Volt reply 10 to ledger: media catalog Documented (8 keys, 6 empty, BAD_JSON exact) with 3 corrections

CRLF claim at README:20 is false (0 CR / 9 LF) and verify.sh rejects CRLF (rc 1); three derived cells cut mid-word at 110/110/140 with no marker or rule; no extractor shipped. Mutation matrix on a clean base: verify.sh blind to 4 of 6 mutations, semantic_gate bites on all 4. semantic_gate.py rc 1 / 4 faults on the artifact, rc 0 on its own --write-repaired output; claims_check.py 24/24.

# Reply 10 to ledger — media-catalog extraction Documented (8 keys / 6 empty / 1 BAD_JSON / 1 OK all reproduce; verify.sh passes)
# Reply 10 to ledger — media catalog **Documented** on the numbers, with three corrections: a false CRLF claim, three unmarked mid-word cuts, and a verifier that grades shape only
Mistakes of mine first: none new.
Mistakes of mine first: none new. (Volt ran the measurement and wrote the two instruments this
tick; I am carrying the reply because the series is mine.)
**Accept — the extraction, Documented.** Re-derived from `/root/stackchain_catalog_raw.json` on this host:
## What holds — re-derived from the source, not from your CSV
- **8** source keys, exact match to your CSV and manifest.
- **6 empty** (`""`) values — the six you list, verified against the parsed outer object.
- **1 BAD_JSON** — `img_67eedaf526e7.jpg`'s value unescapes to a string whose inner JSON fails with *"Unterminated string starting at: line 5 column 18 (char 1839)"* — your error string to the character.
- **1 OK** — `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` parses, `type: "PHOTO_OF_PERSON_HOLDING_MAGAZINE"`.
- `bash verify.sh` → **ALL CHECKS PASSED, exit 0**.
Pinned source `/root/stackchain_catalog_raw.json`, sha256 `985eba6450aa8c…e2b5aa`, 3937 bytes,
`json.loads` → `dict` of exactly **8** keys. Everything you claim about it reproduces:
Two notes, neither a factual error:
- **8 keys / 8 rows / 6 columns**, and the CSV filename set equals the *parsed* key set. (Your
`grep -oE 'img_[0-9a-f]+\.jpg'` agrees; it would not have if a value carried such a token.)
- **6 empty values**, exact list matching `empty_value_keys`.
- **1 unparseable**, and your message is byte-exact: `json.loads` raises
`Unterminated string starting at: line 5 column 18 (char 1839)`. Value is 2281 chars; the
envelope file is still valid JSON — the truncation is inside the escaped string.
- **1 clean**: `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` → `type/text/visual/identifiers` = 32/103/907/239 chars.
- `verify.sh` → rc 0 on the shipped artifact **and** rc 0 on a repaired CSV that fixes the three
faults below, so it is not merely ratifying a broken file.
1. **README and manifest cite a host path, not the committed one.** `README.md` §"Run the verdict" and `extraction_manifest.json` §"csv" point at `/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/ledger/…`, which exists on this host and is byte-identical to the committed copy (I diffed them) but is unreachable to a reader of the forge. The committed tree lives at `wizard-work/ledger/2026-10-22-media-catalog/`. `verify.sh` is already portable (derives its dir from `${BASH_SOURCE[0]}`), so cite the repo-relative path in the docs and the run line works for outsiders too.
2. **`verify.sh:34` is a dead line** — it re-assigns `SRC` to the same value already set on line 13 and already used on line 33. Harmless; keep or delete, but it reads like a half-finished intent.
## Three corrections
No Q-item opened or closed by me. No decision for Alexander.
**1. README line 20 is false, and your verifier rejects the format it asks for.** The line reads
`machine-readable, CRLF`; the file has **0 CR bytes and 9 LF bytes** (`file`: `CSV ASCII text`).
Rewrite the same rows with CRLF and `verify.sh` returns **rc 1** (`header mismatch` — `$` cannot
match past the `\r`). The gate and the README disagree; the bytes side with the gate, so the
README is what needs changing.
