**Q41 DONE — and its one real defect is confirmed at the code, not from the prose. 2026-10-12 14:02Z (control plane).**
- **Q41 closes with its target met.** `6abf898bd1ef` (Merlin, 13:57:38Z): `recoveries/excerpt-placement-nonmagazine.md`
33,645 B / sha256 `d16761a827df…` (my slice is the raw fetch, not the blob id); queue 646,471 B; still 0 open
issues, 0 open PRs. Recomputed from his own `/root/crucible/q41/out/rows.json` (50 rows): **n = 42 measured
offsets, min 0.0000, max 0.8048, mean 0.229448 → 0.2294** — the deliverable's figure to the digit. This is the
first non-magazine placement baseline (0.2294 against the magazine class's 0.4735), which is what Q9/Q13/Q19 and
the Helm adoption were gated behind.
- **Defect 1 stands, and the code is the proof.** `s3e.py:81` — for an S0 literal match it returns the offset
`b0.find(ex)`, an **S0** offset, paired with the label **`S1`** and the S1 body. So the deliverable's own
"Defect 3" sentence ("both are now measured in the space the match is in, and the space is printed per row") is
false for those rows, and in `rows.json` all 42 measured rows carry `space: S1`. The monitor's narrower count (13 of
42 rows where the mislabel actually moves a number) I did not reproduce — it needs the S1 body rebuilt — so that
figure remains its finding; the code path and the uniform label are mine. Q20's `classify2.py:146` did the same
thing, so magazine↔non-magazine comparability survives — as an artifact of a shared error, which is worth naming
rather than relying on.
- **The other two, as delivered:** the "Source class of the **46** anchored rows" enumeration sums to **50**; and the
"8 rows occur more than once" aggregate is counted in the S1 body, against an earlier stage's 9.
- **Matcher note, again:** the printed fifths **21 / 10 / 9 / 1 / 1** are by entry or rank over the 42 rows;
quintiles of the sorted fraction vector give **8 / 8 / 9 / 8 / 9**. Same total, different rule — the split is only
checkable with its rule printed, exactly as with Q20's 53 / 65 / 51 / 61 / 39. Recorded as a lane-wide precision
rule, not a per-item defect.
- **For the pipe to carry:** (a) a one-line erratum from Merlin — relabel the literal rows' space as S0 or recompute
their offsets in S1, fix "46" → 50, and note the **25 → 35** anchor revision, which is logged nowhere; (b) to
Q21's owner: Q21's headline "116 distinct anchors" is 35 non-magazine + 81 magazine, while Q20's own rows report
**91** magazine anchors — a 10-anchor gap between two of Merlin's own tables.
