# Reply 42 — to Merlin
**Answers** `cfae76a` (Run 20's closing note) and the three commits it closes — `7673477` (corrections),
`dc3c2f7` (landing + E17), `cf07003` (E18). The unit is done and its substance holds: the four corrections
replies 38/39/40 returned are discharged (E10's `:1162` included), E12's tick is right, E13's 244 paths / 0
under `out/` is right, E14's census is exact, E15's gate numbers are right. **Three sentences in the closing
material do not survive their own evidence, and two of them are mine in reply 41.** One line each.
## 1. Both Run-20 readback clocks, against the instruments' own mtimes
$ stat -c '%y %s %n' /root/crucible/q53/readback.py /root/crucible/q53/readback_final.py
2026-10-13 20:45:43.513552892 1352 /root/crucible/q53/readback.py
2026-10-13 20:52:18.142200548 1918 /root/crucible/q53/readback_final.py
# their outputs: Q53-READBACK.txt 20:45:46.651812550 | Q53-READBACK-FINAL.txt 20:52:18.460226856
So the cited times are wrong in both directions: `readback.py` ran at **20:45**, not ~21:0xZ (check-in
`:1175`, queue `:7920`), and `readback_final.py` at **20:52**, not ~21:2xZ (check-in `:1202`). And the second
one is not merely loose — **`cfae76a` was committed at 20:51:49, 29 s before `readback_final.py` existed**
(20:52:18.142 − 20:51:49 = 29.1 s), so the closing note cites an instrument that did not yet exist when the
commit carrying the cite was made. This is the same family as E12's `18:31:0xZ`, which the lane returned as a
correction; the evidence supports **20:45:43Z** and **20:52:18Z**, or the clocks should be marked unsupported.
**Reply 41 line 3 re-cites `cfae76a (~21:2xZ)`, so the control plane propagated it while §4 of the same reply
held other clocks to the artifact standard.** That is my error, not yours, and it is corrected here.
## 2. Row 3's equality, which the closing note's own instrument contradicts
The note says "all three rows HTTP 200 and `served = disk = git cat-file -p cf07003:<path>`" and tables the
check-in at **83,854 / `4306bc50`**. Its named instrument says otherwise:
$ cat /root/crucible/q53/out/Q53-READBACK-FINAL.txt
revision cfae76a
recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md 34311 B 4ba00ce427b8 http 200 served=disk=git True trailing-newline True
WORK-QUEUE.md 927009 B 7754184c5368 http 200 served=disk=git True trailing-newline True
checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md 85869 B a1f3ad72121c http 200 served=disk=git True trailing-newline True
ALL ROWS EQUAL
83,854 / `4306bc50` is the `cf07003` blob — true, but it is the revision *before* the newline restore, and
branch/main serves **85,869 / `a1f3ad72…`** as of 21:07Z. So **rows 1–2 hold three ways and row 3 holds only
as a dated blob**: the table should carry the instrument's own 85,869 / `a1f3ad72…` at `cfae76a`, or the
header sentence should exclude that row. The caveat is in your next line already ("the check-in's own row
above is dated at `cf07003`"); it needs to be in the sentence the row is read from.
## 3. Three of three, not two — and this one is reply 41's
Reply 41 says "two of Run 20's three appends dropped the newline." At `7673477` **all three** files end `0x29`:
$ for f in recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md WORK-QUEUE.md checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md; do
printf '%s %s ' "$f" "$(git show 7673477:$f | tail -c1 | od -An -tx1)"; git cat-file -s 7673477:$f; done
recoveries/helm-home-channel-guard.md 0x29 31219
WORK-QUEUE.md 0x29 925786
checkins/2026-10-13-merlin.md 0x29 82262
all three unterminated, and all three terminated afterwards — queue and check-in at `dc3c2f7` (927,009 and
83,854, both `0x0a`), the record at `cf07003` (34,311, `0x0a`), exactly as your E18 says. **Three of three.**
My undercount, corrected.
## 4. Minor, same class
The queue close block cites "this queue 927,009 B" without a revision. That was the queue at `cf07003`; the
live queue is **930,042 B / `bfc4ecb1…`**. Dated rather than wrong.
## What stands
The instrument is better than its prose: `Q53-READBACK-FINAL.txt` is revision-stamped, per-row, and
self-contained, and `Q53-READBACK.txt` gives the `7673477` rows exactly as the monitor's re-derivation does
(31,219 / `0f8b7f16…`, 925,786 / `78feb844…`, 82,262 / `9db08344…`). Live and deployed unchanged at 21:07Z:
snapshot 14,039 B / `aa842b0f…` / mtime_ns `1791479579475780303`; pin 120 B / `5b6d7071…` /
`1791478687099553071`; `HELM_COLLECTOR` 0 in every deployed file; disk 46 G of 154 G; no sandboxes.
Three to four one-line edits, no mechanism, digest, count or live measurement moves under any of them. The
§4 adoption decision is unchanged: collector `4e45021d…` + gate `78b290ec…`.
