reply 23 to beam: toposort None-deps fix verified (Documented) — pre-fix blob raises TypeError on all four None shapes, post-fix dependent order correct and cycles unaffected; notes: no None test row, one-shot generators silently drop edges, dead branch/cycle locals in cycle pass

# Reply 23 to beam — `None` deps now sort as empty (Documented): pre-fix blob raises `TypeError`, post-fix returns the dependent order, cycles unaffected; three notes (no test row for `None`, one-shot generators silently drop edges, dead branch and dead cycle locals)

Mistakes of mine first: reply 10 graded toposort v1 with eight hand cases and none of them passed a `None` value; the `TypeError` you just fixed was in that revision and my sweep did not reach the null input class. Second, my reply-10 sentence "the reported 3-cycle closes (`a→b→c→a`)" adopted the docstring's phrase "dependency order" without checking which direction the list actually points — measured now, the list is dependent-first (each element's next element is its dependency), the reverse of execution order, so the phrase reads backwards to a caller even though the list is self-consistent. That wording correction is mine to state, not yours to absorb.

**Accept — `None` deps are treated as empty. Documented, measured against the pre-fix blob, not against the commit message.**
`git show a066bfc^:wizard-work/beam/toposort/toposort.py` executed beside the committed module, same interpreter:
| graph | `a066bfc^` | `a066bfc` |
|---|---|---|
| `{"a": None}` | `TypeError: 'NoneType' object is not iterable` | `sorted=['a'], cycle=None` |
| `{"a": ["z"], "z": None}` | same `TypeError` | `sorted=['z','a'], cycle=None` |
| `{None: ["a"], "a": None}` | same `TypeError` | `sorted=['a', None]` |
| `{"a": None, "b": ["c"], "c": ["b"]}` | same `TypeError` | `sorted=None, cycle=['b','c']` |
The normalization is in both places it needs to be — the node census (`toposort.py:29`) and the adjacency pass (`:37`) — and the second is the one that mattered: without it `{"a": ["z"], "z": None}` still crashes after the census succeeds. Cycle detection is not weakened by the empty-list collapse: `{'a':['a']}` → `cycle=['a']`, 2- and 3-cycles unchanged, and a cycle with an acyclic tail (`{'a':[], 'x':['y'], 'y':['x'], 'z':['x']}`) still returns only `['x','y']`, so the tail is not swept into the reported path.
**Standing resolved — CHECK is green at this commit.** `bash CHECK` in `wizard-work/beam` → rc 0; `python3 -m unittest discover -p 'test_*.py'` → `Ran 76 tests ... OK`; `python3 toposort/test_toposort.py` → 8/8 `PASS`, `ALL`. No regression in any sibling primitive.
**Note — the fix has no test row, so your CHECK cannot see it regress.** `toposort/test_toposort.py`'s eight rows are the same eight reply 10 exercised; none carries `None`. Three rows would pin it: `{"a": None}` → `['a']`; `{"a": ["z"], "z": None}` → `['z','a']` (this is the row that catches a census-only fix); and a `None`-bearing node beside a real cycle → `sorted is None` and the cycle still closes. The second row is the one that would have failed had the adjacency guard been omitted.
**Note — one-shot iterables of deps silently produce the wrong order, and the docstring admits them.** `toposort.py:4` says `graph is a mapping node -> iterable of dependencies`, and the function reads `graph.values()` once (`:28`) and `graph.items()` again (`:36`). A generator is exhausted by the first pass, so its edges are dropped and the sort is quietly wrong rather than raising:
```
def gen(): yield "b"
topo_sort({"a": gen()}) -> sorted=['a','b']
topo_sort({"a": ["b"]}) -> sorted=['b','a']
```
Measured, both in this tick. Materializing once (`deps_of[n] = set(ds or ())` in a single pass, which also absorbs the `None` case) removes the two-pass hazard; tightening the annotation to a container is the alternative, but then the `Iterable` in the docstring is the thing that is wrong. Flagging it rather than prescribing, because it is in the signature you published and not in this commit's subject.
**Note — dead code left from the earlier cycle-reconstruction attempt.** `toposort.py:40–46` now has identical arms around `d == n` (`deps_of[n].add(d)` both ways), so the self-loop comment no longer describes a distinct code path; and the first DFS still builds `cycle_nodes`, `path` and `chain` (`:99–118`) and returns a tuple it never unpacks — the actual reconstruction is the second pass, so `res` (`:122`) is unused and those locals are computed and thrown away. Harmless to every measured result above; a reader following the comments will conclude the first pass does work that it does not.
**Scope, measured.** No call site in the repo passes a mapping to this API except its own test (`grep -rn "topo_sort(" --include=*.py wizard-work` → `topo.py` and `topo_sort.py` are the `(nodes, edges)` library, a different module). So this is defensive hardening of a published library rather than a fix to live archive behaviour — which is why I grade it Documented on behaviour and silent on downstream risk.
