# Check-in 2026-10-29 — Zephyrus Sparkborn
Screen: replies 146, 147, 148, 149, 150 and the 2026-10-28 interview, all read in full.
Q96 CLOSED at `f17c936` accepted with its qualifier; Q103/Q107 closures, the sentinel
grading, and Q119/Q120/Q122 (not my lanes) noted. Nothing in replies 147–150 asks me
anything except through Q117 and the interview questions, answered below.
## Did
### 1. Q117 LANDED — probe values are not recoveries
Commits `4955f2c` (implementation + queue DONE record + re-rendered index) and
`3a107d8` (reply-146 docstring pins, comments only). `wizard-work/zeph/q60_enforce.py`:
- `KNOWN_PROBE` table beside `KNOWN_FIXTURE`, holding Timmy's probe-C value built by
concatenation, so no literal for it exists in the source (`grep -c "beae0b1f-9f2c"`
over the file returns 0). The Q99 record that quotes the value is NOT edited; the
table declares its provenance, and the record stands as dated fact.
- The recovery leg skips probe values in both branches (general longer-string look
and the exhausted-stem full-value look), so a stem whose only in-tree longer
string is a probe value reads `UNRECOVERED-JUSTIFIED` with the value still in the tree.
- Cell 9 (Q96 exhausted-stem flip) reworked to a non-probe synthetic value under the
stem, because the probe-C value no longer counts as a recovery by design.
- New cell 11 `probe-value-not-a-recovery` (numbering note: Q117 was filed asking for
"a new cell (10)", but Q121 landed first and took that number, so the probe cell is
cell 11 and the done-means are unchanged): a tree holding the truncated stem plus
the probe value reads `UNRECOVERED-JUSTIFIED` with the gate green, and with the
table cleared the SAME tree flips to `RECOVERED-IN-TREE` at its site, table restored
afterwards — so the cell is not vacuous.
- `wizard-work/zeph/test_q60_absence.py` (volt's Q121 grader) count pin moved 10 → 11
(docstring line and assertion only; the pin's purpose is unchanged), because the
selftest now has 11 cells. `tools/check_lint.py --check` SOUND on the module.
Verification, all this host:
| reading | result |
|---|---|
| `--selftest`, fresh clone at `4955f2c` | 11 cells passed, 0 failed, rc 0 |
| `--selftest`, committed blob extracted at `3a107d8` | 11 cells passed, 0 failed, rc 0 |
| standalone tree, with table | `TOKEN beae0b1f: UNRECOVERED-JUSTIFIED`, gate green |
| same standalone tree, table cleared | `TOKEN beae0b1f: RECOVERED-IN-TREE beae0b1f-9f2c-4d1e-8a77-3c5b6e9d0a11 at n.md`, gate green |
| full tree at `4955f2c` | `OCC=132 DISTINCT=24 FILES=40`, `VERDICT=PASS`, rc 0, all three `beae0b1f` stems `UNRECOVERED-JUSTIFIED`, zero FAIL lines |
| anonymous API blob, `q60_enforce.py` at `4955f2c` | sha `90da7c4309774750dec9442b428adb8ec309e172`, 24,181 B, matches clone `hash-object` and `ls-tree` |
| anonymous API blob, `q60_enforce.py` at `3a107d8` | sha `7a78f8504c2a4542a1c9124aa881d8cfd7d96bfe`, 24,810 B, matches `ls-tree` and the extracted blob |
| `test_q60_absence.py` | 5 tests OK |
Two of my own API misses, named so they are not read as missing objects: a contents
GET with the short hash `4955f2c` returned 404, and a second GET with a wrong full
suffix (I reused the previous commit's tail) also returned 404. Both were my URL
forms; the full SHAs above resolve.
### 2. Two self-inflicted reds, both cleaned, neither committed
(a) My import-based standalone test left `wizard-work/zeph/__pycache__/` in the tree,
and cell 7 (self-scan over its own directory, untracked files included) went red on
it: the compiled `.pyc` carries the cell strings, including a `deadbeef` token and a
complete-but-wrong value. Removed the directory, selftest green again, and `ls-tree`
at `3a107d8` shows only the two zeph files — nothing stray committed. Observation,
not an item: cell 7 is sensitive to stray files in its own directory, so any future
import-based test of this module must run from a copy, not in the lane directory.
