… / 5c67473d8928… / 7ed1bca8f9da… / 12570786ba70… / 738699986778…); grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 on the deployed self-test, so Q40 stands and G10 is not in production. Disk 45 G avail of 154 (72 %).

Byte-stability measured, not asserted. Two shipped runs are both 180/1 at 15,055 B and byte_stable_stdout reads false — the difference is mkdtemp suffixes in the sandbox path the gate prints (/tmp/tmp8wl8eb44 vs /tmp/tmpsp0jt2_3; helm-legs-gb5_6rox vs helm-legs-5rzmq0xa). The four G10 rows are byte-identical across both runs, and normalising the four path patterns gives stdout sha256 1958d8212fa60e4458ba85b86221e459dcd2f7eaffc0351668e6b74f31e77856 on both with residual differing lines: 0.

Six defects of mine, logged first in the record: two claims in one cell (the first G10 check 3 asserted both the predicate's soundness and the finding, which would have made the twin 180/1 and hidden the discriminator); a report filter written from memory — startswith("PASS") never matches the two-space rendering, the lane's own logged class reproduced on a fresh artifact; a live-path assertion that fired on G5's read-only check and then on G10's own comment; byte_stable_stdout: false reported as found with the cause measured; ast.unparse's single quotes; and pathlib.Path in a gate that imports from pathlib import Path.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — now collector 4e45021d… + gate 3b98b62fa5c7ea626091f6d0f63566de79818ae414bcffe323dd1ddd53956158 (superseding c56230e5a075… / cd43284ff009… / 78b290ecf2d9… / e4967da9…), the manifest_match pin (now shown to be false — §1), the Q13 publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 is Mercury's, Q53 is the career lane's. Nothing deployed this run.

Next

  1. The pipe's verification of this run, when it lands. Everything re-runs from /root/crucible/q58/: measure_r28.py, render_r28.py, patch_gate_q58.py, run_gate_q58.py, run_twin_q58.py, census_q58.py, summarise_r28.py and compare_r28.py are self-contained; out/ holds R28-MEASURE.json, R28-RENDER.json, R28-GATE.json, R28-TWIN.json, R28-CENSUS.json, both repeat-run captures and the twin's gate (host-local — the repo carries 0 paths under out/, E13's rule).
  2. No new item opened. The Helm executable set is empty and the queue's genuinely open items belong to other lanes or to Alexander; the next Helm unit is the cp decision plus the re-render, both of which are Alexander's.

Ask

Alexander's, unchanged and now two-part: (a) re-render and re-deploy the Helm page — the command is in the record's §1 — because the public page currently publishes a green "match" against a pin that measurably does not match, with no clock and no disclaimer; (b) the §4 adoption cp — collector 4e45021d… + gate 3b98b62fa5c7ea62… — the only thing between Q31–Q45S10 and production protection in /root/.helm. No ask of the pipe: this run returned nothing to the pipe's own queue, and G10's own discriminator is discharged by the twin above.

This file's own row defers to the next revision's read — appending this block changes this file's digest, so the row for the commit that carries this block is the next readback and the chain stops here by design (Run 22's landing-fill shape).

The landing delta, measured from git rather than from the append script. git diff --numstat 7af50b5^ 7af50b5 = 72/0 on the queue, 124/0 on this file, 149/0 on the record = 345 insertions, 0 deletions. The queue's byte delta is 1,062,291 → 1,067,607 B = +5,316, and my block is 5,322 B; the 6-byte difference is my block's leading \n---\n\n aligning with the separator the parent already carried, which is also why git counts 72 added lines rather than the 74 my block's own newline count would suggest. Reconstruction verified byte-exact: parent[:1,060,132] + block + parent[1,060,138:] == rev is True, so the pipe's **Erratum, mine: the 13:09Z tick…** block is intact and keeps its own separator. No another-party content was clobbered.

One defect of mine, logged here rather than smoothed: the append script's own printed before figure for the queue was 1,060,143 B against a shared prefix of 1,060,132 B — 11 bytes stale, because sha(QUEUE) and the later QUEUE.read_bytes() are two separate reads and the pipe was writing the file between them (its erratum is stamped 2026-10-14T13:26:06Z, after my 13:25:50Z append and before my 13:27:05Z commit). The file content is correct and every assertion that mattered was on bytes read once and written once; only the printed diagnostic is stale. The git figures above are the authoritative ones, and the check-in was unaffected — parent is a prefix of rev: True, residual 0 B, 124 lines = numstat 124/0 — because the pipe does not write my check-in. This is the concurrent-writer form of Run 24's logged defect, not its unit form: the units were bytes throughout.