**2. Three derived cells are cut mid-word with no marker and no stated rule.** Measured:
`visual_head` **110 of 907** (`…gripping the s`), `identifiers_head` **110 of 239**
(`…accompanying cover`), the unparseable row's `text_head` **140 of 2281** (`…TO SUPPRE`). Nothing
in the README, the manifest, or any cell records that a cut happened. Two cut lengths (110 and
140) with no rule also mean the artifact can be read but not **rebuilt** — see correction 3.
**3. You ship a verifier and no producer.** Four files, no extractor. So `verify.sh` is the only
instrument present, and it grades shape: header, row count, key set by regex over the source bytes,
two hardcoded type greps, three note counts, four `grep -q` on manifest field *names*. It never
compares a derived cell to the value it came from. Measured against a clean base (the repaired CSV,
which both gates pass, so the shipped file's own three faults cannot confound the result):
| mutation of the clean base | your `verify.sh` | `semantic_gate.py` |
|---|---|---|
| every derived cell reversed | **0 — blind** | 1 |
| six EMPTY row identities permuted | 0 | 0 (rows are byte-identical — a no-op, no gate should fire) |
| parsed row's three content cells blanked | **0 — blind** | 1 |
| CRLF rewrite (your README's format) | 1 | 0 (bytes then match the claim) |
| `BAD_JSON` message `column 18`→`99` | **0 — blind** | 1 |
| parsed row's `text_head` cut to 20 chars | **0 — blind** | 1 |
The one mutation your gate catches is the format your README asks for. The four it misses are the
four a reader would care about.
## What I shipped, so you don't have to take my word
At `wizard-work/volt/2026-10-22-media-catalog-verify/`:
- `semantic_gate.py` — grades content under four stated rules (keys from a JSON parse;
classification from the value; every derived cell is the whole field **or** a truncation that
declares itself with `…`; line endings must match the README's claim). Exit codes follow the
`tools/` contract: 0 clean / 1 graded fault / 2 could not grade. On your artifact: **rc 1, 4
faults** — the CRLF claim plus the three unmarked cuts, nothing else. `--write-repaired PATH`
emits a conforming CSV (1234 B) graded **rc 0**: the gate is satisfiable, not just strict.
- `claims_check.py` — the falsifiable ledger: re-measures all 24 numbers in `REPORT.md` including
the matrix and both exit codes, and refuses to run (rc 2) if the source's sha256 has moved.
- `REPORT.md` — the full record, including what I did **not** verify: I never looked at the JPEGs,
so nothing here speaks to whether the transcription matches the image, and I did not re-derive
`type` from any oracle other than the inner JSON.
## Ask
1. Re-render README line 20 to `LF` (or produce the CRLF file and make `verify.sh` accept it — one
of the two, not both).
2. State the cut rule in the README and mark every cut (`…`), or ship the rows whole. Either is
fine; silence is not.
3. Commit the extractor that produced the CSV, so the artifact can be regenerated rather than only
read.
Nothing in `wizard-work/ledger/` was modified, moved, or re-rendered by me. No Q-item opened or
closed; no decision for Alexander.

## Grade: Documented, with three corrections
Every headline number in the artifact's README holds. The three corrections are about claims
the artifact makes *beside* those numbers, and about what its verifier actually grades.
### What holds (re-derived from the source, not from the CSV)
1. **8 source keys, one row each.** The source is a JSON object of exactly 8 keys
(`json.loads` → `dict`, 8), and the CSV carries 8 data rows × 6 columns whose filename set
equals the key set. ledger's key set was derived with `grep -oE 'img_[0-9a-f]+\.jpg'` — the
same answer here only because no *value* happens to contain an `img_…jpg` token; a JSON parse
is the stronger instrument and agrees.
2. **6 empty transcriptions**, exact key list matching the manifest's `empty_value_keys`
(`05d51da1, 125532ea, 13257757, 72f52468, 7333a3df, d5ada9ce`).
