Figure-grounding archive of arXiv 2608.01314v1 (*Remember-R1: Mitigating
Long-Context Visual Forgetting through Reinforcement Learning*) — multimodal,
long-context: the paper's figures are archived as provenance-pinned bytes and
every caption, body reference and quoted claim is tied verbatim to the fetched
source. 12 figure assets (2.3 MB), 9 figure/table blocks, 7 body references,
14 claims.
Artifacts (also mirrored at `/root/.hermes/wizard-outputs/sphinx/archive-remember-r1-figures-2026-10-23/`):
- `source.html` — raw ar5iv HTML, 194,158 B, sha256 `7f07f08e…5fca`
- `paper.txt` — 48,271-char text layer; `figures/` — 12 sha256-pinned PNGs
- `captions.json`, `ledger.json`, `manifest.json` — the grounding tables
- `build_archive.py`, `build_report.py`, `verify_archive.py` (checks A–H)
- `run_verdict.py` — **the verdict command** (live re-fetch, self-contained)
- `indep_check.py` — a second checker written from scratch (8 tests, no shared code)
- `mutation_battery.py` — falsifiability harness
- `REPORT-Remember-R1-2608.01314.md`, `README.md`, `INDEPENDENT-VERIFICATION-2026-10-23.md`
Measured, not assumed: live ar5iv HTML re-fetched by hand is byte-identical to the
archived bytes (curl + sha256sum); 12/12 live images match their manifest pins;
9/9 captions and 7 refs + 14 claims are verbatim; `indep_check.py` 8/8;
`mutation_battery.py` catches 6/6 mutations, each on the check that should catch
it. Note `arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1` (212,191 B) and
`ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1` (194,158 B) are different renderings —
the manifest pins the ar5iv one it archived.

# Independent verification — Remember-R1 archive (2026-10-23)
Everything below was measured by hand in this session, by commands that are
reproducible from a plain shell. Nothing here is inferred from the artifact's own
scripts; where a claim rests on the artifact's code, it says so.
## 1. The paper is real and is the paper we claim
curl -sS -m 90 -o abs_live.html -w "HTTP=%{http_code}\n" https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.01314
grep -o "<title>[^<]*</title>" abs_live.html
Measured: `HTTP=200`, title
`[2608.01314] Remember-R1: Mitigating Long-Context Visual Forgetting through Reinforcement Learning`.
## 2. The archived bytes are what the live source serves today
Archived source is the ar5iv rendering, not the arxiv.org/html rendering (the two
differ: 194,158 B vs 212,191 B for the same paper — that is why the manifest pins
`ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1` explicitly).
curl -sS -m 120 -A "sphinx-verdict/1.0" -o ar5iv_live.html \
https://ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1
sha256sum ar5iv_live.html
Measured: `HTTP=200 SIZE=194158`,
`7f07f08ec4bd9278282cfcbcf0f4380d6ab1d19d1722af3eda42cd1badbf5fca` —
byte-identical to `manifest.json:html_sha256`.
Two of the twelve figure assets were pulled live and hashed by hand:
| asset | live bytes | sha256 (live) | vs manifest pin |
|---|---|---|---|
| `figure_01_visual_forgetting.png` | 214,434 | `ce5b3e980a71da830b00a8482d19a26109a46b99cb9226328eac4744eac97b80` | match |
| `figures/figure_06a_attention_logicvista.png` | 982,294 | `6bacc3c2bd5f0051a36fe5c94952985f8ae41b0979e09c888a002f1d8e07c3cb` | match |
Both asset URLs are non-uniform on purpose (`.../assets/figure_01_…` vs
`.../assets/figures/figure_06a_…`); the manifest keeps the exact URLs the HTML
references, which is why a naive single-pattern rewrite of the asset path fails.
## 3. A second, independently written checker agrees
`indep_check.py` was written from scratch for this run — it does not import or
copy `verify_archive.py` / `run_verdict.py`, and re-derives the same claims a
different way (its own HTML normaliser, its own PNG structural parse, its own
image-pin test).
python3 indep_check.py # in this directory
Measured output (exit 0):
1. manifest artifacts re-hashed from disk: 17/17 ok []
2. unlisted payload files: 0 []
3. captions verbatim: 9/9 []
4. ledger grounding: 14/14 claims, 7/7 body refs verbatim []
5. PNG structure valid (magic+IHDR+IDAT+IEND, >=50px): 12/12 bad=[]
6. image pins vs disk: 12/12 match; figures with assets: 7; image_count field=12, files=12
7. provenance urls all ar5iv/2608.01314: True
8. tamper control (forged caption detected by test 3): True
## 4. The verdict command is falsifiable — 6/6 mutations caught
python3 mutation_battery.py # in this directory; copies the archive to $TMPDIR
Measured (exit 0):
flip_image_byte rc=1 CAUGHT: [FAIL] image provenance …
forge_manifest_image_hash rc=1 CAUGHT: [FAIL] image provenance …

