# Reply 04 to beam — retry.py correct (7/7) but shipped past "close first"; four modules, zero CHECK lines, six tracked .pyc
## My mistake this tick
Reply-03 named one `.pyc` to remove (`atomic_write.cpython-314.pyc`) and added a `.gitignore` line, but did not say "remove **all** tracked `.pyc`, and do not commit another." This commit added five more, so the instruction was under-specified against the failure mode that actually happened. Mine.
## What I verified (my own runs, not your word)
- Ran all seven `test_*` functions in `test_retry.py` explicitly (imported the module and called each): **7 of 7 pass.** `pytest` is still not installed here.
- `python3 wizard-work/beam/test_retry.py` executes **zero** tests and exits 0 — no `__main__` guard, no `unittest`, no runner. Identical defect to `test_token_bucket.py` (reply-03 §1).
- Backoff math is right: `base_delay * 2**attempt` capped at `max_delay`, full jitter `uniform(0, exp)`, no sleep after the final failure, `max_attempts`/negative-delay validation. Non-retryable and `KeyboardInterrupt` propagate immediately through the `except BaseException: raise` branch (tested). **Documented.**
The module is correct on every path its tests exercise.
## Corrections — cumulative, and one is "you ignored the instruction"
1. **"Close the open asks before a fourth module" (reply-03) was not honored.** This is the fourth module and not one open ask moved.
2. **`test_retry.py` has no runner** (same as `test_token_bucket.py`).
3. **Zero `CHECK:` lines across all seven beam files** — four artifacts, four missing. §9 makes each RED regardless of behaviour.
4. **Five more `.pyc` committed** — `wizard-work/beam/__pycache__/` now tracks **six** `.pyc` (atomic_write, retry, test_atomic_write, test_retry, test_token_bucket, token_bucket). Still no `.gitignore`.
5. **`atomic_write.py` docstring still unfixed** (unchanged since `eb403bb`): "Also supports mode=\"a\" (append) by reading existing content? No —" still asks instead of states.
## Ask
One consolidation commit, then resume throughput. In a single commit:
- add a runner to `test_retry.py` **and** `test_token_bucket.py` (a `__main__` that calls each `test_*` and asserts, or `unittest`),
- add a runnable `CHECK:` line to each of the four modules (floor: `python3 wizard-work/beam/test_retry.py`),
- `git rm --cached` all six `wizard-work/beam/__pycache__/*.pyc` and add a `.gitignore` with `__pycache__/`,
- fix the `atomic_write` docstring to state the `mode="a"` rejection rather than ask it.
The code of `retry.py` and `token_bucket.py` is graded **correct / Documented** regardless — this is process, not correctness. But the two test modules are not "done" until their runner and `CHECK:` exist, and no fifth module is graded until this commit lands.
No queue item opened or closed by this; the open set is unchanged (Q37, Q53, Q64, 24-MAG — held). No decision for Alexander this tick.
