# gate_blame.py DRY refactor verification (forge lane: Refactor)
## The shipped artifact
`tools/gate_blame.py` — the "which landing turned a gate leg red?" timeline tool.
Its `--selftest` (21 cells across fixtures A-E plus refusals and portability)
installs `checkin_check.py` into five fixture repos so `verify.py` grades each
fixture by its own tree.
## The smell (what the refactor fixes)
The selftest's fixture-setup section hand-duplicated the same two-line
`shutil.copy` block five times — once per fixture (A through E):
```python
shutil.copy(os.path.join(here, "checkin_check.py"),
os.path.join(<base>, "tools", "checkin_check.py"))
```
Five identical copies of one statement. Each new fixture is one more freehand
copy away from drifting. The statement is self-contained (`here` resolves from
`__file__`), making it a safe extraction target.
## The refactor (working tree, uncommitted)
A single module-level helper replaces all five inlined blocks:
```python
def _install_checkin_check(base):
here = os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))
shutil.copy(os.path.join(here, "checkin_check.py"),
os.path.join(base, "tools", "checkin_check.py"))
```
Each of the five hand-duplicated 2-line blocks is replaced by one call:
`_install_checkin_check(<base>)`. Same source file, same destination, same
bytes on disk.
## ORIGINAL vs REFACTORED
- ORIGINAL = `git show HEAD:tools/gate_blame.py` (the committed pre-refactor source).
Anchored on HEAD because the refactor is uncommitted; this pin is robust to
any number of commits landing before the run.
- REFACTORED = working tree.
## Verifier output (6 checks, all pass, exit 0)
```
[ok ] [1] selftest: original (HEAD) 21/21 rc 0
[ok ] [2] selftest: refactored (working tree) 21/21 rc 0
[ok ] [3] selftest: stdout BYTE-IDENTICAL (original == refactored)
[ok ] [4] code-level: refactored HAS the helper; original has none
[ok ] [5] code-level: refactored has 0 inlined sites; original has 5
[ok ] [6] non-vacuity: live run produced a real 21-cell census
verify: 6 checks, 6 passed, 0 failed
```
## Legs
- [1-2] **selftest parity.** Both original (HEAD) and refactored (working tree)
pass 21/21 cells with rc 0. The selftest is the comprehensive equivalence
surface: it exercises FLIP (PASS->FAULT), stable-red, CHANGED-not-FLIP,
UNGRADABLE windows, refusals (--range 0, not-a-git-tree, unknown leg), the
lone-copy `--help` portability cell, JSON shape, subdirectory resolution, and
worktree-cleanup residue — all 21 cells across fixtures A-E.
- [3] **byte-identical stdout.** Every character of both selftests matches —
proving no cell's verdict, detail line, or formatted output changed.
- [4-5] **non-faculty code-level checks.** The helper definition
(`def _install_checkin_check(base):`) exists only in the refactored source;
the five inlined call sites (keyed on `a..e` base variables) exist only in
the original. Together [4]+[5] prove the smell genuinely existed and was
genuinely removed — not a no-op refactor.
- [6] **non-vacuity.** The live run produced a real 21-cell census, not a stub.
## Non-tautology proof
Against the pinned original (HEAD), the refactor markers are absent:
`def _install_checkin_check` is NOT in HEAD, and the five
`os.path.join(<base>, "tools", "checkin_check.py")` sites ARE in HEAD but are
absent in the refactored source. The `here`-token inside the helper resolves
from `__file__` at call time, so it behaves identically whether inlined or
extracted.
## Artifacts

"""verify_gate_blame_dry_refactor.py
Equivalence proof for a behavior-preserving DRY refactor in tools/gate_blame.py
(forge lane: Refactor).
THE SMELL
gate_blame.py's selftest installs checkin_check.py into five fixture repos
(fixtures A-E) with the SAME two-line shutil.copy, hand-duplicated five times:
shutil.copy(os.path.join(here, "checkin_check.py"),
os.path.join(<base>, "tools", "checkin_check.py"))
Five identical copies of one statement is the canonical DRY smell, and each new
fixture is one more freehand copy away from drifting. The `here` token ties the
copy to this module's own __file__, so the statement is fully self-contained
and a safe extraction target.
THE REFACTOR (committed? NO -- working tree only)
A single module-level helper, still self-contained (resolves `here` from
__file__, so it survives the lone-copy portability cell too):
def _install_checkin_check(base):
here = os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))
shutil.copy(os.path.join(here, "checkin_check.py"),
os.path.join(base, "tools", "checkin_check.py"))
Each of the five hand-duplicated 2-line blocks is replaced by one call:
_install_checkin_check(<base>)
Same source, same destination, same bytes on disk -> identical fixture trees.
WHAT THIS VERIFIER PROVES
The refactor is behavior-preserving, on a faithful copy of each version run in
an isolated sandbox (its own tools/ dir, so `here` resolves to the sandbox and
the fixture setups copy the sandbox's checkin_check.py + the sandbox's
gate_blame.py for the lone-copy cell -- no host paths leak in).
LEGS
[1] selftest: original (HEAD) passes 21/21, rc 0
[2] selftest: refactored (working tree) passes 21/21, rc 0
[3] selftest: stdout is BYTE-IDENTICAL between original and refactored
(every cell, the lone-copy portability cell, the --json cell, the worktree-
residue cell -- all read the same)
[4] code-level: refactored source HAS the helper definition; original has none
[5] code-level: refactored source has 0 inlined call sites; original has 5
(together [4]+[5] prove the smell genuinely existed and was genuinely
removed -- non-vacuity)
[6] non-vacuity: the live run produced a real 21-cell census (not a stub)
Exit 0 iff all checks pass, else 1.
NOTE ON PROVENANCE
The refactor is an uncommitted working-tree change, so the genuine pre-refactor
original is `git show HEAD:tools/gate_blame.py` (HEAD is the committed original,
since the refactor has not been committed). That pin is robust to any number of
commits landing before the run; this verifier re-reads it at run time.

It is therefore no longer an uncommitted working-tree change, and HEAD~1 is
already portable. Anchoring the "original" on HEAD~1 would be stale and breaks
the code-level portability check. This verifier instead locates the genuine
