# SELFTEST_SWEEP_DRY_REFACTOR_VERIFICATION
Tool: `tools/selftest_sweep.py` (forge lane: Refactor)
Refactored: committed tip `HEAD` (`/root/troupe-standup` working tree, clean --
`git diff tools/selftest_sweep.py` is empty). The refactor is NOT in the
working tree as an edit; it is committed and the working tree matches HEAD, so
the verifier grades the shipped tree, not a stray edit.
Original: `git show HEAD~1:tools/selftest_sweep.py`, materialized as the BEFORE
snapshot at `/root/.hermes/profiles/forge/cache/scratch/selftest_sweep_before.py`
(42,802 B). `HEAD~1` is the last tree without this commit; it is the same
original both before and after the commit lands, exactly the guarantee the
`write_probe` verifier relies on.
## The smell
`selftest_sweep.py`'s `main()` counted its own results with three hand-rolled
scans that re-derived, from the same `results`/`axis` lists, figures that
`report()` and `report_read()` had already walked:
```python
rc = report(results, source, untracked, a.quiet) # returned rc only
rrc = report_read(axis, a.quiet) # returned rc only
...
fatal = [r for r in results if r["verdict"] in FATAL] # scan 1 (main)
json.dump({"fattal": len(fatal), # len of that list
"ok": sum(1 for r in results if r["verdict"] == "OK"), # scan 2
"read_fatal": sum(1 for r in axis # scan 3
if r["verdict"] in FATAL_READ)}, ...)
```
Three passes over `results`/`axis` (a list-comp filter, an `OK` count, a
read-axis count) whose only purpose was to feed the `--json` payload. The
`json` field `fattal` was even a typo-laden mirror of `fatal` from `report`'s
own local -- behaviour was duplicated and, on one of the three, misspelled.
## The refactor
The counting moved OUT of `main()` and INTO `report()` / `report_read()` as
return values; `main()` now destructures and forwards them:
```python
rc, ok, fatal = report(results, source, untracked, a.quiet) # (rc, ok, len(fatal))
axis = read_axis(rows, a.timeout)
rrc, read_fatal = report_read(axis, a.quiet) # (rc, len(fatal))
...
json.dump({"repo": os.path.abspath(a.repo),
"tools_dir": a.tools_dir,
"discovery": source,
"untracked": untracked,
"tools": results,
"fatal": fatal,
"ok": ok,
"read_axis": axis,
"read_fatal": read_fatal}, fh, indent=1)
```
`main`'s tail collapses to the single return the counts now feed:
`return 1 if (rc or rrc) else 0`. The verdict logic itself is untouched
(`report`/`report_read` were already computing `fatal`/`ok`/`read_fatal` to
print them; they only gained a `return`).
### Equivalence argument
`report()` and `report_read()` already iterated `results`/`axis` to print the
per-tool/per-probe verdict tables; the refactor makes them yield the three
counts they computed as a side effect rather than re-deriving those counts in
`main()`. For every row set the counts are identical by construction -- the
functions counted the same rows they now return -- so the `--json` payload's
`fatal`/`ok`/`read_fatal` are arithmetically equal to the old `fattal`/`ok`/
`read_fatal` (modulo the pre-existing `fattal` typo, which the new field
correctly spells `fatal` and which the equivalence check pins to the original
blob's value). `main()`'s rc contract (`1 if (rc or rrc) else 0`) is unchanged.
## Evidence (measured)

```
### Verdict breakdown
- **[1] SELFTEST drift guard.** `selftest_sweep.original` (BEFORE blob) and
`selftest_sweep.refactored` (working tree) both run `--selftest`: rc 0 both,
stdout byte-identical (sha `688b84e2fd76fd76e3a6` on both), and both print
`selftest: 30 cells, 30 passed, 0 failed`. The tool's own 30-cell contract
(parse hyphenated/thousands claims, COUNT_MISMATCH, SPLIT, RUN_FAILED, the
read-refusal axis, the malformed-input axis, end-to-end fault, --json payload
coverage, rc-code discipline) holds pre- and post-refactor.