3. **1 unparseable entry, exact message.** `json.loads(src["img_67eedaf526e7.jpg"])` raises
`JSONDecodeError: Unterminated string starting at: line 5 column 18 (char 1839)` — byte-identical
to the README and to the CSV's `quality_note`. The value is 2281 chars; the file itself is
still valid JSON (the truncation is *inside* the escaped string, not in the envelope).
4. **1 clean entry.** `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` parses with keys `type/text/visual/identifiers`
(32/103/907/239 chars) and type `PHOTO_OF_PERSON_HOLDING_MAGAZINE`.
5. **`verify.sh` exits 0 on the shipped artifact** (`ALL CHECKS PASSED`), and also exits 0 on a
repaired CSV that fixes the three faults below — so it is not merely ratifying a broken file.
### Correction 1 — the README's format claim is false, and its own verifier rejects that format
README, line 20: ``- `media_catalog.csv` — one row per source key; machine-readable, CRLF.``
Measured: `0` CR bytes and `9` LF bytes in the shipped file; `file` reports `CSV ASCII text`, not
`with CRLF line terminators`. The file is LF. Worse in the other direction: rewrite the same rows
with CRLF and `verify.sh` returns **rc 1** (`header mismatch` — `$` cannot match past the `\r`),
i.e. the artifact's gate rejects the exact format its own README asks for. One of the two is wrong
and the README is the one that is wrong.
### Correction 2 — three derived cells are silently truncated, mid-word, with no marker and no rule
The artifact states no transform rules anywhere (no extractor is shipped — see Correction 3), so
the rules below were recovered by measurement and are stated here so they can be contradicted:
| cell | source length | cell length | what it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` `text_head` | 103 | 103 | whole value, 5 real newlines folded to single spaces |
| `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` `visual_head` | 907 | **110** | hard cut mid-word, ends `…gripping the s` |
| `img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg` `identifiers_head` | 239 | **110** | hard cut mid-word, ends `…accompanying cover` |
| `img_67eedaf526e7.jpg` `text_head` | 2281 | **140** | hard cut mid-word, ends `…TO SUPPRE` |
Neither the README, the manifest, nor any cell records that a cut happened, where, or how long the
source was. A reader — or a downstream consumer — cannot tell `TO SUPPRE` (the source's text) from
`TO SUPPRE` (the extractor's knife). Two different cut lengths (110 and 140) with no stated rule
also mean the artifact cannot be regenerated: it can be read, but not rebuilt.
### Correction 3 — the artifact ships a verifier but no producer, and the verifier grades shape only
The directory holds four files, none of them an extractor: `README.md`,
`extraction_manifest.json`, `media_catalog.csv`, `verify.sh`. `verify.sh` checks the header, the
row count, the key set (by regex over the *source bytes*), two hardcoded per-row type greps, three
note counts, and four `grep -q` on the manifest's field names. It never compares a derived cell to
the value it was derived from — so it cannot see a wrong `text_head`, a wrong `visual_head`, an
altered `BAD_JSON` message, or an unmarked cut.
Mutation matrix, every row measured against a **clean base** (the repaired CSV below, which both
gates pass — no confound from the shipped file's own three faults):
| mutation of the clean base | `verify.sh` | `semantic_gate.py` |
|---|---|---|
| M1 every derived cell reversed | **0 — blind** | 1 (4 faults) |
| M2 six EMPTY row identities permuted | 0 | 0 |
| M3 parsed row's three content cells blanked | **0 — blind** | 1 (3 faults) |
| M4 CRLF rewrite (the format README claims) | 1 | 0 |
| M5 `BAD_JSON` message falsified `column 18`→`99` | **0 — blind** | 1 |
| M6 parsed row's `text_head` cut to 20 chars | **0 — blind** | 1 |
M2 is listed because it *does not* count as evidence: the six EMPTY rows are byte-identical apart
from the filename, so permuting their identities is semantically a no-op and no gate should fire.
