# dump_seed refactor verification (forge lane: Refactor)
## The shipped artifact
Four files under `wizard-work/forge/`:
- `_dump_seed.py` -- original probe; byte-identical copy of the live
`inbox/dump_seed.py` (sha256 `7444cba891b99702c1b790fc15b87a3c11c3b312dca66d1afdce89c0b0a16d95`,
confirmed with `diff -q` against the live probe).
- `_dump_seed_refactored.py` -- refactored probe, smells removed.
- `verify_dump_seed_refactor.py` -- equivalence + smell-absence harness.
- `_dump_seed_refactor_CHECK_EVIDENCE.txt` -- captured verifier run.
## The smell (what the refactor fixes)
The original is a throwaway triage probe that does everything at module scope:
1. **Import-time file I/O.** It opens and `json.load`s the inbox seed at import
time and holds the result in a module-global `d`, so merely importing the
module runs the probe against a fixed, host-absolute path.
2. **Hard-coded host-absolute path.** `path = "/root/troupe-standup/inbox/seed-2026-09-26.json"`
is baked in as a module-level assignment -- a clone cannot grade its own inbox.
3. **No `__main__` guard / zero function definitions.** Two module-level `for`
loops print directly; the module is not importable without side effects.
## The refactor
`_dump_seed_refactored.py`:
- Moves all file I/O and printing behind `main()` -- import is side-effect-free.
- Promotes the hard-coded path to the tree-portable constant `DEFAULT_PATH`
(resolved from `__file__`, two directories up = repo root, then `inbox/`),
used as the optional `path` argument of `main()` so a clone grades its own
inbox (Q86 portability).
- Extracts pure helpers `_print_header`, `_print_decided`, `_print_pending`
and `load_data`, and passes `d` to the helpers instead of a module-global.
- Keeps `json` and `os` both referenced (no dead imports).
Output is **byte-identical** to the original on the real seed (6912 bytes both
ways, identical sha256 -- see evidence file).
## Non-tautology proof (the detector is sensitive, not theater)
Against the committed original `_dump_seed.py`:
- The original still exhibits every removed smell: no `__main__` guard,
module-scope absolute `path = <literal>`, two module-level `for` loops,
zero function definitions, and `>=2` module-scope `open()` / `json.load()`
I/O calls -- so smell-absence checks are not vacuously passing.
- `main(path=custom)` honors the override: a custom temp JSON's marker
`OVERRIDE_2099_MARKER` appears in the output and the real seed's
`exported_at` does not. (This kills the mutation that accepts `path` but
ignores it -- byte-identical-on-real-seed would NOT catch that.)
- The Q89 pathlib-aware io-audit (static AST walk + `builtins.open` spy)
reports zero module-scope I/O on the clean module, and is proven sensitive
by two mutant kills:
- **M6 mutant:** an injected module-scope `_bootstrap = json.load(open(DEFAULT_PATH))`
is flagged (2 io calls detected).
- **pathlib mutant:** an injected module-scope `Path(DEFAULT_PATH).read_text()`
is flagged (`pathlib.read_text`).
- Per-spelling non-vacuity: all 13 modeled io spellings are detected
individually at module scope, and a non-io module-scope call (`len(...)`)
is correctly NOT flagged.
## Verifier output (16 checks, all pass, exit 0)

"""Behavior-preserving refactor of the ``inbox/dump_seed.py`` probe.
The original ran its entire probe at module top level: it assigned a
hard-coded, host-absolute seed path to a module-global ``path``, opened and
``json.load``-ed the seed at import time (real import-time file I/O), held the
result in a module-global ``d``, and ran two module-level ``for`` loops that
printed directly -- with no ``if __name__ == "__main__"`` guard and zero

This refactor:
* moves all file I/O and printing behind ``main()`` (import is side-effect
free -- the probe does not run on import);
* promotes the hard-coded host path to the tree-portable constant
``DEFAULT_PATH`` (resolved from ``__file__``) and makes it the optional
``path`` argument of ``main()``, so a clone grades its own inbox (Q86);
* extracts the printing into pure helpers ``_print_header``, ``_print_decided``,
``_print_pending`` and ``load_data``, and passes ``d`` to the helpers instead
of relying on a module-global.

"""Verification harness for the _dump_seed_refactored.py refactor.
Exit 0 = all checks pass; exit 1 = at least one failure.
The target ``_dump_seed.py`` is a byte-exact copy of the throwaway probe
``inbox/dump_seed.py`` (it dumps the KEYS/exported_at/cutover header plus the
decided/pending triage items from the inbox seed
``inbox/seed-2026-09-26.json``). The original ran the whole probe at module
top level: it hard-coded a host-absolute seed path, opened and ``json.load``-ed
the seed at import time (real import-time file I/O), held the result in a
module-global ``d``, and ran two module-level ``for`` loops -- with no
``if __name__ == "__main__"`` guard and zero function definitions. The refactor
is *behavior-preserving* on the probe itself (same input, byte-identical
output).
Checks:
1. Refactored file compiles (py_compile).
2. Original and refactored produce byte-identical stdout+stderr AND exit code.
3. ``if __name__ == "__main__"`` guard present in code (the original's
primary smell; docstring-only matches do not count -- ``_code_only``
strips the module docstring and comments).
4. No ``global`` statements in code.
5. Import of the refactored module is side-effect-free (no stdout/stderr and
no SystemExit at import -- the original's primary smell).
6. Pure helpers ``_print_header``, ``_print_decided``, ``_print_pending``,
``load_data`` and ``main`` are module-level functions, and ``main`` calls
the three print helpers (extraction is real, not just renamed).
7. ``main`` delegates via distinct standalone statements (no ``;``-compacted
statements that would collapse the call boundaries into one line).
8. ``main`` accepts a ``path`` parameter (the hardcoded path is now
configurable, not a module-level assignment that runs on import).
9. No dead imports introduced: ``json`` and ``os`` are both referenced in
code (the refactor keeps ``json`` for the load and adds ``os`` for the
tree-portable path -- neither is left dangling).
10. Non-vacuity: the *original* ``_dump_seed.py`` still exhibits the removed
smells (no __main__ guard, hardcoded host-absolute path at module scope,
>=2 module-level for-loops, zero function definitions, >=1 module-scope
open()/json.load() import-time I/O call).
11. ``main(path=custom)`` honours the override: a custom temp JSON's marker
appears in the output and the real seed's ``exported_at`` does not. This
kills the mutation of a ``path`` parameter that is accepted but ignored
(byte-identical on the real seed would not catch this).
12. No import-time I/O on the clean module: a static AST walk of the top-level
statements plus a runtime ``builtins.open`` spy both require zero calls.
The static detector is pathlib-aware (Q89): it also flags module-scope
``Path(...).read_text()`` / ``read_bytes()`` / ``open()``, which the old
name-list missed.
13. M6 mutant killed: a silent module-scope ``_bootstrap = json.load(open(...))``
injected at module scope is detected by the io-audit (rc 0, zero output to
the silence test, so the static io-audit is what kills it).
14. pathlib mutant killed: a module-scope ``Path(DEFAULT_PATH).read_text()`` --
the Q89 spelling the old detector let through -- is detected by the io-audit.
15. Per-spelling non-vacuity: for every modelled io spelling, a module-scope
call of that spelling is detected; a non-io module-scope call is not.
Proves the detector is sensitive, not a constant-True no-op. Tree-
portable: the refactored source holds no host-absolute seed literal and
``DEFAULT_PATH`` resolves inside this repo's tree.
