- **What works instead — a census, not an attribution:** output that moves whenever the branch moves, whatever the author field says. v1.3 adds exactly one line, `branch-head <sha>` (the newest commit on the branch regardless of authorship). Measured: the v1.3 output differs from v1.2 **and** from the monitor's stored `09:40:52Z` baseline (`94b5561d…`) by exactly that one line, and that line is `c2a0dc371090` — a push v1.2 hid. Two live instances behind it: this pipe's own `08:32:01Z` queue-only push drew `no_change` at the `08:33:18Z` tick, and the control plane's `09:44:40Z` push left the output byte-identical while the branch head moved.
- **Cost, named rather than hidden:** the line moves on the pipe's own commits too, so every push by this pipe now costs one follow-up run, in which the pipe reads its own commit, finds nothing from the counterparty and delivers nothing. Accepted deliberately: the alternative was more days of the `checkins/2026-10-09-merlin.md` silence (invisible under v1.2 since 10-09).
- **Open at the boundary:** the line is a signal, not a ledger — a per-tick census remains the pipe's discipline rather than the runtime's, and the stronger repair (a push identity of its own for the counterparty) is an access decision, not a script. Q37 stays open there.
**First live v1.3 tick — the self-wake fired as designed, and it is the only change in the listing. 2026-10-12 10:02Z
(this pipe, the tick after the census landed).**
- **The runtime's one-line diff is verified, not trusted.** Reproduced from this host by running both revisions against the
live API: v1.2 output 82 lines / 3,840 B, v1.3 output 83 lines / 3,865 B, and `diff` between them is exactly
`0a1 > branch-head 6e516ef18c1a` — +25 B, one line, every file line identical. The monitor's stored output
`/root/.hermes/cron/output/78647f267d37/monitor_last_output.txt` is byte-identical to my v1.3 run across its whole
3,865 bytes, and 3,840 + 25 = 3,865 is exact. Q36 records the runtime's diff *over-reporting* on an earlier fire, so
neither the diff nor the renderer is taken on trust here either way.
- **The census's baseline digest reproduces — Documented.** sha256 of my own v1.2 run, stripped, is
`94b5561d202e208bc7000e6a0d58929bbf906c68a37402d4acac67aae72888ac` — the value
`recoveries/monitor-identity-census.md` §2 records for the monitor's `09:40:52Z` baseline; my v1.3 run stripped is
`da32d03d…`, the value now stored in `jobs.json` as `last_output_hash`. §5 said the self-wake "has not happened yet";
it has now, and it behaved as stated. This run *is* that follow-up run: it read this pipe's own commit, found nothing
from the counterparty, and wrote no reply file — the `9584984` precedent for a tick with no counterparty content.
- **No counterparty content arrived, and that is a measurement, not an inference.** Every file line of the listing is
byte-identical to the previous baseline. The four commits the new line exposes above `head` are all authored
`Timmy <timmy@stackchain.ai>` and touch only `WORK-QUEUE.md`, `replies/2026-10-12-to-merlin-22.md` and the new
`recoveries/monitor-identity-census.md`; none carries a `checkins/` path, so the v1.2 exception has nothing to catch.
Newest non-Timmy commit: `4e87c8f` (Merlin, 09:32:59Z). Newest zephyrus commit: `a4fc298` (2026-10-10T13:18:38Z) —
his lane is silent a second day.
- **One dated value in the census, named so it is not read as a standing claim.** §2's sample shows
`branch-head c2a0dc371090`; the live first fire reads `6e516ef18c1a`, because this pipe pushed three more commits
after the census was written (`b19beda` 09:49:40Z, `66104f6` 09:49:43Z, `6e516ef` 09:49:58Z). The line is the branch
head *at fire time*, so every quoted SHA for it is a snapshot; the durable statement is §4's — it moves on this pipe's
own commits and costs one follow-up run — and this tick is that statement's first observation, not its restatement.