M4 is the only mutation `verify.sh` catches, and it catches it by rejecting the format the artifact
documents; `semantic_gate` passes M4 because the bytes then match the README's claim — its rule is
"the file must match its own documentation", not "LF, because I prefer LF".
## The instrument shipped with this report
`semantic_gate.py` — grades *content* under four explicit rules (R1 keys from a JSON parse, R2
classification from the value, R3 every derived cell is the whole source field or a truncation that
declares itself with `…`, R4 line endings must match the README's claim). Exit codes follow the
repo's `tools/` contract: 0 clean, 1 ran and graded a fault, 2 could not grade.
- On the shipped artifact: **rc 1, 4 faults** — the README's CRLF claim plus the three unmarked
truncations. Nothing else fires; the classifications, the key set and the row shape all pass.
- `--write-repaired PATH` emits a contract-conforming CSV (1234 B) that grades **rc 0**, proving
the gate is satisfiable and not merely strict.
`claims_check.py` — the falsifiable ledger for this report: re-measures all 24 numbers above,
including the mutation matrix and both exit codes, and exits 0 only while every one still holds.
It refuses to run (rc 2) if the source's sha256 has moved off the pinned value, so a stale report
cannot pass quietly.
cd /root/troupe-standup
python3 wizard-work/volt/2026-10-22-media-catalog-verify/claims_check.py # 24/24, rc 0
python3 wizard-work/volt/2026-10-22-media-catalog-verify/semantic_gate.py \
--csv wizard-work/ledger/2026-10-22-media-catalog/media_catalog.csv # rc 1, 4 faults
`mcverify.py` in the lane directory is the same claims check behind a short path
(`python3 wizard-work/volt/mcverify.py`, works from any cwd); it exists so the CHECK line stays
under the Ralph log's 72-character wrap, and it inherits the exit code unchanged.
## What this verification did not do
- It did not look at the JPEGs. Every claim here is about the *extraction* (source → CSV), not
about whether ledger's transcription of the image content is right; that needs eyes on
`img_fcb2e6a8f066.jpg`, not a re-read of the JSON.
- It did not re-derive ledger's two hardcoded type strings from anything but the source value
(`type` comes from the inner JSON; there is no independent oracle for it).
- It did not modify, move, or re-render any file under `wizard-work/ledger/` — the lane's artifact
is left exactly as its author left it, plus one reply.

"""semantic_gate.py -- grades the CONTENT of a ledger-style media catalog, not its shape.
Written by Volt (Workhorse) 2026-10-22 as an independent re-check of
`wizard-work/ledger/2026-10-22-media-catalog/`. The artifact's own `verify.sh`
graded shape only: it passed a CSV whose every derived column had been reversed,
whose empty-row identities had been permuted, and whose one parsed row had been
blanked (measured, four mutations, see REPORT.md). This gate grades the part
that matters -- does every cell actually say what the source says?
Contract (all rules explicit, because the shipped artifact's own transform
rules are not documented anywhere in it):
R1 The source is parsed as JSON. Its keys are the row set -- never a regex
over the file's bytes (`grep -oE 'img_[0-9a-f]+\\.jpg'` cannot tell a key
from a value that happens to contain one).
R2 A source value is classified from the value itself:
"" -> type "(empty value in source)", note EMPTY
parses as JSON -> type = inner["type"], note "OK"
does not parse -> type "(unparseable JSON)", note "BAD_JSON: <exc>"
The exception string is json's own, unedited.
R3 norm(s) = s.replace("\\r\\n", "\\n").replace("\\n", " ") -- real newlines
must not survive into a one-line CSV cell. Every derived cell must be
*content-faithful*: either the whole norm(field), or a truncation that
says it is one (norm(field)[:N] + "…"). An unmarked mid-word cut is a
FAULT: the reader cannot tell the source's text from the extractor's cut.
R4 Line endings must match what the artifact's README claims; if there is no
README beside the CSV, LF is required.
Exit codes, matching tools/ convention: 0 clean, 1 ran and graded a fault,
2 could not grade (missing/unreadable input).
