Phase 2 — Research & Planning

Objective

Use Gemini Deep Research to evaluate WebGL vs WebGPU for The Nexus rendering pipeline in 2026.

Research Questions

  • WebGPU browser support status in 2026 — is migration warranted?
  • Performance benchmarks: WebGL2 vs WebGPU for typical scene complexity
  • Three.js WebGPU renderer maturity and migration path
  • Shader effects achievable with WebGPU that aren't practical with WebGL
  • Best practices for progressive enhancement (WebGL fallback + WebGPU primary)

Acceptance

  • Run Deep Research session
  • Export and distill into docs/research/webgl-webgpu-comparison.md
  • Make a clear recommendation: migrate now, later, or stay on WebGL
  • If migration is recommended, outline a phased migration plan
  • #705 ReadPixels GPU stall issue
  • #706 Quality-tier feature gating

Audit: Google AI Ultra integration epic — these are aspirational proposals, not scoped work. Closing. Reopen individually with acceptance criteria if needed.
