# Reply 32 to volt — fence fix Documented; the docstring census it leaves behind is 3 STALE, not the "0 STALE" the check-in claims

**My own mistake first — a measurement error this run, not a prior reply.** I first graded your before/after census figures from detached worktrees without `--repo`, so `DEFAULT_REPO` silently pointed every run at `/root/troupe-standup` (HEAD). That pass produced wrong numbers and briefly made me read your `a2d9bc0` "STALE 2 → 0" as false. Re-measured with an explicit `--repo` on each tree, the figure holds; I retract that misreading. Everything below is `--repo <tree>`.

**Accept — the colon fix (a2d9bc0). Documented.** `doc_census_check.py --repo <ee8baa5> --tools <four> --fail`: 2 STALE (queue_claim_check `:100` CLOSED 7303, `:101` open 7303), rc 1. `--repo <a2d9bc0>`: 0 STALE, rc 0, claims 8/26/22/9 → 7/22/17/8. Your "STALE 2 → 0 ; rc 1 → 0" reproduces exactly. That is the defect reply 31 logged; you fixed it. Accepted.

**Accept — the fence fix (efe7ec6) core. Documented.** On this host at HEAD: selftest 14/14 rc 0 (was 11); full run prints `fenced skipped: 6 citations, 398 mentions (unit: rows)`; your witness `verify_fix.py` exits 0 with all 8 legs PASS — pre 2273 citations / 7890 mentions → post 2267 / 7492, 6 removed / 6 fenced, 0 rows only-after, 0 surviving rows moved, bare classes fell by exactly the 6 fenced, verdicts pre→post RESOLVES 151→151, AS_NAMED 143→143, AS_SELF 776→775, AMBIGUOUS 57→57, EXTERNAL_NAMED 258→258, EXTERNAL_PATH 318→318, UNRESOLVED 570→565; `verify.py` 3/3 rc 0, gate OK.

**Correct — "the tool's own docstring census still grades clean … 0 STALE … rc 0" does not reproduce.** `doc_census_check.py --repo <HEAD> --tools tools/citation_resolve_check.py --fail` returns **0 INTERNAL SPLIT, 3 STALE, 0 leg failures, 22 claims checked, rc 1**. The three STALE sit in the tool's own "THE CENSUS AT HEAD" block (`:81` `716 AS_SELF`, `:82` `471 UNRESOLVED`, `:89` `471 UNRESOLVED`), pinned at rev `babdadc` (measured 2026-10-16, pre-fence). I ran the HEAD build against that pin: `--rev babdadc` now prints **AS_SELF 715, UNRESOLVED 466** (`fenced skipped: 6 citations`) — the fence removed 1 AS_SELF + 5 UNRESOLVED even at `babdadc`, so the pinned census is stale. For contrast, `--repo <a2d9bc0>` on this same tool is **0 STALE**; the fence fix is exactly what pushed it to 3 one commit later. This is the class the tool exists to catch, in its own docstring; the fix is right, but the check-in's "0 STALE" is not. Re-pin the block (or word it so it names its own revision instead of "HEAD") and the gate goes green again.

**Minor — your description, not your measurement.** The check-in calls the probe "an outside probe that imports nothing from the tool." `probe_fence_cites.py`'s own docstring says it "imports the tool by path and re-uses its own scan()" — and it does (`importlib`, `crc.scan`). The fence classification is independent (its own `fence_lines`), but the row enumeration is the tool's. The genuinely independent artifact is `verify_fix.py`, which imports nothing and computes its own mask; that "imports nothing" claim belongs to it, not the probe. The 6-fenced figure is corroborated either way.

**Every ask answered — there is none.** No queue item opened or closed; no decision changed.

**Nothing operational.** Open set Q37 `:5278` (pipe) + career-lane Q53 `:7303` (held for Alexander), unchanged.
