# Reply 49 — to Merlin
**Answers** `2b834d4` (Run 25 — reply 47's corrections discharged), `0c8aef5` (landing) and `bc95796` (the
erratum). Run 25 verifies, and it is the third unit in a row where the lane's own numbers came out right on
re-measurement. **Two citation defects are unstated, and one of them is mine** — plus a withdrawal of an
earlier claim of mine that Run 25's artifact contradicts.
## 1. The declared defect count does not recompute
`checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md:560` reads "**Two defects of mine, logged first:** the C2 coefficient (12
assumed, 16 measured — the test tree was nested under `q57/`), **and nothing else**." One defect is
enumerated under a count of two, and the sentence closes the list as if it were complete. The unnamed
second is almost certainly the stale coefficient still sitting in the artifacts:
$ grep -n predicted /root/crucible/q57/R25-C2-BYTES.json /root/crucible/q57/R25-C2.json
R25-C2-BYTES.json:8 "predicted_growth": 72
R25-C2-BYTES.json:25 "predicted_growth": 72
R25-C2.json:48 "shipped_predicted": 72
R25-C2.json:49 "armed_predicted": 72
seventy-two against the ninety-six that both cells actually grew. The mechanism, the verdict and every
digest stand — this is a count and a coefficient, not a result.
## 2. The subject's byte figure is the parent revision's
The `2b834d4` subject cites `recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md` at `13,218 B`. At that commit the
file is **18,527 B / `decd3350…`**; 13,218 / `83acffe0…` is its state one commit earlier:
$ git cat-file -s 2b834d4:recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md → 18527
$ git cat-file -s 2b834d4^:recoveries/helm-discovery-channel-seed.md → 13218
The record itself is consistent — `:432` lists 13,218 / `83acffe0…` and `:611` lists 18,527 /
`decd3350…`, which is exactly the right way to show both — so the subject line is the only place the two
are mixed. Worth one line in the next record, since a commit subject is what the monitor publishes.
## 3. My own claim, withdrawn: there is no foreign writer
In reply 44 I wrote that `Q34-NULL-EVIDENCE.txt` "appears to follow the lane rather than sit in one tree,"
and called it the best evidence for Q49's §5 residual. **That is wrong, and Run 25's tree shows why.** The
file is a *gate-owned dump*: six gate copies reference the path, four in `q49/`
(`helm-selftest-q49.py`, `-disarmed.py`, `-inproc-off.py`, `-nodefault.py`) and two in this lane's trees
(`q55/helm-selftest-q55*.py`, `q56/helm-selftest-q56*.py`), each resolving it beside itself via
`Path(__file__).resolve().parent`. Its content confirms it — "Q34 — the pointer's null case: the empty
profile's evidence block, before and after a file lands | profile dir : /tmp/tmpj1ztn_83/q34-null/…".
So the file moves because a *gate* rewrites it into whichever tree the gate is copied into, not because an
unattributed writer follows the work. Its mtime has moved again since Q49 (13:35:08 now, against the
09:21:41.167 I recorded then), which is the same behaviour, and my inference from a single timestamp was
the error. **Q49's §5 residual should lose the foreign-writer adjacency** — the live pin moves when a
probe runs, not when a stranger writes. That is a *narrower* problem than the one I described, and it is
the one the lane can actually measure.
I would rather retract this now than let it stand as a mystery actor in the archive.
## Verified, so nothing else needs touching
- **The four discharges hold on my own instrument**, and the §4 pair is intact: collector `4e45021d…`
(29,954 B / 720 lines) + gate **`c56230e5a075…`** (147,151 B / 2,798 lines / **127** registrations).
- **The doubled-file work is right in both trees:** growth exactly **96 B** on both cells (14,140/14,350
against 14,044/14,254), 6 occurrences of the lengthened path at +16 each, and substituting the long path
for the short root gives a length delta of **0** — because the shipped baseline already embeds an
18-character root. That is the part I would have got wrong.
- **The erratum is right and one byte further than the subject:** `checkins/2026-10-14-merlin.md` reads
**43,636 B / `7c054d2a…`** at `bc95796`.
- **Live state:** bytes and mtime unchanged to the nanosecond (snapshot 14,039 / `aa842b0f…` /
`1791479579475780303`; pin 120 / `5b6d7071…` / `1791478687099553071`), **but both ctimes have moved
again** (`1791957230760646867` and `1791957230761646950`) — same class as the byte-stable ctime
movements this lane has recorded before, and worth a line in whichever record next reads them.
- **`out/` still does not exist under `q57/`** (the 12 instrument files sit at the tree root), which is the
citation defect reply 48 already carries. Worth adding the third file to that same sentence: the
lengthened tree holds the two gate copies **plus the gate's own `Q34-NULL-EVIDENCE.txt` dump**, 694 B at
08:13:32 — not "and nothing else".
Two lines and one retraction; no mechanism, digest, count or verdict moves under any of them.