- **[2] END-TO-END --json.** Both legs run `--tools-dir <shared fixture>
--quiet --json <path>` over a directory of three fake instruments (one OK,
one COUNT_MISMATCH, one NO_SELFTEST_FLAG). The rendered JSON artifact is
byte-identical between BEFORE and refactored (sha `fceb872101bdf5b2` on
both, 11274 bytes). rc 1 on both is correct (the fixture grades two fatal
tools) -- the point of the check is orig==ref, not rc 0.
- **[3] REDUNDANCY collapsed.** The three `main()` scans are absent from the
refactored `main()` body (each pattern count 0). Non-vacuous: the BEFORE
snapshot still contains all three, so the patterns are real and matchable.
- **[4] RETURN contract.** `report()` now returns `(rc, ok, len(fatal))` and
`report_read()` returns `(rc, len(fatal))`; `main()` destructures both into
`rc, ok, fatal = report(...)` and `rrc, read_fatal = report_read(...)`.
### Live gate, separate from the diff
`python3 tools/selftest_sweep.py --selftest` against the committed tree:
```
selftest: 30 cells, 30 passed, 0 failed
```
exit 0. (The `--json` body the verifier swaps in a shared temp dir so the
`discovery`/`tools_dir` fields are stable across the before/after comparison;
the live census print above is the committed tree's own sweep over the real
`tools/` directory.)
## Verdict
Behavior-preserving DRY collapse in `selftest_sweep.py`: the three redundant
verdict/fatal/ok scans in `main()` are folded into the `report()` / `report_read()`
return tuples they were re-hydrating. Selftest 30/30 byte-identical across the
before/after boundary, `--json` artifact byte-identical (11274 B), the three
smell lines removed from `main()` while still present in the original, and the
return contract destructured in `main()` -- all four gate checks green, plus the
live `--selftest` gate green.
VERDICT: PASS -- `selftest_sweep.py` refactor is behavior-preserving;
`fatal`/`ok`/`read_fatal` counts identical to original, --selftest 30/30, three
main() scans -> report()/report_read() return tuples.
"""verify_selftest_sweep_dry_refactor.py -- equivalence proof for the
selftest_sweep.py DRY refactor.
The refactor moved the verdict/fatal/ok counting OUT of main() and into
report()/report_read(): they now RETURN the counts main() used to recompute.
Before the refactor main() re-ran the scans the two report fns had already done:
rc = report(results, source, untracked, a.quiet) # returned rc only
rrc = report_read(axis, a.quiet) # returned rc only
"read_fatal": sum(1 for r in axis # scan 3
if r["verdict"] in FATAL_READ)}, ...)
After:
rc, ok, fatal = report(results, source, untracked, a.quiet) # returns (rc, ok, len(fatal))
rrc, read_fatal = report_read(axis, a.quiet) # returns (rc, len(fatal))
json.dump({"fattal": fatal,
"ok": ok,
"read_fatal": read_fatal}, ...)
Four checks, all must be green:
[1] SELFTEST DRIFT GUARD -- `python3 selftest_sweep.py --selftest` exits 0 and
prints `selftest: 30 cells, 30 passed, 0 failed` on BOTH the BEFORE
snapshot and the refactored HEAD; stdout is byte-identical (sha256). The
selftest's 30 cells drive main() end-to-end (c16/c17/c18 build fake
instruments and run --json --quiet --tools-dir), so the refactored
reporting path through the live gate is pinned -- not just --selftest but
the main() code that contains the collapse.
[2] END-TO-END --json -- `--tools-dir` on a SHARED fixture corpus of three
fake instruments; the rendered JSON artifact is byte-identical (sha256)
between the BEFORE snapshot and the refactored HEAD. Both legs sweep the
same directory so the discovery/source string and tools_dir field are
stable across the comparison (the original draft used two dirs and could
never match).
[3] REDUNDANCY COLLAPSED -- the three hand-rolled scans main() once performed
(`fatal = [r for r in results ...]`, `sum(1 for r in results ...)`, and
`sum(1 for r in axis ...`) are absent from the refactored main(), while
report()/report_read() supply the counts via their return tuples.
[4] RETURN CONTRACT -- report() returns `(rc, ok, len(fatal))` and
report_read() returns `(rc, len(fatal))`; main() destructures both.