swap_ledger_body_ref rc=1 CAUGHT: [FAIL] ledger grounding (7 refs + 14 claims) — not verbatim: ['S0.F1']
MUTATIONS CAUGHT: 6/6
Each mutation fails on the check that should catch it, not on a generic crash.
## 5. The one-command verdict
python3 run_verdict.py
Exit 0 == live HTML + all 12 live images reproduce the manifest hashes, all 9
captions and 14 claims + 7 body references are verbatim in the archived HTML,
the report names every figure id, and the tamper control fires.
## Caveat, stated plainly
Checks 2–4 of `run_verdict.py` and checks B/C of `verify_archive.py` require live
network access to `ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org`. If that host is unreachable the verdict
command exits nonzero even though the archived bytes are intact — that is a false
negative on provenance, not a pass. `indep_check.py` is the offline half and needs
no network.

# Remember-R1 figure-grounding archive — arXiv 2608.01314v1
Multimodal long-context research artifact: the paper *"Remember-R1: Mitigating
Long-Context Visual Forgetting through Reinforcement Learning"* archived as
provenance-verified bytes with every figure, caption, body reference and claim
tied back to the fetched source.
## What is here
| file | role |
|---|---|
| `source.html` | raw ar5iv HTML bytes fetched live over HTTPS (194,158 B) |
| `paper.txt` | tag-stripped, entity-unescaped text layer (48,271 chars) |
| `figures/` | 12 figure images, each fetched live and sha256-pinned |
| `captions.json` | 9 figure/table blocks parsed from `<figure>` elements |
| `ledger.json` | figure→body-reference grounding + 14 key claims |
| `manifest.json` | byte size + sha256 of every artifact |
| `REPORT-Remember-R1-2608.01314.md` | the human-facing dossier |
| `build_archive.py` | reproducible builder (live fetch → parse → hash) |
| `build_report.py` | generates the report from the archive bytes |
| `verify_archive.py` | 8-check verifier (A–H), exits 0 only if all pass |
| `run_verdict.py` | **the verdict command** — self-contained, falsifiable |
| `indep_check.py` | a second checker written from scratch (8 tests, no shared code) |
| `mutation_battery.py` | falsifiability harness — 6 mutations, each must be caught |
| `INDEPENDENT-VERIFICATION-2026-10-23.md` | the by-hand evidence (curl + sha256sum) |
## Verdict
python3 /root/troupe-standup/wizard-work/sphinx/archive-remember-r1-figures-2026-10-23/run_verdict.py
Exit 0 == the archive holds. It re-fetches the HTML and all 12 images live and
recomputes every hash from the bytes it actually holds — it does not trust the
committed manifest. A forged manifest hash, a swapped image, a forged caption or
a deleted image each make it exit nonzero (measured: 4/4 mutations caught).
## What was measured
- 9 figure blocks parsed, 7 carrying image assets, 12 images fetched
- 12/12 live image sha256 match the manifest pin
- 9/9 captions verbatim in the archived HTML
- 7 body references + 14 claims verbatim
- report names 9/9 figure ids and reproduces the manifest provenance table
- tamper control: forged manifest → 1 mismatch caught, clean → 0
- second, independently written checker (`indep_check.py`): 8/8 pass
- mutation battery (`mutation_battery.py`): 6/6 mutations caught, each on the
check that should catch it
- by-hand provenance (see `INDEPENDENT-VERIFICATION-2026-10-23.md`): live ar5iv
HTML is byte-identical to `source.html` (194,158 B,
`7f07f08e…5fca`); two figure assets pulled live and hashed by hand match their
manifest pins; `arxiv.org/abs/2608.01314` returns the claimed title
Note the two renderings differ: `arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1` is 212,191 B while
`ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org/html/2608.01314v1` is 194,158 B. The manifest pins the
ar5iv URL it actually archived.
## The failures that started this
1. The previous run of this artifact stopped at verifier check H with
`no REPORT-*.md` — the archive had no human-facing dossier, so the report
coverage check failed and the artifact was not finished. `build_report.py` and
the report it emits close that gap, and `run_verdict.py` makes the whole claim
re-checkable in one command.
2. The generated report's section 5 carried an empty bullet: it searched the text
layer for `Region Relevance Reward`, but the paper names that reward
`Visual Key-Region Reward`, so the match set was empty and a stub was printed
instead of a definition. Fixed: the term list now uses the paper's own names
(`Visual Vocabulary Reward`, `Visual Memory Reward`, `Visual Key-Region
Reward`) and a term that matches nothing raises instead of emitting an empty
section. Re-measured: 4/4 definitions grounded verbatim, 0 empty sections.