Live state at the landing, re-read and unchanged: deployed page 9,865 B / sha256 427b7b54c69b18d270288910fc810732463129f48ec4bdd7dbc75cdb22997ce4 / mtime_ns 1791709034017837233; snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f8… / mtime_ns 1791479579475780303; held pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4… / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071. Run 29 — G11: the pin pill that outlived its reading

Did

No unclaimed queue item was executable and none was invented: Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's (closed at da28ef0), Q52 is Mercury's (closed at 4010b96), Q53 is Mercury's (open), Q9/Q13/Q19 are gated on Alexander, and the queue's own hygiene ledger records the Helm executable set empty. So the unit is the half of Run 28's own finding the fix does not reach — named by the control plane's re-derivation of G10 (WORK-QUEUE.md, 2026-10-14, commit 7ec2172: "the match/drift pill still reads the frozen manifest_match field (renderer :323/:326), so a re-rendered page would show a green 'match' beside 'as of … not re-checked since' while the pin provably no longer matches the live body — internally inconsistent, and the false claim survives"), re-measured here before any edit and confirmed.

Deliverable: recoveries/helm-pin-pill-staleness.md (14,839 B at the write; the post-append digest is this run's landing block, not this paragraph). Queue block appended at the foot of WORK-QUEUE.md. Scratch tree /root/crucible/q59/; nothing deployed, no cp into /root/.helm/bin/, no write to the live document root, no --deploy anywhere, decisions/ and inbox/ untouched, no another-party file edited, no secret printed. Clock from the artifacts: R29-MEASURE.json generated_at 2026-10-14T15:53:07+00:00, R29-GATE.json generated_at 2026-10-14T15:59:55+00:00.

The finding, measured. The held pin is f27326e8b13d1dec9eb158fe40e5091f79dcaf73b47312c4e7d3958ba1d95d18 stackchain-home.html pinned 2026-10-08T16:58:07.100Z (120 B / file sha256 5b6d70716153c3f4… / mtime_ns 1791478687099553071); the live body https://www.stackchainmagazine.net/ fetched this run reads HTTP 200 / 217,163 B / sha256 c34ae2c245117ca73ba5720b2c22b6fab689840070ff68cda7bffe3e723986d4, so pin_matches_live_now is false. The snapshot's stackchain_site block still carries manifest_match: true and live_body_sha256: f27326e8b13d1dec… with evidence.observed_at 2026-10-08T17:12:59.458Z against the collector's own 3600 s threshold. The deployed renderer at --as-of 2026-10-14T16:00:00.000Z emits held copy <span style="color:#22c55e">match</span> (pinned vs live) beside as of 2026-10-08T17:12:59.458Z · 5d 22h 47m ago · not re-checked since while its own verdict pill reads 0 green / 6 not green — green match, its own disclaimer, and 0 green in one page, on a pin measured false today. helm-render.py:323 and :326 read the frozen field; :327-329 builds the qualifier at render. The deployed page (9,865 B / 427b7b54c69b18d2… / mtime 2026-10-11T08:57:14.017Z) carries neither — G10's row, still red — so the defect measured here is the one a re-render would publish.

The fix, one edit. q59/patch_render_r29.py copies the deployed renderer byte-for-byte (digest asserted before the edit; the plain copy is kept for the discriminator) and makes the pill's colour and label a function of site_fresh: fresh → green match; stale → #f59e0b match (unverified); drift → red drift. Fixed renderer q59/helm-render-g11.py 22,735 B / sha256 1e82a1818c57cc9796855ac8ab9de006a3647748596126482ced5df3b5ad3f7a (+969 B / +16 lines on 21,766 B / 5c67473d89283c3d…). Asserted by the patcher: the anchor occurs once, compile() before any write, trailing newline survives, and SNAPSHOT, OUT_DEFAULT, if is_prod and not deploy: and STATE_COLORS["STALE"] each occur exactly once afterwards — the destination gate and the snapshot binding are untouched. The emitted bytes: stale branch 11,806 → 11,819 B (3f48643d8e7bac77… → 951a8a7645fe7ef4…), the +13 B being exactly one span, first differing character at offset 8910, >match< → >match (unverified)<; fresh branch byte-identical at 11,624 B / 1eec213e9e363d36… on both renderers, so the legitimate case is untouched.

The gate, four checks on Q45S10+G10's gate: helm-selftest-q59.py 161,122 B / sha256 125754b270bf6b0f55911f407fa9c36c6161b45a71e646fa36a70db096d7de93 / 3,053 lines / 135 check(" registrations on 3b98b62fa5c7… (153,469 / 2,916 / 131): +7,653 B / +137 lines / +4 registrations, nothing renamed or removed. (1) the contract on real data through the fixed renderer's own CLI at a pinned stale clock — the unqualified green match absent, the amber marked pill present; (2) the fresh branch not over-refused; (3) the discriminator at renderer level — the unpatched renderer, same snapshot, same pinned clock, still prints the unqualified green match, so rows 1–2 measure the edit and not the clock; (4) a four-object read-only census (page, snapshot, pin, renderer) around all three legs — four rather than G10's one, because the renderer reads three of them.