(b) My two fresh-clone verifications filled `/tmp` (512M tmpfs, two clones ≈ 290M +
223M) and broke a third clone's checkout. Both removed; `/tmp` back to ~1%. Lesson
recorded: verification clones go under the workspace, or get deleted right after use.
### 3. Q121 — closed by another hand this morning, not reworked
The queue carries Q121 DONE (measured at `5623170`); my cell-11 work builds on its
per-entry repair and updates its grader's count pin accordingly. No conflict, no
second repair.
### 4. Q116 — sibling career tick landed the correction; close call is Timmy's
`career-lane/daily-2026-10-29.md` (`db7ad63`) plus `career-lane/apply-queue-2026-10-29.md`
(`7ff8a90`) carry the amended done-means: mechanism named, superseded lines named by
file and line, no committed file edited. I read both; I did not edit the tick file
(append-only, and it is the sibling lane's artifact). One wording flag, not a verdict
change: the daily's §7 corrections log says "Going forward: 31 live / 4 closed" while
its §1.4/§3 say 33 live / Turing 15. The apply-queue's line 377 reconciles them (31
was the pre-verification count; 33 follows the verification of `wp680rglf0` +
`JPQ-cmFZSA`), so §7 reads as the pre-verification count. Worth one wording line
from whoever owns that file; the count itself is not in dispute.
## Interview answers (2026-10-28 interview, Q7/Q8/Q9)
**Q7.** (a) When I wrote `"".join(KNOWN_FIXTURE.values())`, I did not consider n > 1.
The join's purpose was keeping the literal out of the source, and with one entry
join == value, so the size question never surfaced until your mutant. That is an
assumption I did not examine, stated plainly. (b) The cell I would bet least on is
cell 7, the self-scan: it stays green for the fixture class by design (prints
TEST-FIXTURE), and the property it looks like it proves — no literal in the source —
is cell 8's, not its. The same shape bit once already: a table change made cell 8
green-while-wrong. (c) If a second fixture is ever needed, the table grows: the Q121
repair proves growth is now safe, and refusing to grow would push the next value
into an untested corner.
**Q8.** An unknown full value is invisible to every leg, and that is by design for
Q60's class — truncated identifiers — but the design was implicit, so here is the
sentence for the record: this tool is not a full-value census and claims nothing
about uncatalogued full values. The leg I trust least is the recovery leg, and I
agree with your reason: string presence is not provenance, and §3 of the interview
is the proof. Building a true provenance leg would need an attestation source the
tool cannot have (authorship and date per occurrence, from outside the tree), so the
Q117 marking rule — printed, masked, never a recovery — is the right ceiling, not a
stopgap.
**Q9.** The step: every tick I run the full-tree check at the landing head and read
its TOKEN lines before writing a verdict — that step runs every tick. The catch
itself was attention to the site column (WORK-QUEUE.md) while reading the recovery
line, not a separate scan. The systematic version is Q117's table: a probe value now
fails to recover by construction, so the next circular reading cannot happen even
when attention lapses. What in my lane has never been falsified: the KNOWN_EXTERNAL
rows (reply 100 §4, inherited, never re-fetched by my hand — you did not re-test
them either, per the interview's §0), and the API-GET comparison step itself (I
verify sha equality but never ran a negative control on the comparison). One small
pipe change, which I will actually do: a probe value gets a KNOWN_PROBE row in the
same commit that first quotes it. This one predates the rule only because the value
predates it.
## Blocked on
Nothing. Q117 and Q116 closes are Timmy's calls; no zeph-lane item remains open
after the Q117/Q121 DONE records (close calls pending), and nothing here needs
Alexander — items 31/33/34 stand as already raised, not re-raised.
## Next
Await Timmy's verification replies. Next tick takes the top unclaimed queue item or
answers replies, whichever the queue shows. Standing offer: independent re-verification
of other lanes' landings on request, with commands and outputs, not summaries.
## Ask
1. Q117 — close at `4955f2c` (plus the `3a107d8` docstring pins)?
2. Q116 — close on the sibling tick `db7ad63`, with the §7 count-wording note above?
3. Does cell 7's stray-file sensitivity (my §2a) want an item, or does it stay a
lane-hygiene note?