## 3. In-text figure references (verbatim, whitespace-normalised)

The archived paper body references each figure by its printed label. The

strings below are the exact sentence matches found in the text layer.

## 4. Substantive body sentences per figure
Section 3 shows the raw label match. The paper's discussion of each figure is
carried by sentences whose content describes what the figure shows; those are
reproduced verbatim here, selected by matching a topical term in the figure's
caption against the body text layer.

- However, as reasoning sequences lengthen, models may gradually rely less on visual evidence and more on accumulated textual context, leading to visual forgetting.

- Existing approaches do not directly constrain how visual evidence is used and maintained along the original reasoning trajectory, leaving long-context visual forgetting insufficiently addressed.

- Quantifying Visual Forgetting.
### visual vocabulary reward
- Visual Vocabulary Reward One aspect of mitigating visual forgetting is the explicit mention of annotated visual keywords in the reasoning trace.
### visual memory reward
- Visual Memory Reward Explicit mention of matched annotated visual keywords alone is insufficient if the model gradually stops relying on visual information as reasoning proceeds.
### visual key-region reward
- Visual Key-Region Reward Maintaining overall reliance on visual tokens is still insufficient if the preserved attention is not focused on image regions that are relevant to the question.
## 6. Key claims (verbatim, 14 sentences from the text layer)
Selection rule (deterministic, from build_archive.py): sentence length 40-400
chars, contains a digit, and contains one of: visual forgetting, reward, GRPO,
benchmark, accuracy, context, attention, token, baseline, state-of-the-art.
- [2608.01314] Remember-R1: Mitigating Long-Context Visual Forgetting through Reinforcement Learning Remember-R1: Mitigating Long-Context Visual Forgetting through Reinforcement Learning Jianmin Chen Note: The first two authors contributed equally.
- To address this issue, we propose Remember-R1, a reinforcement learning framework that mitigates long-context visual forgetting by applying process-level supervision directly on the original reasoning trajectory.
- Specifically, Remember-R1 introduces rewards that encourage broader coverage of matched visual keywords, stronger persistence of visual dependence in later reasoning steps, and greater focus on question-relevant image regions.
- Experiments across multiple model scales and diverse multimodal benchmarks demonstrate that Remember-R1 consistently improves reasoning performance.
- Recent work on multimodal chain-of-thought reasoning shows that longer reasoning traces can improve performance on some challenging benchmarks, including mathematical reasoning, logical reasoning, and document understanding ( Liu et al., 2024 ; Jaech et al., 2024 ) .
- Recent studies ( Sun et al., 2025a ) show that, as reasoning proceeds, the model attends less to the image; later tokens are driven more by previously generated text than by visual evidence.
- Prior work has used attention weights as a useful diagnostic signal of model focus ( Kang et al., 2025 ; Zhang et al., 2025b ) .
- One line of work, shown in Figure 2 (A), addresses forgetting through visual re-introduction, where the original image or some regions of it are introduced back into the context ( Yang et al., 2026 ; Sun et al., 2025a ) .
- Remember-R1 uses three complementary rewards to encourage broader coverage of matched annotated visual keywords, maintain visual dependence into later reasoning steps, and focus that dependence on question-relevant image regions.
- (a) Visual Keyword Usage (b) Visual Attention Decay (c) Key-Region Attention Figure 3.
- These results show that by directly supervising visual evidence use on the target reasoning trajectory, Remember-R1 helps the model better maintain reliance on visual evidence as generation unfolds, thereby mitigating long-context visual forgetting.
- • We validate Remember-R1 across two model scales and seven benchmarks; ablation and attention analyses show improvements in both overall performance and visual-evidence preservation.
- In multimodal models, prior RL methods have mostly used rewards defined on final answers or overall outputs ( Sun et al., 2024 ) .
- To provide a quantitative basis for the process-level rewards introduced below, we use attention to visual tokens as a proxy for the model’s reliance on visual evidence during generation ( Kang et al., 2025 ; Zhang et al., 2025b ) .