The matrix, prediction stated before the run and met exactly. q59/run_gate_q59.py → out/R29-GATE.json, subject HELM_COLLECTOR=/root/crucible/q48/helm-collect.py (4e45021d…, 29,954 B / 720 lines):

shipped ×1 rc 1 184 passed / 1 failed stdout 15,667 B 4 × G11 PASS
shipped ×2 rc 1 184 passed / 1 failed stdout 15,667 B G11 rows identical
twin rc 1 183 passed / 2 failed stdout 15,786 B G11 row 1 FAIL

The one shipped failure is G10's deployed-page row, unchanged. The twin (2b0d38f3d7a9a211…, 161,124 B) is asserted to be one line different from the shipped gate (line 2888, _g11_renderer repointed at the plain copy) and its row-1 failure names the unpatched output: rc=0 out_bytes=11806 out_sha256=3f48643d8e7bac77 unqualified_green=…. A red row that cannot go green proves nothing; this one goes green on the artifact it exists to check. The two shipped stdouts differ on 4 lines, all per-run mkdtemp tokens, and after normalising the three shapes present they are byte-identical at sha256 ea12512ef4f653ab85d75d64d626cace849fac3e0313ad4c6a0466b08aa95a16, residual 0.

Live state, deployed, sandboxes, disk (out/R29-FINAL.json, re-measured at the end of the run): delta {} on bytes / sha256 / mtime_ns and ctime_ns for all four live objects across all three invocations — snapshot 14,039 B / aa842b0fd88037f8… / 1791479579475780303 / 1791957230760646867; pin 120 B / 5b6d70716153c3f4… / 1791478687099553071 / 1791957230761646950; deployed page 9,865 B / 427b7b54c69b18d2… / 1791709034017837233; deployed renderer 21,766 B / 5c67473d89283c3d…. Deployed /root/.helm/bin/ untouched, five digests re-read (ee0b36a82f23… / 5c67473d8928… / 7ed1bca8f9da… / 12570786ba70… / 738699986778…), and grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR = 0 — Q40 stands, so neither G10 nor G11 is in production. Sandboxes 0/0 both ways before and after each invocation. Disk 45 G free of 154 (72 %).

Limits, stated: the renderer still cannot re-fetch, so the fix marks a stale reading unverified rather than re-measuring it — the pill's honesty is bounded by the collector's clock, and only a re-collect can make the claim current again. The frozen manifest_match: true in the snapshot is still wrong about today and no renderer can correct a field. The deployed page is still the old generation, so G10's red row is unchanged and the public page still carries neither the qualifier nor the conditioned pill.

One defect of mine, logged first: run_gate_q59.py's stdout normalisation used two of the three mkdtemp shapes present and reported stdout_identical_after_sandbox_normalisation: false with sha d9adcf2b…; the missed shape was /tmp/q31-g8-deploy-*. Corrected in final_r29.py, which re-writes the two fields in out/R29-GATE.json and records the correction beside them — true, ea12512ef4f653ab…, residual 0. The lane's own pattern-written-from-memory class, reproduced on a fresh artifact. Nothing else; no figure, digest, count or verdict in the record depends on it.

Blocked

Nothing blocks the lane. The standing human gates are unchanged and none is new: the §4 adoption cp — now collector 4e45021d… + gate 125754b270bf…, with the renderer 1e82a1818c57… required before any re-render (superseding 3b98b62fa5c7… / c56230e5a075… / cd43284ff009… / 78b290ecf2d9… / e4967da9… / a951dbe8…), the manifest_match pin (stale, and now measured false against the live body), the Q13 publication call (item 13's decided note controls over its proposed_action), Q9's checksum handover, Q19's onboarding. Q42 is zephyrus-sparkborn's, Q52 Mercury's, Q53 the career lane's. Nothing deployed this run: grep -c HELM_COLLECTOR /root/.helm/bin/helm-selftest.py = 0, so Q40 stands.

Next

  1. The pipe's verification of this run, when it lands. Everything re-runs from /root/crucible/q59/: measure_r29.py, patch_render_r29.py, make_gate_q59.py, make_twin_q59.py, run_gate_q59.py, final_r29.py, diffcheck.py, normstdout.py and tailcheck.py are self-contained; out/ holds R29-MEASURE.json, R29-GATE.json, R29-FINAL.json, the three invocations' stdout and stderr and the four renders (host-local — the repo carries 0 paths under out/, E13's rule).
  2. No new item opened. The Helm executable set is empty apart from this lane's own measured residual; the next Helm unit is the adoption sequence, not a task.

Ask

Alexander's, unchanged in substance and now a sequence: (a) adopt the renderer 1e82a1818c57cc9796855ac8ab9de006a3647748596126482ced5df3b5ad3f7a (22,735 B) into /root/.helm/bin/, then the §4 cp of collector 4e45021d… + gate 125754b270bf6b0f55911f407fa9c36c6161b45a71e646fa36a70db096d7de93 (161,122 B / 3,053 lines / 135 registrations) — in that order, because a re-render on the current renderer publishes the internally inconsistent page this run measures; (b) the Q13 publication call. No ask of the pipe: this run returned nothing to the pipe's own queue, and G11's discriminator is discharged by the twin above.
