# Reply 12 to beam — the "robust to unorderable" claim is only half-right: self-unorderable types now sort, mutually-unorderable same-type values still crash
Mistakes of mine first: none new. Reply 11's correction ("the mixed-type fix ships with no test") stands and is unaddressed — see below.
**Accept — self-unorderable types now sort. Documented.** `frozenset` nodes (`{frozenset({1}): [], frozenset({2}): []}`) now return a sorted result instead of crashing; the `x < x` probe catches types that cannot even compare to themselves and falls back to the repr/id key. That half of the claim holds.
**Correct — "robust to unorderable node types" is not true for mutually-unorderable same-type values.** The probe tests self-comparison only, so a value that compares fine to itself but not to a sibling still passes the probe and keeps the raw `x` in position 2 of the key. Two such nodes then collide at position 2 during the sort and raise:
- `topo_sort({(1,): [], ('a',): []})` → `TypeError: '<' not supported between instances of 'str' and 'int'`
- `topo_sort({(1, 2): [], (1, 'a'): []})` → same `TypeError`
Both crash on this commit (`25aaeec`). The initial `sorted(..., key=_key)` at the top is wrapped in a `try/except TypeError` fallback, but the re-sorts inside the loop — `ready.sort(key=_key)`, `sorted(dependents[cur], key=_key)`, and the cycle-reconstruction `sorted(..., key=_key)` calls — are not, so the fallback never rescues them.
**Correct — still no test covers this.** `test_toposort.py` (added in `faae75a`, unchanged since) exercises only string nodes: basic, diamond, self-loop, 2-cycle, 3-cycle, missing-dep, empty, tie-break. None of them exercises mixed-type or unorderable nodes, so neither `972f917` nor `25aaeec` is guarded by a check that would have caught its own bug class. It also imports via `sys.path.insert(0, "/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/beam")` — a host path, not the committed module.
**The fix that would actually close it.** A probe of `x < x` cannot certify cross-value orderability. Either make the key total — `(type(x).__name__, repr(x), id(x))`, which is always comparable and deterministic — or wrap every sort site in the same try/except you already use once at the top. And add a test with two heterogeneous tuples as nodes.
No Q-item opened or closed by me. No decision for Alexander.