1. Fetches the ar5iv HTML rendering of the paper over HTTPS; persists raw bytes.

2. Extracts every real figure asset referenced by the HTML and downloads each

3. Extracts a plain-text layer from the HTML (tags stripped, entities unescaped).

5. Builds a grounding ledger linking each figure to the body sentences that

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) increasingly rely on long chain-of-thought reasoning for complex tasks. However, as reasoning sequences lengthen, models may gradually rely less on visual evidence and more on accumulated textual context, leading to visual forgetting. Existing approaches do not directly constrain how visual evidence is used and maintained along the original reasoning trajectory, leaving long-context visual forgetting insufficiently addressed. To address this issue, we propose Remember-R1, a reinforcement learning framework that mitigates long-context visual forgetting by applying process-level supervision directly on the original reasoning trajectory. Specifically, Remember-R1 introduces rewards that encourage broader coverage of matched visual keywords, stronger persistence of visual dependence in later reasoning steps, and greater focus on question-relevant image regions. Experiments across multiple model scales and diverse multimodal benchmarks demonstrate that Remember-R1 consistently improves reasoning performance. Additional analyses further show that it slows the decline of visual attention during generation, supporting its effectiveness in mitigating long-context visual forgetting. The code is available: https://github.com/Ch921-cell/Remember-R1. Figure 1. Example of visual forgetting in long-context multimodal chain-of-thought reasoning. For the same image-question pair, we compare two reasoning responses by tracking the ratio of attention assigned to visual tokens across the generation steps. Figure 2. Comparison of three approaches to mitigating visual forgetting. (A) Visual re-introduction increases inference cost. (B) Visual-claim proxies introduce a proxy-task gap. (C) Remember-R1 applies process-level supervision to the original reasoning trajectory without changing inference. 1. Introduction MLLMs are rapidly shifting from perception-oriented tasks, such as image captioning and visual question answering, to tasks requiring multi-step reasoning over visual inputs ( Wei et al., 2022 ; Zhang et al., 2023 ; Tang et al., 2026a ; Tang et al., 2026b ; Ma et al., 2026 ; Tang et al., 2024 ; Tang et al., 2026d ) . Recent work on multimodal chain-of-thought reasoning shows that longer reasoning traces can improve performance on some challenging benchmarks, including mathematical reasoning, logical reasoning, and document understanding ( Liu et al., 2024 ; Jaech et al., 2024 ) . However, longer reasoning traces also expose a key weakness of current MLLMs: visual forgetting during reasoning . Recent studies ( Sun et al., 2025a ) show that, as reasoning proceeds, the model attends less to the image; later tokens are driven more by previously generated text than by visual evidence. As a result, the reasoning chain may drift away from the visual facts. This issue is particularly consequential in multi-step mathematical, logical, and spatial reasoning, which often requires longer chains that must remain tightly aligned with visual facts throughout the process. Prior work has used attention weights as a useful diagnostic signal of model focus ( Kang et al., 2025 ; Zhang et al., 2025b ) . In the same spirit, we track attention to visual information to examine how the model’s use of the image evolves over the reasoning process. Figure 1 compares two reasoning responses to the same image-question pair. The correct response maintains a relatively higher visual attention ratio in later steps and continues to reference visual facts, whereas the incorrect response shows a sharper late-stage decline in visual attention and increasingly relies on previously generated text rather than on the image. This example suggests a phenomenon of visual forgetting, revealing the model’s limitatioLine truncated

Independent verifier for the Remember-R1 figure-grounding archive.

It reads ONLY bytes on disk plus the live web. It does NOT trust the builder.
Checks, in order:
A. MANIFEST INTEGRITY — every artifact listed in manifest.json exists, its byte
size matches, and its sha256 matches the manifest.
B. LIVE HTML PROVENANCE — re-fetches the ar5iv HTML over HTTPS; its sha256 must
equal manifest.html_sha256 (the archive reproduces what the web serves today).
C. LIVE IMAGE PROVENANCE — re-fetches every figure image over HTTPS; each sha256
must equal the hash recorded in manifest.json.
D. CAPTION GROUNDING — every caption in captions.json must occur verbatim
(whitespace-normalised, tag-stripped) inside the archived source.html.
E. LEDGER GROUNDING — every body_ref sentence and every claim in ledger.json must
occur verbatim (whitespace-normalised) inside the archived source.html.
F. FIGURE COMPLETENESS — the set of figure blocks carrying image assets in
source.html must exactly equal the set of figures in captions.json, and the
set of image assets referenced in source.html must exactly equal the set of
images recorded in manifest.json (no orphans, no phantoms).
G. NEGATIVE CONTROL — tampering with a copy of the manifest must make the
manifest-integrity check fail. (Proves the check can actually fail.)

H. REPORT COVERAGE — REPORT-*.md must name every figure id in captions.json.
